Fascinating programme! I never understood why the Cybermen were not brought into the Pertwee era. They were second only to the Daleks in the top monsters so their omission in Jon's era just seems strange. Surely they would have really boosted the ratings?

This is the series I look forward to all the time and it’s nice looking back on the past few episodes.
Also, the low viewing figures of Inferno was CRIMINAL!!!

I hope I am not on my own for telling this story, but seeing Speerhead From Space when I was a kid caused me to develop some would say an irrational fear of department store mannequins. Especially ones with bits missing.
It took members of my family a while to figure out what caused this. Thankfully it was something I eventually grew out of.
I have really enjoyed all these videos you have made. But I do wonder what Number 1 in the Top 40 TV programmes always was. I assume it's a BBC News bulletin.
    Greeting from Australia

No one can top Roger Delgado as the Master. He just fits as the renegade time lord. I’m not saying the other actors that play the Master are bad not by a long shot but Delgado is my favourite version of this character.

The Sea Devils (that surprise repeat of 27/5/1972) Seems like it may have suffered a triple dose of handicap! Not only being a repeat on a morning... not only being repeated in late Spring with summer approaching! 27 May would be a very likely part of that year's Spring Bank Holiday weekend, so a lot of WHO audience would be off to the coasts or elsewhere for probably perhaps the first chance of a "sunny weather" family break! P.S Great to see you’ve opened up the first of the Tom Baker seasons.

This fantastic series has made several things clear to me: 1 - Almost every Classic story of Doctor Who had low ratings. 2 -Almost every story considered meh/sub-par by fans tended to have comparatively high ratings. 3 - Ratings say absolutely NOTHING about the quality of the episode and even overall story, thus a highly rated story in no way means it is a highly regarded story!. 4 - The BBC apparently used ratings to demand “more types of stories like the highly rated ones” as they failed to understand the difference between highly regarded (see #3). Which has led to the crazy ups and downs in Doctor Who story quality for most of its lifetime, Classic and New Series, LOL!

Great video, all Dr Who eps are on BBC iPlayer at the moment so I'm binging like a maniac. I do think Inferno drags on a bit. Can't imagine seven whole weeks of people telling Professor Stahlman to shut down the drill. I started to wish for destruction, great though it is.

Whilst Roger Delgado’s death was heartbreaking, at least he manages to deliver a chilling and wonderful performance as the Master for the very last time and will be the best version of the renegade time lord.

I am very sceptical of official viewing figures. They are obtained by certain people keeping a viewing diary. Let’s say that to get a true picture of viewing, you need to ask 10% of viewers (in my view even this is too low a percentage to have small statistically significant differences). So you’d need to ask about 4 million viewers in the 1970s. I’ve been watching Dr Who since 1965. Not only have I never been asked what I watch, but I have never ever met anyone who has. In short they ask too few people to tell whether 4 million or 8 million people really watched an episode.

Yes, these are not actual figures but estimates extrapolated from a much smaller population. We can't be sure of the real numbers but I suppose it's the only thing we have.

I think most fans of the original Who all agree that the 70s were indeed the "golden age ". We have three people to thank for bringing it to being: Barry Letts, Terrance Dicks, and of course, the great Jon Pertwee. They put Doctor Who on a course that would ensure that it would become an institution, regarded with the same reverence as Star Wars and Star Trek.

A lot was done with little money. Great ideas made up for less than impressive sets. Still there were good special effects here and there. For a person living in Australia, it was great when the Doctor went to various parts of the UK. Small villages for example.

a reason why a 'fan' should not 'review' - you started out stating 1999 viewing figures 2mill..'but choices...greater etc etc'..but then stat early 70's 7 - 8million...well...i can assure you as i was there....the radio was the only competition back then! with a couple of channels!! you cannot have it both ways.

  • @televisedfeedback6660
    @televisedfeedback6660 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Quick question, is there a way to access the viewership numbers of the shows with higher viewership than Doctor Who for each episode? The channel here is nice in getting a fair amount of perspective on the show itself, I'm a bit curious about how the network was doing overall. I made a previous video far far far less detailed than this on the ratings and had not factored in competition and the network health overall.

Those are some bad looking dinos; wish they'd been able at least to use ones like those from the same era's US show, Land of the Lost, which I'm sure is also laughed at nowadays, but at least wasn't by us back when it came out. I think that'd have really bumped up the ratings. But it shows what a great show and Doctor this was that those dollar store hand puppets couldn't stop it from being a good watch.

An even better thing about Spearhead from space being shot fully on film is it can be fully transferred cleanly to any aspect ratio without cutting anything,as with film, the wider ratio you
Go,the more you see,as even though it was shot in 4:3,if you zoom it out, you’ll see more of the frame than you ever could originally,it’s the great super-power of film

@1:17:42 What ratings are these? I think some other story is listed here? No episode of the Three Doctors had any ratings as low as the 7millions (as it says in the slides preceding and following this one). And no worries, not trying to be a jerk, just curious what the actual places were?
