Actually never been to Groningen but always liked the slogan the tourism board came up with to promote the city because its like a cute play on words : "Er gaat niets boven Groningen" which translates as " There is nothing above Groningen". It of course means that its the best city but there is also literally nothing above it on a map because its the northern most big city in the country.

I moved to the city of Groningen when I was 18, now at age 31 I still live there and absolutely love this place. Hit me up if you need some tips and/or help!
I have watched a few videos of you, but then I can also rightly say that you 2 are one of the very few who come outside Amsterdam and enjoy our little country. There is more than just Amsterdam or Den Haag and you make use of that.
Nice to see you up here in the north! Was this filmed in August? It looks very quiet for Groningen standards. During summer, most students are gone and many other people are on holiday, so the city has a more relaxed vibe. As soon as the students and vacay people are back, it's a very crowded city. Sooooo many cyclists everywhere. As the video shows, Groningen is a bit of a raw city, a bit messy here and there. It has its charm.
@@nateandkatrinadotheworld Ah, that explains it. The academic year started on September 2nd. Happy to hear you had a great time. Also, both your pronunciation of Groningen is very good. Welcome back!
I went to visit Groningen (city and province) almost a year ago, it was actually province number 12 out of 12, it was so cold and rainy, and I started to be sick, I learned later that I had my first Covid, but still, I enjoyed my weekend there so much, this city has a vibe, I went on top of the Forum at the end of the day and was disappointed to have missed the view on daylight, but I was gifted with such an amazing and beautiful sunset that I was glad I didn’t go there earlier. I think sometimes things are meant to be. It’s definitely a city I want to go back to, but in spring to see if the vibe hits different 😊 On my way home, the next day, I went up north to go to the Noordkaap, such a strange feeling when you leave the civilization, and there is nothing but warehouses and windmills (the white ones not the older ones) as you reach the extreme north of the country. P.S. I really wonder who you censored with that clown face🤔😂👌🏼
Also wanted to say that I really like your energy in your videos guys, even though I have visited a lot also, I often discover things that I missed or it makes me want to visit some places I haven’t been to yet even more but I like your vibe also between you two. Your videos are so entertaining. I’ve been watching a few videos from the other American couple that someone mentioned earlier, but no offense to them, it’s really different and I enjoy their videos a lot less🙈
Thanks so much for the kind words! The city does have a cool vibe. I bet the sunset was awesome up there. Ww are always finding things we missed in vlogs and blogs, and our comment section 🤣), that make us want to revisit places. ✌️❤️💙
I think you mean by warehouses area De Eemshaven. That is an industrial area including a power plant. Kind of In the midst of it there is a port (accesible by train). You can take a boat from there to for instance Borkum, a nice German island (when arriving there you catch like a sort of train (included in the ferry ticket) and ride to the central village, and you step out in the middle of the village. And this coastal village is very easy to explore by foot. Or, if you like, you can rent a bike and explore the rest of the island.
Martini tower is named after Saint Martin. I think maybe the little geese you saw at 4.33 might be a reference to him as well. The painting at 15.00 is a portrait of the first woman who studied at a Dutch university. Aletta Jacobs, who was also the first Dutch female doctor and she fought for the right to vote.
I had the pleasure of visiting this beautiful city and absolutely fell in love with it. What a beautiful gem! I tried the eirbal which they made fresh for me. I found it absolutely delicious. I tried the bitterballen which were amazing as well. Thanks for this great video!
Was born and lived in Groningen till I was 9. Still came there to shop for years on end. It changed a bit though. I remember walking down the Herestraat, the main shopping street and running into a man in a wheelchair feeding the pidgeons. He gave out the food to kids and even asked people to please help him clean his pee bottle (don't know the real term but it was not messy and he asked the adults!). He always got help and put a smile on the kids! So much has changed since then, from the Martinitoren and the square in front where the market is, you can see a house that is occupied by students, Vindicat or whatever. The students there caused lots of problems and the shopping is not what it used to be. That is not fully on the students though. I am glad you loved it but I wish you could have been there years ago! The eierballen would have been there too!
