Just my own teaching James, I don't use water to lift the grain, but rub with white spirit, this also helps take away the dust but doesn't add moisture to the timber. Also, rub it all over and you'll get a good idea of how it will look with the finish applied. It's coming on nicely, Kevin
Looking very nice already! Good job on the corners. Tip for sanding: if you want to easily make sure you've gone over the whole surface (especially when going up grits), grab a pencil and draw some lines all over the surface with the side of the pencil core, like you would do shading. These pencil marks will disappear as you sand, showing where you already sanded and where not.
Looks great. For the corners I would have gotten a fine blade for a skill saw. for the corner routing put tape around to help protect the wood from the bearing or if possible a bearing less bit
The table is magnificent mate! Your patience for tackling this sort of thing slowly and methodically as really gone up. My father was a master joiner and cabinet maker. In his retirement whenever he was in a pub or a restaurant he would run his hand along the underedge of the table and shake his head sadly, if the finish below did not match the finish on top... You, Sir, have passed the test! 😅
James, wish so much I could be there to help you on Cerium. Table top is coming out great. One thing to try & do. Is be the tool that's doing what you want. Eye sight & constant hand feel I find to be an appealing finish. Happy days to see the 4 corners worked out having same grain width on each. Great job & wish you the best. Dennis USA N.C. I can’t imagine it being fascinating as I’ve watched so many of these types of projects now but to someone who hasn’t I guess it must be interesting to see how walnut live edge can look - thanks
Now that Sloe Patrol has a new owner, surely the priority should be to get Cerium in a livable condition. Faffing around with the table when you don't yet have a bathroom or finished kitchen just seems off. Where are you going to live if the new owner decides to up sticks from Kentucky and move onto Sloe Patrol? There seems non of the urgency there was when you started Sloe Patrol.
You’re absolutely right. I am faffing about a bit but it’s not a total waste of time. There are some other higher priorities which I’ll get to very soon. Sloe isn’t going anywhere this side of Xmas and possibly a month or two after that. All will be done in time I’m hoping but you’re right and thanks for the nudge
Initially, I did not want you to cut the edges, as I liked it the way it was. I do understand the danger to your children, and I love the results. It matches all the curves in your boat. I am loving this design. Have the new owners picked up Slow Patrol?
I too didn’t think the round corners would be better and I was nervous about the edging but it’s worked out really well - better than I thought!! The new owners won’t be taking sloe on until the new year so I’ll be looking after her for a few more months
'Anoli' are a species of lizard. (not even the same word, really). Lovely table! I kind of liked the pointy edges - but the curved edges look great also.
I never mentioned anoli !! Thanks for the info though. I liked the pointy edges too but everyone was saying they should go before they injure someone !!
Ditto RetroRegans comments. "The table that James built" You have a huge amount of work to do so why faff so much with a table. Also looks like the kitchen worktop and all the cupboards you have built are covered in stuff and not protected. 😢
The worktops don’t need protecting yet as they need to be sanded back and have the finish applied. The cupboards I’m being very careful around but will cover them - for the rest of it you’re right / there is plenty of other stuff I should be getting on with

Thanks - I’m finding it quite easy to keep track of where I’m sanding on this piece - I did try the pencil idea but I didn’t think it helped me

Looks great. Don’t sweat the lumpiness on the corner. It makes a better transition to the live edge.
