  • Bill Hader (SNL & Barry) interview on: anxiety, imposter syndrome, panic attacks & how they impact his work on tv. Plus, an imitation of Joseph Goldstein. In this podcast episode we talk about:
    - How Bill deals with anxiety
    - His panic attack on live television
    - His love of directing and the importance of having the right collaborators
Bill Hader has made the transition from being a master of stand-out characters and impressions on eight seasons of Saturday Night Life to becoming a true multi-hyphenate by creating, directing, writing, producing and starring as a burned-out assassin trying to break into Hollywood as an actor in HBO’s award-winning and critically lauded dark comedy, Barry.

ABOUT THE TEN PERCENT HAPPIER PODCAST
Dan Harris is a fidgety, skeptical journalist who had a panic attack on live national television, which led him to try something he otherwise never would have considered: meditation. He went on to write the bestselling book, 10% Happier. On this show, Dan talks with eminent meditation teachers, top scientists, and even the odd celebrity. Guests include everyone from His Holiness the Dalai Lama to Brené Brown to Karamo from Queer Eye. On some episodes, Dan ventures into the deep end of the pool, covering subjects such as enlightenment and psychedelics. On other episodes, it’s science-based techniques for issues such as anxiety, productivity, and relationships. Dan's approach is seemingly modest, but secretly radical: happiness is a skill you can train, just like working your bicep in the gym. Your progress may be incremental at first, but like any good investment, it compounds over time.

Man, it's like there are totally layers to anxiety, to the ways in which every thing in our lives can contribute or counter the other measures we take to combat the anxiety- when my life is very up-in-the-air and uncertain, its harder to even calm down enough to DO anything to combat the stress - a total irony! It's like "I'm too stressed and jumbled up to actually commit to meditating right now." It's hard to sometimes take action to soothe the one thing, while external factors contribute TO the anxiety. It's like putting on bandaids as someone is repeatedly stabbing you...

Bill saying "stop building negative narratives because then when it happens you just have to go through the thing twice" is so wise I always think it makes me more prepared but he's right! I'm just sad twice!

I struggle with this daily. This is the second time I've seen it put so clearly..Don't suffer twice.
Being happy and upbeat aren't the norm for me and that's messed up. I try to remember all of the positive lessons, from so many people, and make my days better.

Microdosing was my next plan of care for my husband. He is 59 & has so many mental health issues plus probable CTE & a TBI that left him in a coma 8 days. It's too late now I had to get a TPO as he's 6'6 300+ pound homicidal maniac.
He's constantly talking about killing someone.
He's violent. Anyone reading this Familiar w/ BPD know if it is common for an obsession with violence.

19:58 Love that Bill points out how simply “adding in” positive activities like meditation is null if you’re continuing negative behavior like consuming 8-9 cups of coffee a day, especially as someone living with an anxiety disorder. This may be obvious, but it stood out to me. Thanks for a fascinating interview!

This made my year. I relate to this so much and it really helped me to hear Bill be so open and vulnerable about anxiety. Lord knows, it’s trying to keep all that anxiety locked up inside, that’s what really drives the hyper vigilant monkey into full on jailbreak mode. Been there since my first panic attack at 9 and didn’t know what was going on until I was in my late 30’s. Thanks for getting the word out…helps a lot of us nervous, overthinking types. “The hippies were right”. 😂❤❤❤

What a great conversation! My parents and I were all big Bill Hader fans from his days on SNL. I started watching Barry with both of my parents, and by the time the finale aired I had lost them both. My mental health journey has been absolutely all over the place (still is) but it's so validating to hear Bill saying these things that resonate so deeply with me, and to have his art to get lost in as well is the cherry on top.
Also I loved seeing him in Beau is Afraid. Can't wait for him to direct his first feature!

Bill's point at 1:03:10 is really spot on. Even in family relationships for me recently, being able to admit and acknowledge my reaction, why I reacted even though its wrong, and what I'm truly trying to communicate really helps strengthen relationships and bonds. I've always been one to associate confrontation with negativity, and I think this new mindset is a lot healthier.

This is right on time for me. I recently started recognizing when my actions become influenced by anxiety, and just saying it was anxiety has been helpful. Somehow that just happened organically, but this talk reinforces it, and reminds me I'm not alone.

Oh man I relate to Bill's thing where he says he interacts with someone and sees they seem stressed or upset, internalizing that like "oh, I did that, I should fix that" - and then the person not responding right away via text or whatever - the feeling "I blew it, they hate me now"... man that's hard.

Listening to this was extremely validating and comforting. I just wanted to share, and this is something I'm sure Bill Hader may have already considered for what it's worth, but I used to drink energy drinks every day at work which amplified my anxiety but helped me focus. Then I was diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder (with general anxiety and panic disorder which often go together). I like to push myself professionally and personally and found lifestyle changes (like ones you discussed) plus medication for my ADD helped a great deal. No more energy drinks needed and with the right medication I am functioning with noticeably less anxiety. Probably because I am able to rein in all the thoughts and focus on priorities, be better prepared and think on my feet. Thanks very much for sharing your experiences; I really empathize and it takes a lot of guts to keep putting yourselves out there given the internal battles you face. Take care.

Watching Bill on other interviews his ability to reflect and dive down beyond the humor has always connected with me.
Hearing this interview I understand why. In ways we’ve walked a similar path. I either feel like in a conversation I’d have things to share that I’ve noticed as an idea for him or what he observed could be something to provide me with insight.
It just shows, we are all on this rock spinning around and while we think we are unique or alone at times we are really all alike and not far from connection.
    Great interview!

First time watching this podcast, so funny story: When Bill was talking about the live Assange panic attack, it reminded me of that news anchor having one on air. I was about to Google it, then the view switched back to Dan and I was like that Leo DiCaprio reaction meme realizing WAIT THAT'S THE GUY! 😂 Then obviously confirmed where shortly after he addresses it.

People always say that you don’t feel meds immediately and if you do it’s a placebo effect, but that’s not true. If you’re in a really bad way and at the end of the rope, you’re going to feel that first dose or two. It’s a literal shock to your system. Nowhere near the final effect of what that med will do for you but the med absolutely is effecting you and it’s not in your mind.

Exercise for me has been the thing that has an incredible impact on anxiety (which requires good sleep too I feel). I will go from a ball of nerves to a cool head over the course of a workout, or just a fast 20-30min run.
I believe Bill mentioned before he has ADHD, as do I. I think exercise is crucial for those who struggle with that.

We get so comfortable with "being" the same way we've always been, no matter how awful that is.
Being anxious can become addictive itself in that if it's removed from me, I no longer know who I am or how to behave in specific moments.
It's a tough gig, but the best work I've ever done, and continue to do.
A teacher of Buddhism has said that her teacher referred to mindfulness as not forgetting what your doing, moment to moment. It isn't virtuous, it's a tool.
