I think Steve's Stories Vol. 2 is officially the most anticipated vlog. Your Dad's stories are fantastic and I'm sure your Mom has some good ones too. Can't wait for those!
He probably should have just backed away and disengaged from the situation as soon as he saw the gun. He shouldn't have kept trying to convince the guy that he wasn't with the police because if that lunatic didn't realize that things could have got ugly. It's very hard to do the safest thing though in unexpected circumstances like that. I'm just glad that he didn't get hurt.
As far as I can remember, Stephen has always meant the vlog to be a memory time capsule of his life so he can remember it and preserve these memories for years to come, so a vlog like this where his family talks about their memories is always a welcome addition. Like he said, they won't be around forever, so capturing and preserving their memories as soon as possible means more chances to get a larger amount of things preserved. I'm always up for more stories like this!
I like how you want to preserve your parent's stories. I have been doing this with my Grandmother. She turned 98 this year and has the stories to go along with it. I've got several on video, but there are always more. The things I like to capture are "how are things different/same?" What changes are the most prevalent in your memory? What did you like to do when...? (when you were a child/teen/with your friends/out of school, etc.) What was ___________ like when you were a ________? How did you meet _____? If you could have kept something from your childhood what would it be and why? (could be a toy, a friend/family member, something in society or government, anything) Makes them think and it gives you a view at them as a person and not just who they are to you today
Your father is one of the best people ever. He has a great sense of humor and is a generous spirit without ever wanting anything in return. Now thanks to the vlog, I now know that he also is very capable of handling dangerous situations very well. I have nothing but respect for him.
I hope to see more "Steve's Stories", your dad's led a long and interesting life and it's just nice to hear someone's stories whether they've led a similar life, so you can relate to them, or a totally different life, so you can be intrigued by them.
I'd love to hear more stories from both your parents! It's a shame that your mom's stories didn't make it onto the vlog this time around, but your dad's stories were awesome. As for my family, my mom is the family storyteller. My personal favourite is the time (long before I was born) when she and her parents accidentally left my sister (who was about 10) at a local corn stand.
I love hearing old stories like this. It's so interesting to hear what other people have experienced in their lives. Once my grandmum told me about when she was a little girl in the Philippines during WWII. There was rationing going on so each member of her family would go separately to try to get more food. On one occasion one of the Japanese soldiers gave her an apple as a special treat and that always stuck in her memory. He apparently never said anything and she never knew why.
Wow those stories had me at the edge of my seat! Your dad is brave and handled that tough situation really well! Also, Sagan had the look of a kitty who loves cuddles from his mama, just not as much lol.
Yes! You are correct, video more of your fathers stories...I wish I had some video memories of my Dad who passed away in 2004.You will not regret filming as much as possible :)
One day, in the far future, I can only imagine Mal's paintings being in a museum or in a historical study of video games being revarnished by some random historian.
Listening to your dad reminds me of hearing my grandma tell stories from her youth. Sure, a Karelian war refugee and a Myrtle Beach water meter guy have wildly different stories to tell, but they way they do so is somehow similar, and they're both interesting in their own ways. I would really appreciate having more of these!
Stephen Plays, Mal Makes, why not add a new channel to the list? Steve's Stories! Obviously not updated as regularly, maybe a once a month thing, or less. Just an idea. At the very least make a playlist devoted to just your parent's stories. That wouldn't be too bad.
This has been the best vlog I have seen in a long time. I love your thought about preserving these stories and your father is a very interesting man and my favorite character on the vlog.
My dad had a similar job. And the fear of dogs is no joke. He was on the job for maybe six months when he got attacked by a dog. Let's set the scene here, my dad, who is shorter than me by a good bit, is checking an elderly lady's meter for her and the lady had a bigger dog that she kept for company. The dog remained calm for the visit up until my dad turned to leave. The dog ran at my dad, who knew better than to run from a dog chasing him, jumps, and bites my dad's arm. The lady struggled to get the dog off of him but finally did and one hospital visit and a wrapped up arm later he comes home and tells me the story. Moral of the story, please watch your pets for their safety and others like your friendly neighborhood meter reader and mail man.
I think it's a great idea to document your loved ones and their stories... I should do that too... now that I'm a parent (my son's first birthday is technically today as I type this!), I collect as many stories as I can from my parents and my husbands parents to try and figure out if he's more like me, my husband, or neither of us. After watching this and thinking about my own family, I feel a very strong urgency to buy a camera and just interview everyone on film.
So basically you want to do video memoirs. In fact, written memoirs might a good idea too, that way you would have all those stories in one place. You could look into how to start or if there's services that could help them start.
