Walt, I've done this twice (17 & 10) but building purpose built L/C match's. I looked back through my notes and pictures. The raw feedpoint impedance on both is circa R 80, X - 380. Big reactive element.
Brilliant Walt as always, great antenna, great results! I enjoy the 10 meter band myself! Thanks again for the video, Oh and the food is always something I look forward too now Hi Hi
Very good Walt ! I have been doing that 5/8 wave lately. I went at it a different way. I started out with the 25 ft and used a nano VNA H4 for a swr sweep and smith chart. I kept shorting to I got the dip where I wanted. I ended up with a SWR of 1.1 on 28.074 MHZ . with good band with and Z very close to 50 ohms. I just went on the air with a QT 60 and made a ton of contacts . SSB and FT8 . all on battery . I made it a bit longer it tuned CB like 1.3 swr the dip was just out side the CB band so I left it. Lots OF DX . Jamecia ,ETC. Them made it a tad longer on tuned 12 meter like 1.4 SWR and left it. Worked many DX . I just left my wire long. I have a carabiner at end I clip to pole . I fold back extra wire and twist it around a bunch of times. I get 3 bands about 5/8 wave on 1 wire and that walmart speaker wire . I have a bunch of 17 FT ground radials like 16 on the ground spread out. For 20 meters 5/8 wave is appx 43 FT into a 4:1 . I did that. had to slope from short 10 meter pole. I got 1.7 SWR and just hit tune on my IC 7300 and did a POTA. over 100 contacts SSB and like 30 FT8 from all over. Quite the RX antenna . the 10/11/12 5/8 is the best RX antenna so far. I have done 15 and 17 meters as well. I cut a tad long and shorten to tune. Just like a end fed half wave . tune for the dip in the band you want. 4:1 UNUN is more efficient that the 49/56/64:1 UNUN. That where the boost in RX comes from. I went for best match of 50 ohms instead of exact length of 5/8 . worked great . VNA does a wide sweep so you can see that SWR dip better. Just a outher way to do 5/8 wave tune. What I did and worked for me over dirt . 73
Thank you Walt, for another great video. I've wanted to try a 5?8 wave antenna. I'll throw one together later today. !0-meters has been up and down but when it's up, it's great! Aloha Walt, I took my son to the HNL airport the other day and taking my wife to that same airport tomorrow, that will give me a week to play radio or to learn to use some new radios. In fact, HRO and DX Engineering had a great sale of a $100 off of the new Yaesu FTM-200DR with C4FM and the Air band with 2m and 70cm. I’m just waiting for the mailman to deliver it today without the next hour or so. I can’t wait to open that box and check it out. There is a few C4FM repeaters in the area that I want to try this new rig on and see if I get some good signal reports. I will be on 10 meters on Friday at 28.310 mhz where the locals hangout before jumping up to 28.420 mhz, that seems to get a lot of traffic after 11am HST. Great video again and it looks like I need to order some more 18ga AWG speaker wire to use with my Cobra Head connectors. 👍
Walt: My calculations for a 10 meter 5/8-wave antenna give me a length of 21' 6". That's using the formula L = 610/F(MHZ), originally found in the Editors & Engineers Radio Handbook back in 1966. The formula is based on 984*(n-0.05). With "n" being 0.625, this comes out to L = (984*0.62)/F(MHz) for a length of 21 .481 feet. Round it to 21 1/2 feet. In practice, 21 feet (+/-) is going to put one in the ballpark, myself, my Go-To portable antenna is 29 feet with a 13 foot counterpoise. I call it a 15 meter 5/8 vertical, and with no ocean near, it works fine on glacially-formed hills in western NY and PA. Keep up the good work and CU from the next park! 73, Keith, WB2VUO in Amherst, NY
Interesting, I took the lazy way out and used my antenna tool app which gave me the 20.6" number. I really need to go back and see why the app generated that number, maybe they have some factor in there. After reading this comment I inputted the frequency and surrounding frequencies several times and still got the length. Thanks for the comment, I need to see what the heck the Antenna Tool App is doing. 73, Walt

Hey Walt, great video! My dad and I have been using home-made ten meter j-poles here lately on 10, having great luck with them! They’re built from ladder line and small gauge wire, so maybe it would be a fun project for the future.
Not having grown up close to any seafood places I don't know what those stuffys were but that looked like a great combo of a meal. Looked like the 5/8 did well.
There are ways to calculate ( maybe estimate is a better word) the impedance on an antenna as you move away from the center on a halfwave wire. You divide the impedance at that point by the cosine squared of the number of electrical degrees you are from that point. For example if the center point impedance on a dipole was 75 ohms, moving off center 45 degrees (1/8 wave) you would see an impedance of 150 ohms. I am wondering what SWR you measured on your coax using the 4:1 transformer. The counterpoise does add a bit of complexity or uncertainty to my simplified formula above but I would expect it would still be close. Food looked great!
Hey Salty Walt, I love seeing your homebrew antennas, thanks for sharing! I design and share a lot of homebrew portable quarterwave and halfwave antenna plans, too. I'm curious ... why did you NOT use an RF choke at the LDG 4:1 UNUN? Doesn't that make the coax shield part of the antenna system (not ideal for preventing CMC or RFI)? Also, how long of a counterpoise do you think is necessary? I know you had it run into the water, but what if it is deployed on dry ground? Keep up the great work my friend 😀73 KJ6ER
