Many merchants in Portugal and Spain were Jewish as Jews were not landed Gentry and therefore they often had full fleets and merchants in many ports. The Delanos immigrated to New England area where many families of Portuguese descent ended up, even in the 1600's-1700's. Franklin Delano Roosevelt was a descendant of this line - though he often brisked at mention of possible Jewish roots on both sides of his family. The name was often Anglicized to "Delaney" in the British Isles and America.