I live not too far from the city of Groningen, but in the province. The Korenbeurs was not always an Albert Heyn.. lol. As the name says "Grains-exchange", this was the place in the northern part of the Netherlands where grains were traded. Farmers and collectors came here with there samples of their grains to find buyers and then make a deal. This marketplace was a very important tradingplace in the Netherlands. Lovely video about my nearest city.
Nice to see you visit us 😀👍 , you picked a quiet day for a visit ...most young people were still recovering from the night before i think. Thanks for sharing.
Groningen was fantastic. We will definitely be back because we barely scratched the surface on everything there is to see and do there. You live in a great city!
Absolutely awesome video! Finally someone visits somewhere other than Amsterdam and you guys made such a good showcase of my home❤❤ niets boven Groningen 🎉
Native Groninger, lovely video. Thanks for visiting the town. Think (?) you missed the most beautiful piece of the city, although you were closeby: het Hoge der A, with our canal houses. And near the end of it our beautiful English landscape Park, het Noorderplantsoen. If you like classic huge mansions, take the bus to Haren or cycle over the Rijksstraatweg. Quite magical
I live in Groningen almost 30 years now and I don't like eierballen at all 😁btw the building with the grocery store is the old grain trade building ("Korenbeurs"), where all the grain in the province was traded.
Which is why it has so much windows, so grains could be inspected better. I believe it is one of the earliest examples in Groningen using this sort of construction, with an iron skeleton allowing such large window area.
@@nateandkatrinadotheworld And thank you for the video! I live in the area near the university and that korenbeurs AH. I find it has the perfect blend of a lively and yet relaxed atmosphere.
Thank you so much for the video. I have a trip in 2 weeks that will bring me to Zwolle and I was thinking of visiting Groningen and Assen. If I go I will have been to 8 of the 12 provinces of the Netherlands! I love the country!
How quiet the city is! You were in the city during the quietest time of the year, now that the holidays are over, the city is bustling again and the streets are packed with people and the city is alive again.
So relaxed yet so much to see even in this short vid. My god the esthetics over there ! Always thought Groningen was a kind of dull. What a SURPRISE ! 🌹
Finally Americans in our lovely city. As said here, there is more than the west of Netherlands (nothing against it though, it also has enough charm). Now.pleazs come visit the rest of our province, there are vast places like het Wad (Waddenzee). Visit areas like Het Hogeland (used to be a county and region, but it is now only a region). Please blog about it.
The Martini church tower was closed halfway because people 'fell' from the higher places a few times. You used to be able to get much higher. Oddly despite the securities on Forum somebody even 'fell' from there already. I wish i could climb all the towers there. It's such a beautiful city. The view from the top of Belastingdienst Kempkensberg is also epic.
It's so cool te see a video of tourists visiting my home city! Thanks for making and sharing this video! Also, next time try an "Eierbal" with "Joppiesaus" from a snackbar that makes the "Eierbal" themselves. (a lot do). Might be personal but I just love the mix of that sauce with it.
Thanks for making this video of the city where I live for a while. Groningen is a great and welcoming city that never sleeps. Lots of live music and open sessions. Different from most other cities in the Netherlands you don't have mandatory closing times for bars and clubs so if you have the energy and the budget you can enjoy the type of bar of your choice until dawn and visit bars 24/7. Next time take a walk at Noorderplantsoen, a very nice, vibrant and old park. My 800 year old birth town Zierikzee in the South West of the Netherlands combined with a visit to the Stormvloedkering and the beaches would make a very nice and interesting trip for you. We have beaches that will make you jealous 🙂.
Groningen is not unfamiliar to me. In the past, I went to two hospitals there (Martini and UMCG, the last one standing for Universitair Medisch Centrum Groningen), I went to school there (higher educatiom after high school) and I have worked there. Now I only visit it for De Oosterpoort (a concert venue) and Martiniplaza (theater). I live about 30-45 minutes (by car) or 60 minutes (by bus) away from Groningen. Btw, did you see that there's a bus station right next to the train station? Was kinda hoping to see it here 😂😂 Actually, I was there last week Thursday and I went to a record store (Plato) and a bookstore (Van Der Velde). Groningen is one of the few cities (along with Nijmegen) I actually enjoy being at.
Great video! How nice you came to visit my hometown! Let me tell you, it's by far the nicest place to live and raise your kids in the Netherlands! (as you can see, totally not biased) It's fun, safe, not too big, not too small, loads of students (about 35%) so young vibe. I love it! If you come back, let me take you out for a cocktail!
