    I met Fangio at the 1976 Grand Prix of Long Beach. He drove demonstration of the Mercedes W196 Grand Prix car and after watching from general seating, I made my way back across the skybridge to find a location to watch the upcoming F1 race. There he was....standing by himself hands-on hips and perfectly still just gazing out looking at the track (must have been remembering many things), with crowds of people swirling around walking past (no one recognized him!). He was very nice, signed my race program, we talked a bit and shook hands. Most striking feature of the Maestro were his super intense eyes...like an eagles gaze is the best way I can describe it. I'm sure if in Europe he would have been mobbed by autograph requests.

    • @fzanka
      @fzanka 6 ปีที่แล้ว +60

      Yes, still have it. On programs a story to share, I lived in W.Germany in my late teens thru early 20's ('73-'75) and wanted to race Formula cars and started in a sponsored F-Ford (an Alexis Mk2). I went to many F1/F3/F3, Interseries, GT races (Nurburgring, Hockenheim, Zandvoort, Monaco, etc.) and so collected a lot of posters/programs of that era. Eventually, I ran out of living money and had to stop F-Ford. Eventually, I ended up doing slaloms and rallye's driving a modified Porsche 356B S-90 and again ran out of money. When I sold the Porsche, the Alexis F-Ford owner gave me a gift before I returned to the states...the gift was the original race program and race day ticket in perfect condition to the Hockenheim F2 race that Jim Clark drove in and died. I kept it all these years until reading an article about Dario Franchitti maintaining a Jim Clark museum/memorial in his London estate in July 2013. So, I had an idea...I contacted his Management Co. in the UK and pitched the Jim Clark program/ticket. Dario wanted it...and asked how much? My reply was no money....but how about a visit to his J.Clark memorial room and couple fast laps around his estate (in one of his favorite super cars) on my next visit to the UK?...Management company said "sorry but no way because of insurance liability exposures"... but... "he would like to meet you if/when your in a city he races in"...so I gave it away to Dario for a very low 3 figure sum. In November 2013, Dario had that crash in Phoenix that ended his career any my chances of our ever meeting. But, better the Clark relic living in Dario's collection than in my file drawer.
      p.s. Had one fine day after winning a slalom at the Porsche test track at Weissach in which the prize was 8 laps (as a passenger) in a 917k modified with an extra seat. It was driven by Jurgen Barth Jr. Jurgen stomped on it and we flew around the test track - those few minutes were the highlight of my 3 years trying to fulfill a dream. That dream began reading a short story about J. Fangio when I was 11 years old. You can imagine what was going through my head when I spotted Fangio at Long Beach...

      Dude I'm 150% totally jealous! Fangio is my all-time racing hero! I talked about him to every speed freak and race enthusiasts I meet. His style of driving, his technique, his fearlessness for speeds unheard of even for people today in the types of cars that he drove is just absolutely amazing. To see him drive a w196 around the Long Beach course must have been an absolute treat. I get goosebumps just imagining it. To see him drift the corners and rev that incredible straight 8 must have been eargasmic. What was it like to witness the maestro driving that incredible piece of machine?

    • @fzanka
      @fzanka 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Eric YEH Eric, I have the same regard of Fangio as you do. This guy was a boyhood hero. He drive the Mercedes factory 196 with old style googles and leather helmut...probably his "kit" from the old days. While he didnt drift the car, he went through a rapid and precise gear change (downshift and upshift) each time around. He was on power early....but carefully in turns. I was at the end of the straight on Shoreline Drive followed by a hairpin right...so he surely must have dancing on the pedals. Thanks for your comment.

    Best F1race of history. Nürburgring 1957. Aware that the Pirelli tires would not resist the entire race and that pit stop would have to be completed after half a race, Fangio decided to go out on the track with half tank of gas, to get away soon after the start and get a good advantage before stopping, replacing tires and refilling the tank in half. This should allow him to be ahead enough of the Ferrari to remain a leader after the stop. Of course in Formula 1 nothing is what is expected. After the departure, Juan Manuel Fangio escaped and after thirteen laps, had a thirty second advantage over Mike Hawthorn and Peter Collins. That's where Formula 1 showed, once again, that things are not always going as expected, and the stop of Juan Manuel Fangio was a disaster. The team of mechanics had problems removing one of the used wheels and the argentine came out fifty seconds behind of the Ferrari, with ten returns for the end.
    In the first round, Fangio recovered the leader of the race sixteen seconds, and nine seconds in the second. In addition, he BROKE THE TRACK RECORD NINE TIMES in those ten laps, seven of them, followed. During the penultimate lap, the Maserati star driver overtook the two Ferrari, and continued to do his best until the end, taking the victory by a mere three and a half seconds, having made a spectacular comeback.

      Cuando era pequeño en mi ciudad Barcelona inauguraron un centro comercial de una marca muy conocida aquí. Hicieron una exposición de formula 1 brutal y tuve la gran suerte de que el de seguridad era íntimo de mi padre. Y claro en el cierre no había nadie controlando y pude echarme un vistazo y montarme en ellos sin armar mucho ruido. Habían coches como el ferrari de Gilles, el Tyrrell de Jackie entre otros... Y al final de todo había el mitico maserati de Fangio. Me dejo alucinado la cantidad de tubos que tenía en el cockpit y lo inseguro que era eso mira que los otros tampoco es que fueran "seguros" pero lo de Fangio enfín una barbaridad pensar a la velocidad que se ponía con esa tumba con ruedas.

    I once read that Juan Fangio was at one time a cab driver in Buenos Aires. I don't know if that is true or not but it adds a little spark to his already great legacy.
    I remember reading about Mr. Fangio and Stirling Moss when they were still competing. Back then, when those races were current, those two were regarded as the two greatest. The time since has only added to their greatness.
    RIP Mssrs

La vida me llevó a conocer a las sobrinas de Fangio y me enseñaron trofeos que pude ver y tocar que no están en su museo de Balcace... que visité haciendo 800 km en 2 días para verlo.

    To all the monumental feats and records and deeds that Fangio has achieved, there is just one more fact I would like to add to the legend he is. Commonly the great Senna is considered the best wet driver ever, but some statistical and mathematical studies (hence totally objective and unbiased), based on benchmark of the performances of drivers on the wet with those of teammates in equal machinery, state that Fangio was actually by far the greatest wet driver in F1 history. Second comes Senna with Schumacher close third. Too bad we have no footage to admire the skills of El Maestro on the wet.
