Good to see Housel getting attention outside of traditional finance media. I genuinely believe that he is one of the most interesting thinkers and writers alive today.
Ryan Holiday and Morgan Housel are eloquent and thought provoking. I was recharged (intellectually and emotionally) listening to good thinkers and speakers. I love them both!
I loved the conversation and only afterwards I looked up the guest only to realise that I’ve read the Psychology of Money years ago and absolutely loved it. Great podcast and a great book! Thank you Ryan and Morgan 😊
1:41:54 as a person who has struggled with alcohol, I wholeheartedly disagree with this oversimplification of alcoholism. I chose to stop drinking. That is control. People who can’t NOT drink when going out or who can’t imagine themselves eating dinner without a glass of wine or having fun without alcohol, they are the ones not in control. I invite you to rethink your stance here. The journey for control over my life is what got me to quit drinking. Saying that “a person who can’t have one drink once in a while is therefore out of control of themselves and controlled by alcohol” (paraphrasing) is like saying a person who can’t enjoy heroin once in a while is controlled by heroin. That’s illogical. Alcohol isn’t good for you.
I’ve taught snowboarding since 2004.. the industry is sick and dying despite the profits - to many insecure, entitled and vestibular compromised clowns on the hills .. I am a great instructor but unfortunately the industry doesn’t need that - what it needed are kids who can act as assembly line workers
Would never recommend downhill skiing .. just do cross country or snowshoeing for 1/30th of the cost / aggravation Last season I complained about a fellow employees conduct and his father tried to run me down multiple times on the hill with near misses .. emotional babies and alcohol does not mix with adrenaline pumping speed and risk taking
People willing to pay unlimited amounts on status symbols .. can’t tell you the amount of multi thousand dollar setups I’ve seen being rocked by unskilled ignorants 😅
Interesting topic of conversation for skiing is how much of its culture was grandfathered in from the old world to the new world and in turn the corporate scene .. people just accept that people drink in the parking lots, lifts and on the hill while taking liberties with others well being as being normal The companies for whatever reason don’t seem to take heat for all the related incidents .. it just gets chalked up to the culture of the sport. Seen multiple toxic work environments .. the demographic of instructors is old as sh!t dusters who should not be responsible for other people’s kids and kids teaching kids like something out of lord of the flys Anyhow the sport obviously has allot of upside by there is allot holding it back
Some of the greatest men on n history, in my opinion, had foregone status for purpose. George Washington declining kingship, and Cincinnatus declining emperorship.
Ryan should stop saying Ya, Yes, Sure every couple of seconds and just listen to what the guest says. It's so annoying. Also he says those words with absolute indifference just for the sake of saying something.
Maybe one day you discover the intriguing fact that the least you focus on money itself and try to serve people and help others, the money just comes as a consequence of that people want to reward you for it. And the way we reward each other for services is with money 😊 best of luck

Sounds like they were young and this was a time before phones so like he said they weren’t worried about being out of touch. But the way he tells this story shows how traumatic it must have been. I am shocked he doesn’t bring up guilt… just the fact that he survived
That has to be the shittiest interpretation of that story imaginable. He had no idea that there was any sort of avalanche, so hindsight is 20/20 for keyboard warriors who want to judge others but he responded how most people would in that situation.
Morgan Housel is such a clear thinker and great communicator. I love getting his insights on any topic.
Agreed

What a great conversation. I’ve read books by both writers and find them so insightful.

Great podcast and a great book! Thank you Ryan and Morgan 😊
Excellent episode, with so many life lessons from two of the best authors of our time. Thank you Ryan and Morgan!
Very interesting 🙏

"Taking your family skiing is so expensive, it's out of reach of the middle class! It's crazy! ... I'm taking my family skiing tomorrow"
nice flex
Maybe you are above middle class.
Ryan dropping some serious knowledge!
Just to note, there was no TSA until after 9/11. Aside from that, point taken that very small random occurrences can change things in very large ways.
36:00 as a 35 year old pro athlete this hits had and should be a whole podcast about identity after pro sports
Some people refer to this as an "interview". I see this as more of a conversation.

So did those skiers die? I don't know much about skiing or avalanches. Were they still alive when they found them?
Sadly no, under 6 feet of snow means they would not have any air. 😢
Yes both of his best friends passed away in that avalanche
They are snow longer with us
Which book did Morgan recommend about the Accountant in the great depression?
The Great Depression, A Diary

Something to think about, a podcast and a conversation is not the same, to sit and say, yeh, mhm, yes all the time ruins it for the listener

Why even have a guest if you’re gonna spend the first 30 minutes talking about your own books and the detailed stories of how they became successful
Cos he's cringe AF !!
There is Value in it
Not very stoical of him is it ??
It’s all about intentions

So he left his friends to die in the snow? Didn't notify anyone. No one knew anything until the next day?

Love your quick-hit videos (less than 15 mins) that hit on key points succinctly.
But no 1x1 discussion video should be nearly 2 hours.
Long form discussion is a lost art.