You forgot to show a few other interesting buildings, purely by architecture. First would be the DUO Building, which often is referred to as the 'cruise ship' when viewed from the ring road around the city. Then there is the HQ of the "GasUnie" which has an organic structure inside. The outside of the building is pretty nice to look at since the whole outside is made of masonry and the building is 89 meters tall. It's not only high but it's also pretty big. And of course there is the Euroborg Complex that houses multiple functions, but the main function it has is being the stadium for the local Soccer Club playing in the prime league, FC Groningen. You were already on the square at the Martini Toren, which is called de Groote Markt, and pretty often this big square is buzzling with local (black) markets where you can buy all kinds of stuff. And we can an Ikea. Now that might not sound interesting, BUT, this Ikea is the 2nd largest in all of Europe. Not bad for a relative small city in the North of the Netherlands with about 200,000 population.
I think the reason of any castle stairs or church stairs go left way up it’s because many people are right handed and can fight down better then people going up
Here a little fact about the Martinitoren, it is the biggest building of the whole province Groningen. All the other buildings and new to build buildings aren't allowed to be higher than the Martinitoren.
Hey, I loved watching your video! Great job. I don't know where you guys have been so far but I could recommend visiting the other side of The Netherlands. The province Zeeland (Sealand) has a lot to offer. The most beautiful landscapes, very old towns, The 'Stormvloedkering' (Storm surge barrier), The Zeelandbrug (longest bridge of the country, Beaches with dunes and many delicacies from the sea. I live there myself and I would love to see how Americans react to this region of The Netherlands as most vloggers only visit the cities.
Good luck with the Martinitoren (i life in Groningen , and once climbed it.. and bumped my head 3 or 4 times.. 😂 , if you want a view, go to the Forum building:P
Groningen really is the city that never sleeps so nobody is outside on Sunday cause they just got home. 😁 And the "Korenbeurs", the building where the Albert Heijn is located, means exactly what the (Dutch) name says, it was a place where grain was traded. The English translation of the name would be something like the "Corn-exchange" altough corn is something else. But that's why the light inside is pretty good, they needed to grade the grain.
You guys should do Arnhem, burgerszoo, openlucht museum and airborne museum. There's prob stuff to do for the 80 yrs remembering of marketgarden. To bad you didnt got a city tour by a local, could showed you loads. But loved the little details you captured that locals often miss 👍 groeten uit Groningen!
Just found your channel. Nice but I’m dutch… However I’m constantly guessing who is playing the music scores. It makes for the best vlog in the world. Thanks guys!
I lived for 10 years on a houseboat in the city of Groningen right behind the Martini toren but i never climb it. I also never ate an eierbal. I left Groningen in 2005 so the Forum building wasn't built jet.
The tower was called, I guess, after a sainted bishop called Martin of Tours or Martin the Merciful and his Latinised name would be Martinus Turonensis (316 or 336 to 397). In Latin, the Martinus form is called "nominative" and this is the form when the noun is used as subject to a verb. When it is used to indicate possession, as in Katrina's egg-ball, then the Latin word needs to be in "genitive" form and for words ending in "us" this gets replaced by "i". So Martinitoren means (St.) "Martin's tower".
Groningen was an important pilgrimage destination before the reformation. It had John the Baptist's arm as a relic. Parts of the tower had to be rebuild three times, twice for fire after a lightning strike and and third fire because of the fireworks celebrating the successfull rebuild.
Modern art and contemporary are differet things. Modern art refers to a specific movement, while contemporary is the term we use for anything produced relatively recently, often before the movement or genre it fits within has been fully identified or solidified as a message.
Portrait of Aletta Jacobs: "That woman is sick of everyone's shit!" Yes, she was - literally! First woman with a university degree in NL, first female doctor in NL, renowned feminist/suffragette.
Nate’s mom is married to a man originally from Friesland and he still speaks the language. He says the same thing about the south… 🤣. Thanks for watching!
Seemed to me that Katrina tried to pronounce Martinitoren in the prosody of the Groningen's dialect. And I thought it was well done, but I originate and live far (on the Dutch scale) from Groningen in an extreme ABN [1] region. [1] A joking reference to standard Dutch that in English would abbreviate like GCD - General Civilised Dutch.

