After having 2 emissions trucks now I’d rather have the fake stacks. They stay cleaner and also after you have it deleted you can pull all the other crap off and hook up your straight pipes lol.
Thks for explaining the exhaust setups, new setup with vertical stacks. Safety you get heavy snow in a truck stop then you got to worry about exhaust fumes
Visually, stacks are the way to go on these Longnose Tractors. Pratical aspects of a weedburner, yeah you can take alot lower underpasses opening up for more routes = more work = more profits. Im kinda torn in between the two. But honestly, Fake pipes is like adding a 7 inch rear muffler on a Corolla lol
One thing you guys forgot.. Either way you install the exhaust on the emissions trucks the sound won’t change... they’re very quiet no matter what.. so having them run threw the top really makes no difference. Also on my 2019 389 when I would get washes and start her up it would spit out white Almost like chalk all over my stacks and the front of the van I was pulling at the time. I’m building a 2022 now and it will have dummy stacks and def tank will be hidden under the hood 😎
Well fellers, I do like the old school look as does bring back memories! With that said , if I’m haven’ dual exhaust, I’d want them working, even tho it does take away the small box on the passenger side, at least it’s on the grassy side, where most of the time you’d probably be in the slow lane anyway. Yah technology RIGHT! Just like the new dash coming in a few months ! Yah times a changin’ for sure! GREAT VIDEO, Keep Em Comin!
Looking good I like old school hands down and make them active I'd bare the expense if it was mine and the canvas for black widow is looking sharp can't wait to see that build
Old School Look ! With some mods. [1] Turn the fuel tanks around so the filler cap is in front of the sleeper. [2] Run the 2 stacks up the back of the sleeper off the grass burner, a lot more quite for the driver.
As a tech who has done both, I highly recommend conecting the dummys. It makes them super sturdy. Then toss the dynaflex bushing in the trash and use a bushing with a steel sleeve! Just some advise!
I am strange but I love stackless 389s. There is just something about a hood with filler panels where the stacks go and also makes sense with the horizontal exhaust and no dummy stacks to mess with.
That’s a great option in comparison to ordering the vertical exhaust. The after treatment is required now so it’s time to adjust to it, I’d rather have the old school look and dummy pipes then have the weird looking useless box on the passenger side. Nothing comes out of the pipes now anyway so there’s no reason to waste the energy making the stacks active on the horizontal exhaust, might as well leave them as is with the dummy pipes. Great video guys!!
the trucks with the horizontal exhaust gonna look funny when the wisconsin cold makes the steam vapor come out underneath instead of the expensive fake stacks lotta show and no go, like the alum fifth wheel way over priced for saving 50 lbs .i would get the 605 hp if u wanna show something
You guys rock. Loved the explanation on active vs inactive exhaust. I"m not a trucker just a lover of trucks and one who has made many cross country trips by car/van. But I'm guessing that there are reasons to having one or the other exhaust system based on the type of work the truck will be doing. Keep up the great work; love watching your presentation of these beautiful workhorses.
i would rather have working exhaust . i love that hum coming down the road .would the tractor get better fuel mileage with dual stacks sweet looking truck
just turn a Y around and a little flex and a strait piece of pipe , all stainless of course . oh and slide to weed burner down a little to be completely behind the fuel tank . is the silver one his also ? thanks again for the shows
I definitely prefer the vertical functional exhaust for the look and to be able to have the exhaust come out the stacks, also so it's not as much of a fire hazard having the exhaust all under the sleeper. Then I also ran a truck with the grass burner exhaust under the sleeper for a few weeks, while my 379 that I had was in the shop for a engine overhaul and I noticed sometimes you could smell exhaust fumes in while laying in bed in the sleeper. But it's still definitely hard to beat a pre emission truck with stacks, then you get the look and the sound.
I’m a farmer, bot a trucker, but I’m still a sucker for a good looking rig. If I ever bought an emissions truck, I wouldn’t be worried about that SCR/DEF deal, because it would disappear the second I got off the lot...
Dynaflex makes a working stack kit, which provides brackets that move the EGR battery box a few inches forward to make clearance for a 7” working stack.
Weed burner in cold weather, makes it really hard to see behind you because all the cold exhaust covers everything as opposed to vertical exhaust where it’s all up high, allowing you to see behind you. But, dummy exhaust doesn’t get heat and burn all the bugs to the pipes. Functional vertical exhaust is always getting stained from water getting in the stacks and being pushed out while the engine is running. And the weed burner is really really hot behind the truck.
I know this is an oldie…. Is there any change in the sound of the exhaust or the performance at all when you straight pipe a truck that is NOT deleted?
