CNC Mill Retrofit- Spindle Motor Adapter

  • This week I continue tinkering on our Centroid Acorn CNC mill retrofit by mounting the DMM 750 watt AC servo motor. This part of the project required modifying the existing step pulley bushing to fit the 86M-DHT 0.75kW AC Servo Motor 14mm shaft. A temporary adapter plate was also designed and 3D printed to enable the motor to attach to the top of the DynaMyte 2800 milling machine. Ran into a few roadblocks along the way but ultimately succeeded.

    Great video. Clear, concise and trimmed down (or sped up) in all the right places.
    If you have to deal with the tailstock issue again, add a second setscrew behind the first on to lock it in place.

    One other thing. You might have considered ordering the 750w DMM Motor with NEMA 34 frame. It comes with a .5" shaft

      Yeah.. I realized that was available after the fact. I had actually ordered the motor and had it for about a month before I ever took this apart. It was a bit of an oversight.

    that set screw might have been pushing a piece of brass or cast iron against the groove?

      It may very well have. That would have given it more positive engagement, no chance of galling, and the screw wouldn’t have had to go in so far. But, that being said, it was threaded deep enough to do the job so I really don’t know. A parts diagram would probably clear it up pretty quickly but I haven’t looked for one. Thanks for watching !

    A drop or two of blue locktite on that set screw might've been in order to prevent the issue with that tailstock creeping back to bite you in another couple of years.

      You're no doubt right. And by then I'll have probably forgotten what the issue is and how to fix it.

    You may need another setscrew to lock the first one and keep it in place on your tailstock...so it doesn't back out.

    Your content is great, much appreciated. Did you put an encoder on the spindle itself? I know the servo gives a lot of data to you on its spindle, but wondering how to deal with a belt slipping if you don't have an encoder on the spindle. I am new to all this, please forgive me.

      Thanks! at this point there is no spindle encoder. I did hook up the spindle drive encoder output to the encoder input on the Acorn board but that really doesn't give you any useful feedback and can't be used for threading. A future phase of this project will be swapping out the step pulleys for timing belt pulleys. The tentative plan is to go from the current 3 speed ranges to just 2 and use the extra space to add a spindle encoder- that is at least the working idea at the moment. Thanks for watching!

    How is this servo working out does it have enought torch?

      it has been working great. I did end up replacing the original 750 watt motor with the 1kw version, and it is important to keep in mind that this is a relatively small mill to begin with, but this motor has at least as much power as the original in my opinion.