Sooooo many cyclists everywhere. As the video shows, Groningen is a bit of a raw city, a bit messy here and there. It has its charm.
First day of September! Loved the vibe, it was a good time to be there.
✌️❤️💙
Groningen Belanda ini seperti ini warnanya Kuy 🤍💚🤍 . Itu sc Heerenveen yah 🤍💙 ( ❤️ ).@@nateandkatrinadotheworld
That clouwn face was pretty acurate ;P it was a picthure of Trump . There was an exibition of him becauce of the eletions in America
Thanks for the info and for watching!
I had the pleasure of visiting this beautiful city and absolutely fell in love with it. What a beautiful gem! I tried the eirbal which they made fresh for me. I found it absolutely delicious. I tried the bitterballen which were amazing as well. Thanks for this great video!
My favorite city ....😍
We can see why!
Love seeing people from different countries visiting my home city!! Its weird but kinda cool! 🫶🏼
Hopefully we did it justice! Thanks for watching!
@@nateandkatrinadotheworld you did for sure!! Loved it🙂
Was born and lived in Groningen till I was 9.
That man was called Jan Roos in the wheelchair. The man with all the medals decorated.
Groningen has improved massively in my opinion. Many ugly buildings have been demolished/upgraded and no more cars and buses on the grote markt.
If only we had a time machine... we still think it was pretty great but can understand how things can change over the years. Thanks for watching!
Groningen is such a great city. Thanks for watching!
Nice to see you visit us 😀👍 , you picked a quiet day for a visit ...most young people were still recovering from the night before i think. Thanks for sharing.
It seemed that way for sure! Thanks for watching!
My home town. The best and most friendly city of the Netherlands. Thank you for this promo. Welcome Americans❤
It's a fantastic city! Thanks for watching!
Thank for presenting your view of my beloved city! You did a great and honest job... It;s paradise here!
Thanks for watching! It's easy to say nice things about a fantastic city like Groningen!
Thanks for visiting my city and taking the effort to make a nice and fun video of it.
We are glad that you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching!
Aww, thanks for much! We will have to come back to see the things we missed!
I agree. You have missed some of the best corners. Another Groningen lover here.
Nate guessed the corn/grain trading thing. We appreciate you watching!
@@nateandkatrinadotheworld And thank you for the video! I live in the area near the university and that korenbeurs AH. I find it has the perfect blend of a lively and yet relaxed atmosphere.

Thanks for visiting our lovely Groningen! I was born not far from Groningen, went to uni there and still live in the area now.
It's a beautiful city! Thanks for watching!
I live there, welcome to Groningen!
Thanks! We had a great time!
Makes me happy seeing people enjoy the city of what i'm proud off!
Groningen was great! Thanks for watching!
@@nateandkatrinadotheworld Hope to see you guys again!
Thank you so much for the video. I have a trip in 2 weeks that will bring me to Zwolle and I was thinking of visiting Groningen and Assen. If I go I will have been to 8 of the 12 provinces of the Netherlands! I love the country!
Highly recommend Groningen - such a great city. Have fun on your trip!
beautiful and interesting video again, I really enjoyed it again, thank you both for the effort and time to do this again. greetings from Limburg
Thank you! We love exploring… Will definitely be back down south at some point!
Best City of the Netherlands
Many people think so! We can see why! Thanks for watching.
Hope you enjoyed it here! Great city to live in as well
It is a great city! Thanks for watching!
How quiet the city is! You were in the city during the quietest time of the year, now that the holidays are over, the city is bustling again and the streets are packed with people and the city is alive again.
We kind of appreciated the quietness since we live in Amsterdam. But we will definitely be back in the future. Thanks for watching!
Oh noes! You missed two of the best hotspots of the city - Hoge der A and next to it, a park named Noorderplantsoen. And you were so close :-)
Noorderplantsoen is soooooo pretty ❤❤❤, been there 6 years ago
Nice to see how you experienced Groningen. I work there and live in a town 30 minutes driving from Groningen. Keep up the good work.
It's a great city. Thanks for watching!
Such a lovely video! It's fun to see the places you see daily through strangers' eyes :)
Thanks for watching!