That big black and red truck behind you guys would look fantastic with thin gold leaf outlining the red. Straight old school. What you guys were talking about with looping it back - look at a 9200 to 9900 international with dual cab mounted exhaust. It'd be almost the same set up you're talking about.
They don't make trucks like they use to. Can you put the big box that covers the Def system on the driver side or is it too long? I kinda like the way they look. I still love the old school steps.
I think if you have a deck plate and move the DEF back a bit it will be easier to Y pipe it after a U turn. Cause you can got over/under the pipe leading to the DEF easier. The it still looks clean and had active stacks.
\Can you position and extend the weed burner exhaust pipe so that the tip extends past the fuel tank and blows out to the side between the tank and the first set of duals. This should eliminate the dust being blown up as the exhaust is vented out to the side. It may also reduce the noise in the cab as the exhaust is not being bounced of the ground. Thanks. Great video!!
Just extend the scr can closer to the middle of the truck that way you have best of both worlds stacks and tool box what I did over here on are wrecker also made the scr exit bigger makes quite a nice note 7 inch stacks too
Hey this is the reason I searched out this video. You're saying it's possible to move the dpf canister over to make room for larger stacks and also a tool box on the passenger side? And you're saying you can improve the sound of the exhaust by widening the scr outlet?
Have you had any luck on the active stack systems removing the tops after using the silicone ? I did it on my 389 and wanted to change my tops their only a year old and they won’t budge any ideas?
I have a question. On a 2012 KW. It has duel exhaust stacks. One is a dummy the other works. Will it hurt anything if I was to hook the other one up to where it exhaust also? It has the regine system.
Dummy stacks do keep them cleaner. The def leaves black and purple streaks all over and it’s a pain to get off. Plus I like the old style step without emissions system in pass. step
I have been hunting for a true exhaust to connect to weed burner because I love the old school look. But there is no kit in existence. Dynaflex needs to get on that.
To each his own I guess. Think I'd just build a new glider with a pre emissions driveline and real stacks. If it don't sing out the top it just ain't right.
@@jeffbronowicz3264 well that blows. I got out after 27 years just as all this emissions stuff got started. I was thumbing thru the truck paper today, hard to believe what trucks are selling for these days.
Also ordering a truck with same tanks on both sides and same steps on both sides will save you so much money and time down the road. Once you delete it it’s straight forward! 😎
I'd go grass burner. Those vertical big stacks aren't cheap and this route keeps them looking great. DEF makes a mess and stains those pipes. Plus it probably gets rid of that squeeky bushing now that it's moving with the cab.
I like the idea of connecting the weed burner to the horizontal exhaust. That way you can put the smooth finish tool boxes on both sides, and have symmetrical cab panels also. You're already spending $200,000, what's a little more money gonna do?
I've got a dumb idea what about running the exhaust behind the cab. For a diffrent look other then old school look or run the grass burner and come directly off the scr with a u- pipe and go back to old school qith a hidden def tank
Fake stacks with the weed burner seems to be the way to go. That way, the stacks won’t deteriorate from the extreme regen temperatures, plus you get that old school storage box step.
So bottom line is after reading the comments and my personal opinion is that the best way is to delete it or figure out a way to manufacture a pipe to come back into a y-pipe making a grass burning exhaust functional ‼️
It's not just people running off road. There are lot's of truck stops and customers with gravel lots. You will run into the same problems with blowing dust up on the truck.
Yes and speaking with experience weed burners do kick up loads of dust. The last two trucks I've driven are weed burners and on the last one I actually adjusted the outlet turn sideways so it wasn't blowing completely on the ground.
Active pipes are just for looks also. It's not like having dual exhaust makes it breathe any better, the dpf is the bottleneck so splitting it after the dpf does absolutely nothing for the performance of the truck. Might as well make it look cool and symmetrical with the weed burner. 😎
A lot easier to keep clean when they aren’t functional. I’ve got a w990 and it’s a chore to keep the one stack clean since they only have one stack hooked up. I’d rather have two fake stacks then one fake and one real.
Personally I’d want the oldschool look of the stacks but have it be functional. The missing toolbox doesn’t matter for me. I like the look of the stacks but I don’t do things for show. Wouldn’t put in the money just for show. I get the application of having the horizontal. I’d rather spend money to allow the stacks to be functional than to waste money on a visual piece. Even though people won’t really notice, I’d know it was just for show and I’m not about having something that does nothing. Plus the stacks are great hand warmers during the winter when you’ve gotta be outside lol
Just my personal preference here, but I would rather die than use that grassburner/EPA exhaust crap. Full active stacks for me, or nothing. However, nice work on all the trucks. I wish I could be there to work on them too.