My parents' fun stories include how they met and various experiences from their honeymoon. But despite the rocky start, they've been together going on 34 years.
Stephen, I loved this blog. i was just thinking about i never actually knew what your dad did as a job. I'm also interested in always hearing fun/interesting stories of peoples lives.
I only ever heard this story once as a kid, and because I tend to sometimes remember dreams as events that actually happened it may not even be true, but I remember hearing my grandfather (my dad's dad) saying that he once knew one of the members of the Beatles (I don't remember which one) before the Beatles were formed/got famous. If my memory serves correctly, he had a chance at being in the Beatles, but declined because he preferred jazz music. As I said, I'm not sure how accurate this story is, but if it's true, then it's pretty cool. As for stories from my parents, my dad was a big joker when he was a kid so I've heard a lot of stories about the pranks he pulled then, and even some as an adult. From things as small as getting some friends to help him turn someone's car sideways in a parking spot between two heavy vehicles, to as large as faking a letter from a government agency to his very racist boss, which said that his boss would be required to employ a certain number of asians in the workplace. Also the time my dad got arrested for shoplifting when he was a teen, but that's not half as fun to tell.
That’s cool how your grandfather knew the Beatles! One cool story similar to that was that my grandmother (on my mom’s side) actually went to high school with Jamie Farr (one of the actors in M*A*S*H)! I especially find that interesting since my mom and I watch that TV show a lot.
Me: *Goes to StephenVlog to check for new videos* Still Me: Maybe he has some new vlogs. STILL Me: *Sees 'He pointed an AK47 at me.'* *click click click click click click click click click click click click*
Also, to answer today's vlog question, one of my parent's favorite stories is how I almost got kidnapped as a child. My mother was in a train station out of the country with me as a toddler and she was busy browsing something in a store when some lady starts leading me away from my mom. Fortunately, in the nick of time, my mother looked around and saw this lady rounding the corner with me in hand and she chased after this woman, asking where the hell she was taking me. The lady had the audacity to say "well, this kid looked so adorable and I wanted to keep him". Long story short, she got me safe and sound. Make me wonder where my life would've went had things gone differently had I rounded the corner before she noticed I was gone :P For those wondering about the stranger's weird explanation, I heard it's because the area is rife with human trafficking, where they would target kids and sell them to other families who can't have children or, worse, cripple them and turn the kids into beggars to instill pity in those passing by. Any money given is taken by the traffickers who crippled the children in the first place.
Okay, so I also almost got abducted as a child, and I don't remember it, but my dad told me about it. Apparently, I was with my dad while he was washing his car, and a suspicious car came over and held out his hand, and I was walking over to him (I had an ear infection at the time), and apparently my dad didn't notice until I was almost at the car and he ran off to take me away from him, and then the car drove off, never to be seen again
I remember when I learned about how fast alligators go when I was at silver springs in FL was terrified think bout all the time Ive been close to those suckers
I'm so glad that I live in Canada where most people don't have guns. I sometimes work at the library in the bad part of town and the scariest thing that I ever encountered there was when this guy pulled out a knife and started going around damaging the property. And this wasn't just like carving something out of the wood pillars, this was like wildly swinging the knife in a horizontal pattern at the walls and such. I was just frozen in place watching him do this but as soon as he turned to look at me a booked it to the front of the library with the other staff. I told one of the librarians about it and they were like "Yeah we know we called the police." and I was just thinking "Well thanks for telling me about it..." This guy had problems with the library before because he would come in and call all the female librarians pedophiles and stuff like that. In the end a male librarians convinced him to leave the building and he was all buddy buddy with him like nothing even happened. This other lady that I worked with told me about a time when this guy brought a bow n arrow into the library and the librarians had to explain to him why that wasn't an appropriate thing to do XD
Man, I need to do this with my Dad. We took him to the Rock and roll Hall of Fame, and he was saying: "oh yeah, we opened for those guys. Oh yeah, I saw him in concert. Oh yeah, that band crashed in our apartment after a gig."
the funniest story i have is one that my dad told me when i went to visit my aunt. He was a groomsman at her wedding and they were in Rhode Island at the time and they were in the middle of a heat wave so during the wedding right as the vows were being said the entire church heard a "thud". turns out my dad passed out right on the stage in church and landed on the radiator. For some reason everytime i hear that i cant help but laugh
