Steam Railway at Alston.

The South Tynedale Railway is a modern title for part of an old railway which used to run from the Carlisle-Newcastle line at Haltwhistle, up the hills to the market town of Alston.
Closed by British Railways part has been re-opened as a narrow gauge line.
Here, a hired loco is used for the 14.15. We were going to catch it further down the valley but a notice said the road was closed at some unspecified point . . .

dear Alan, that little tender type car that was on the rear of the loco that ended being pushed tender first, was it a crude type of ETHEL unit? (electric train heating+emergency lighting) there was one of them units left in preserve down at stuarts lane. thay were used to allow steam locos to be able to haul modern diesel loco only carriges to be coupeld together....

Good try, and right in principle, but the unit was holding a compressor, to work the brakes. The loco is obviously not fitted for air brakes.

Nice video, Alan. Been waiting to see if you would go there. We go there when we come up on holiday (most times) and go on the route. Its closed at a point as for a fair few years they've been restoring the track and have only done it with volunteers.

It's somewhere we have been about 5 times, Tim, but never before seen steam. Nice town usually, but now it's full of Gypsies.
