- Canoeing: River Spey with my 8 year old daughter Maya, her mum Lina, Katrina Skeath and our collie Billie Bonkers.
It is a delightful river in the NE of Scotland. We took thee and a half days to run this section from Loch Insh to tidal water at Spey Bay. We wild camped throughout. I have guided on the river for many years but this was the first time for Maya.
There can be a lot of tree problems on the first section and it shouldn't be taken lightly.

😊 thanks. It was a great trip for Maya (and us)
Loved watching this. Reminded me of my trips down the Spey many years ago. 🤗
Glad you enjoyed it. I am looking forward to being back on it October. Two trips booked.
@@RayGoodwinCanoe fantastic! Hope you have an amazing time, which I'm sure you will!
@@LoonyDragon76 I always look forward to it. Normally done a couple of weeks after I get back from a Canada trip. Love the wild camping and the scenery and enough ww to make it fun.
This is such a lovely video. Thanks for sharing such magical memories.
You are so kind
Maya has some respectable paddling skills. Good job Ray.
Getting there. She really came on out in France last summer and started making independent decision up in the bow rather than just follow my commands. I was chuffed to bigs.
That child has a good solid foundation for life! If only more could have that chance!
Thank you. I try my best for her. As an older dad I am trying to pack the adventures in while we can.
Great vid! 🛶👍👊
Thank you
Wonderfull , this is exactly what kids need
Thank you. We do our best to give Maya lots of little adventures.
Special memories being made - wonderful!
Yep it was pretty special sharing it with Maya. best wishes.
Fantastic Ray!
thank you. It was a great trip and the challenge was to show that.
The 1000th view. Try saying that out load.... one-thousandth A real lisp teaser. Excellent video. ‘Tis my first visit to your channel. Looking forward to many more.
Cheers, the Snail
I will have a wee dram to celebrate the one thousandth view this evening. I will toast to you. Thanks.
Ray Goodwin Cheers
Fantastic wee film. I came across it via the Venture Canoes site... Now I need to buy a canoe LOL
Thank you for you kind comment. Yep lots of adventures to be had with a canoe.
Ray I often paddle with my son who’s 9. So with this in mind when you pack your boat do you tie everything in or go with the Bill Mason bags on a leash set up thereby having room in the boat to get back in in the event of a capsize?
I am going to cover this in the future. However Bill changed his advice in his second book and advocated tying stuff in in a serious situation. So it really depends on situation: we are off to paddle the Great Glen in Scotland next week. On the canal sections gear will just be places in the canoes and not tied or leashed. On the open water we are most likely to lash all the main gear down to provide extra floatation if things go badly wrong. On the Spey with full expedition kit I don't want all my gear loose on leashes as it would be a nightmare in the water with a real risk of entanglement. But I normally put my 'day' bag and camera case on a leash so they cannot go adrift. I would suggest on a hot day is a safe location practising self rescues with your son. It should be fun for him. Hope that helps a little.
Ray Goodwin thanks ray look forward to seeing your next instalment of videos they have been a real help.
Great vid Ray, thanks for taking us along. Which month was this? atb
Thanks for your kind comments. The very start of June 2018.
Gkad you ate taking her out but emphasize keeping her paddle in the water and teach her a hard brace.
That was seven years ago. Each learning point in its own time. This was a big experience for her. No need for her to brace in there. Yep she has expeditioned in Canada twice since then as well as UK and France. She has developed into a really good bow paddler.