Glad you guys enjoyed beautiful Groningen! ❤
So relaxed yet so much to see even in this short vid.
My god the esthetics over there !
Always thought Groningen was a kind of dull. What a SURPRISE !
🌹
Glad you enjoyed it!
that AH use the be the stockexchange building in Groningen. xD
Lived in Groningen for 3 years now! its a wonderful city to study and live in.
So many places to visit... Thanks for watching!
We do love a good tower climb. ;) Thanks for watching!
Lived there from 2003 till 2010. For me still the most beautiful city in the Netherlands.
It is quite beautiful! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for watching. The eierbal might be a one-and-done thing for us. ;)
I'm from Groningen and this was cool! Nice to see you go to Da Vinci, one of the best restaurants in Groningen in my opinion
The food was really good and we loved the city. Thanks for watching!
Love the eierbal 🤩🤩
It is a great city, we will definitely be back in the future! Thanks for watching!
We are like small Amsterdam
Same kind of architect but also a lot of nature and we got a lot of culture and art.
It's a great city! Thanks for watching.
You are the first Americans showing good places in the Netherlands and moving to diverend citys
Groningen is fantastic! Thanks for watching!
My city for almost 40 years, the "eierbal" is like a national treasure, just like the Martinitoren or like we say " de Ole Grieze".
It's a fantastic city. Thanks for watching!
If you can you should visit Delfzijl near Groningen on a wensday its small but you get to see the beach.
Added to our list! Thanks!
Thanks for showing Groningen to the world 😊
Any time! Thanks for watching!
The beautiful Albert Heijn used to the Corn Exchange.
Was kinda hoping to see it here 😂😂
Actually, I was there last week Thursday and I went to a record store (Plato) and a bookstore (Van Der Velde). Groningen is one of the few cities (along with Nijmegen) I actually enjoy being at.
Yeah, Groningen! Thank you, it's my town!
It's a great town! Thanks for watching!
18:00 yes because gingerbread is speculaas not the other way around.
Nice to see your video from Groningen. Best wishes, Peter
Thanks for watching!
We can totally see how it would be a great place to grow up. Thanks for watching!
You should visit the 11 fountains in Friesland! In the cities from the famous Elfstedentocht
We will have to add it to our list!
Too much to do in one day... thanks for watching!
Thanks for sharing a place where my ancestors lived. 😁
Thanks for watching! It's a great city!
Y'all visited my home city ^^ Glad y'all had a great time :)
We really did! Thanks for watching!
I think the reason of any castle stairs or church stairs go left way up it’s because many people are right handed and can fight down better then people going up
Wow Americans in Groningen the city where I live. I hope you both enjoyed in Groningen!
We did! It was a great city!
Here a little fact about the Martinitoren, it is the biggest building of the whole province Groningen. All the other buildings and new to build buildings aren't allowed to be higher than the Martinitoren.
Fun fact! Thanks for sharing and for watching!
Thanks so much!
Zeeland is the ONLY province where we have not filmed a video! It’s going to happen for sure… just not sure when.
Good luck with the Martinitoren (i life in Groningen , and once climbed it.. and bumped my head 3 or 4 times.. 😂 , if you want a view, go to the Forum building:P
You must have not watched the entire video... we did both. ;)
Thanks for the info and for watching!
The Forum was build between 2011 and 2019

You guys should do Arnhem, burgerszoo, openlucht museum and airborne museum. There's prob stuff to do for the 80 yrs remembering of marketgarden.

Houseboat life! That’s very interesting!

Did you do the glass balconies in arnhem?😮
We are going to eventually do an entire Arnhem vlog and those might make their way into the video... thanks for watching!
Why did you go to the hanging kichen in Appingedam.
We actually didn't make it out to Appingedam this time.
Nate and Katrina you almost bin in the nicest town of The Netherlands, called Winsum, in Groningen :D (the town where i am born) :)
Almost... maybe next time!
Modern art and contemporary are differet things. Modern art refers to a specific movement, while contemporary is the term we use for anything produced relatively recently, often before the movement or genre it fits within has been fully identified or solidified as a message.
You should have tried Knol's Koek(cake)!
Dang! Next time!

Pronunciation is not usually our strong point. ;) Thanks for watching!
