    A few comments here: First considering there were a thousand or so British citizens on the islands and they were taken over by a totalitarian police state that murdered their own people it can be concluded that the Falkland War was the largest hostage rescue operation in history. Second, I know this is a parody of "The Battle of New Orleans", kind of separate theme from the original song, but inspired nonetheless. Third, I wonder if the Argentines aren't more offended by the "football" comment than losing the islands.

    May God save the Queen!
    I remember the Falklands War very cleatly. The USN relieved Royal Navy Frigates, Destroyers, & Aircraft Carriers from their NATO patrols so that they could support the British Invasion Fleet.
    I remember that our American military was formed and built upon the British Royal Navy, Marines, Army, Air Force traditions and organization!!!

    • @elliotttheneko
      @elliotttheneko 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      The US's strategic situation is roughly the same as the UK's, latter being a highly industrialised ex-superpower on an island that can focus on its navy, former being a highly industrialised superpower on a continent with very few enemies (and those that are are too weak to challenge it)
      Thus logically a focus on the navy and air force while maintaining a small but professional army works/worked excellent for both
      Plus historically naval power had always been a more useful investment over land power

    I am reminded of a quote by Admiral Cunningham during the operation to evacuate Allied forces from Crete. The Royal Navy was taking a belting from Nazi land-based air attacks from Greece (made by planes that had been shot out of the sky during the Battle of Britain - but no British fighters over Crete to speak of). With 19 ships lost and many wondering if they could continue, Cunningham said "It takes three years to build a warship, but 300 to build a tradition - we are not letting the Army down". - and they didn't. Only the Brits could have pulled that off because they know how to bite the bullet and press on regardless. All three (four if you count the Marines as a separate service) contributed. It was, as Wellington said of Waterloo - 'a close run thing'. The Argentine Air Force in particular performed to the max.

    We Yanks have long known that tune as The Ballad of New Orleans, the story of a little scrap with had with you people back in 1815. The story it tells is, of course, completely historically accurate. My favorite verse goes:
    We fired our cannon 'til the barrel melted down
    So we grabbed an alligator and we fought another round
    We filled his head with cannonballs 'n' powdered his behind
    And when we touched the powder off, the gator lost his mind.