If anyone is interested in wild stories I've a fairly long and crazy story of how my mother and father met. My mother was working as a waitress at a diner, and one day a man comes in and sits down with his roofing crew. The man orders his food, and notices my mother then asks her to come over. He asks where she's from and she responds that she's from Guadalajara (Mexico) and after hearing this and how she was living in a trailer house with tons of people he just blatantly tells her to get her stuff together and be ready at 7am because he was going to take her back with him to where he lived. My mother, at a loss of what to do decided (for reasons she still does not understand) to go with this man. So he ends up picking her up and driving hours. without speaking a word back to his hometown in northern texas. When they finally get there, he asks her for her mother's name and phone number. She gives them to him and he calls. He then proceeds to say that he has kidnapped this woman and expects money to be wired to him. She then ends up calling back and telling her mother that this crazy guy gave her a ride and she doesn't even know his name, and that she's ok. After that the rest is history and they ended up staying together.
Here's an interesting story: My mom and dad used to go to Canada, stay in a log cabin and fish a bunch. They went up there for their honeymoon, and they decided they wanted to go out on a boat to fish. They were riding out there, fished for a while, then started to come back, because there was a big storm coming. The motor suddenly died, and the ores couldn't be used because the holders were broke, so they were stuck with this huge storm inching closer. Eventually it started pouring and the winds were very violent, both of them were convinced they were gonna die, but then another boat was coming to shore and saw them, then pulled them to shore. That guy potentially saved my parents lives. Apparently, that storm produced a TORNADO. In Canada of all places!! I guess it was the first one in years. Just their luck, eh?
Stephen, be real with me. No one has such a consistently interesting life everyday. This is all an alternate reality game, Slenderman-style, isn't it? Are the secret messages in your "dad's" stories?
No, this was 20 years ago and long forgotten. If he actively tried to hide his face in an early vlog, it was just because he has an interesting sense of humor, haha
I have been around people who use drugs and the number one thing that is always used is "your a cop" or asking if someone is a cop. Come with being paranoid. Not saying that's what was going on but it might help with the strange aggression.
I had a guy pull out a Glock 44 on me while I was closing at my job once. I had already taken all of our money from the cash registers to where we locked it up and I tried to tell him we were closing. "Walmart doesn't f****ng close! Open the drawer" I signed in to the cash register and pressed the combination to open it up (and signal we were being robbed) and he leaned over and looked inside and said "G******t you stupid b*****d where is all the f*****g money!?" I told him they took it 10 minutes ago and I came back to clean up the department before I went home. He asked me where they took it and I told him I was just a regular associate and I wasn't allowed to know that because my name badge said manager and Walmart says we're too stupid to process that information. For whatever reason he found that really funny and then he left. That ended up saving my life because he went down the road to a gas station and did that to someone else and the police had just shown up and went in the direction he went and shots were fired. He shot the person behind the register at that gas station and they died in critical care. They caught the guy about an hour later with only $88 in his pocket.
Your dad seems like the guy that you could just listen to for hours. He has really seen some crap in his life.
I think Steve's Stories Vol. 2 is officially the most anticipated vlog. Your Dad's stories are fantastic and I'm sure your Mom has some good ones too. Can't wait for those!
your dad handled that situation well. I have nothing but respect for him rn
Gonzy Estavez He's a real trooper.
You can tell just by looking at his face that he isn't making anything up.
Green Triforce I see what you did there.
To be fair, if the man accuses him of being a cop and he runs away, the dude probably shoots at him. It was probably better to talk him down.
As far as I can remember, Stephen has always meant the vlog to be a memory time capsule of his life so he can remember it and preserve these memories for years to come, so a vlog like this where his family talks about their memories is always a welcome addition. I strongly agree with having more Steve stories. Love listening to him speak about anything.
Stephen, your dad reminds me of both my grandpas. They tell a lot of funny and interesting stories! I really enjoyed your dad's stories :)
Listening to your dad's stories was amazing, I have nothing but respect for him; he's been through a lot of interesting situations that's for sure.

😱 so many vlogs today, can't complain about that
here's hoping we get caught up
Steven, I love your dad!
It's really crazy the things that can happen to someone on their life
We just lost my FIL last week and he had the best stories. Get as many of your dad's on camera as you can so you can look back on them later.
Stephen, your dad needs to make a podcast that's just his life stories.
That was quite enthralling
There should be more of this
Yes! I love stories! More of these!
Your parents need their own TH-cam channel to share recipes and tell stories.

For those wondering about the stranger's weird explanation, I heard it's because the area is rife with human trafficking, where they would target kids and sell them to other families who can't have children or, worse, cripple them and turn the kids into beggars to instill pity in those passing by. Any money given is taken by the traffickers who crippled the children in the first place.

Stephen you now have proven to the world your dad has the best stories
Also were you named after your dad or did your parents just like the name
Here's an interesting story:

Huh. Kool.

It doesn't even matter if you're a cop or not, haha. If you are a cop, you can arrest him. If you aren't a cop, you can call one to come arrest him.
MadroxMonoxide777 lol no my point is everyone is a cop when your on drugs

Just don't be so busy preserving stories that you forget to make them. -Literally the deepest, most meaningful thing I have and will ever say.
