Really loved the goty discussion. I think the jury system is way better than other shows and it is fun to celebrate every year. At the same time, I wish more games could get representation. 1000xRESIST, Fear the Spotlight, Nine Sols, The Rise of the Golden Idol, and more could all find new audiences with the right categories. Even Paper Mario, Dragon Quest, Persona 3 Reload, Romancing SaGa 2, Visions of Mana, Ys X, all in the best year of RPGs ever. Helldivers 2, Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth, Neva, Silent Hill 2, Tekken 8, and UFO 50 all missing a a goty spot in favor of a DLC just doesn't feel right.
I wished Damiani could have made a more coherent argument against Erdtree. Because it’s not a new game, it’s not a stand alone release. You cannot just buy Erdtree and play it, you have to purchase a whole other game and get ass deep into it, behind secret optional areas and bosses in order to access it, that does NOT apply to miles morales or mass effect 2 that you can just play and buy by themselves. I love Erdtree, it’s great, it is not a game, its additional content to an already released award winning game
I would counter that arguement by saying that its a much more substantial and meaningful experience than the average DLC. I feel like if it won an award for best DLC it would actually be underselling just how good it is.
@@BasketCase-rr7tx you can think the calling it a DLC is under selling it, but it still literally is a DLC. It’s not a standalone and can’t be engaged with as a standalone, it is required to play another game, and a lot of that game at that before you can access it. Erdtree was one of my favorite things I played this year, but I just can’t call it a full game when it’s literally not a full game. If any of the other nominees for game of the year required you to buy another full price game, play a lot of it, and then beat optional and secret areas before you could access the actual nominee, we would all call that crazy and dumb.
@@danielcanavan-gosling5118 Yeah I know but nominating it against a bunch of things that aren’t anywhere near the same quality would just feel like a bit of a mockery of the whole thing IMO.
Balatro doesn't meet the game award's own description for game of the year "Recognizing a game that delivers the absolute best experience across all creative and technical fields"
Erdtree was absolutely amazing, but it should NOT be a goty nominee. You need to own elden ring, reach the endgame, defeat one of the tougher bosses in the base game, and then you can access the DLC.
Exactly. And the sad part is its probably going to win... Truth be told, I haven't really taken the game awards that seriously since Sonic Frontiers and Metal Hellsinger weren't even NOMINATED for the best music category. It's really just a popularity contest for every category it seems like.
I think the winner is decided by voting, so the things you mentioned should work against the odds of erdtree winning (because of those things mentioned a lot of people have not experienced it, hence won't vote). I don't think those are reasons to exclude it from winning. It was the best video game thing I played this year and goty of mine.
100% true. But the issue is bigger, media should have a 10% say to GOTY for example and 90% should be from all of us. Now its the opposite and its sily.Even all the population vote for something , we cant win.
If Erdtree being nominated was this controversial clearly people don’t like it being nominated for GOTY as dlc. Nominate it in a best expansion/dlc category and call it a day.
Whatever comes of this year, I genuinely do just hope that this does inspire them to just do a DLC/Expansion award some day. Solely to highlight these kinds of experiences. Was Lake House the best dlc ever? No, but I think it would be nice to even just highlight the work that went into it and other DLCs. And yeah I do think it’s fair to have a difference between ongoing game expansions and DLC.
College Football probably didn't make the cut in Best Sports because Football is a thing only in the US so none of the foreing publications that are part of the Jury didn't even know it was a thing. I'm not even sure it was released over here tbh.
Isla, Action games can be simplified to 'all action all the time'. Action-Adventures are a healthy mix of action/combat and exploration/puzzles. If we go back to the NES, Contra is the former and Metroid is the latter. Where the current contentions lines are blurring these days is between Action-Adventures and RPGs. Those genres are constantly adopting each other's attributes and structure.
For the GotY discussion, I think Huber nailed it. The word he used, "messy". Perfect word for how this was put together and handled. That being said, I don't have a horse in the race. I only look at TGA for the trailers. I'm gonna go hide in the corner now lol
Blood bringing up Miles Morales and Lost Legacy is not a good counter at all. Two games that don’t require the installation of other games and exist on their own. They’re not dlc. Shadows of the Erdtree requires you to play Elden Ring. (Usually with an endgame character) saying mass effect 2 as a counter also was silly. You can play Mass Effect 2 without importing a character. Most of my friends started Mass Effect with 2. He’s bringing up all these hypotheticals when the reality is…you NEED elden ring to play the dlc and you have to damn near beat the game. Shadows doesnt exist on its own as a game. Shouldn’t have been nominated.
Yeah my personal example of a game just not being popular and screwed by it’s release date is the lack of RPG nomination for 40K Rogue Trader. Definitely the year of the JRPG specifically, not many of my preferred western options this year sadly.
Every piece of playable content is a game. The point of specific categories in any award show are to give more exposure to games that can't compete with the very best for the big prize. Erdtree can and does compete for the big prize through it's quality. It's that good that it doesn't matter the content is locked behind another game. It's nominated despite that fact.
Why is addictiveness considered a positive thing anyway? Just because I can't stop playing, let's say, Balatro, doesn't mean it's a game worth playing. Many live-service games, for example, try to get you addicted to them. For me, in the end, it's about whether there's something meaningful in it, or if it's just a hamster wheel.
I love the shit out of Cyberpunk's Phantom Liberty, and even if it was nominated for the GOTY, I would still disagree with it, same as Erdtree. An Expansion to an already existing game should not take the spot of an actual new game for GOTY, no matter how good it is. I don't care if Blood and Wine won it before, that also shouldn't have been nominated. Put them in the "Best Expansion" category like Golden Joystick just did and that would have been more reasonable. I have no issue with Erdtree taking home that award because it deserves it for being as great as it is.
I don't understand. This shouldn't be "messy." If it's a game, it can be in the game of a year or any singe game release category. If it's an add-on, expansion, dlc of an existing game, then it can't be in a single game release category and make an additional category. If it's a game designed purposefully to keep going, like Fortnite, it also shouldn't be in the single game release categories and be in its own ongoing category. This isn't rocket science...
Erdtree is not a game, it's an expansion to an existing game. It shouldn't be nominated for anything, outside of a "best DLC" / "Best expansion" / "best on going game" type award It's a large expansion, it's a very good expansion - but it's not a game. It can't win game of the year any more than Gladiator 2 can. It's also not a game. People saying it's good enough to win goty, if it was a stand alone game are absolutely crazy. It's not a full games content, it's a fairly sparsely populated map, with some great bosses. Just...no. It won't win, so it's fine - but it did stop an actual game getting nominated.
"A video game,[a] also known as a computer game or just a game, is an electronic game that involves interaction with a user interface or input device (such as a joystick, controller, keyboard, or motion sensing device) to generate visual feedback from a display device, most commonly shown in a video format on a television set, computer monitor, flat-panel display or touchscreen on handheld devices, or a virtual reality headset." I see a lot of people against the Kadokawa acquisition, but i have been on Crunchyroll for over a decade and its gotten significantly better, it feels like Damiani watches it illegally if he thinks that. This is a huge win for me, i want more content on one platform, using multiple platforms has not been beneficial for me cause we have no options in the west, multi streaming platforms just drastically increases costs for me. I haven't heard a valid argument against it other than potential layoffs which don't affect me as a consumer, and the censorship conspiracy, which im not against. Loli and gooner content in anime doesn't need to stick around anymore, it doesn't make anything better but attract weirdos. Having a best DLC category is pointless because most DLC's dont deserve to be nominated for awards. Erdtree stands above the average DLC and to be perfectly honest most DLC dont even deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence as it, which is exactly why it deserves to be nominated for GOTY.
Blood and Wine is not an identical situation, since it's available standalone. You don't need to have bought/played Witcher 3 to buy/play Blood & Wine. Otherwise I agree it's a very similar situation.
