    So for the regular viewers you'll know is a bit different to what we normally do. I'm titling this series Biochemistry Of Performance.
    While you're under no obligation to like this video, if you DID like it, leaving a like and a comment are both very useful for the algorithm but also as a way of voting for things you like.
    It took a lot of hours from both Alex and I (Eoin) so it's useful to know what's worth putting work towards.

  • @lancem1583
    @lancem1583 3 ปีที่แล้ว +27

    ACTN3 is simply the most researched gene, there are numerous genes that contribute to sports performance. It might be the case that having RR is correlated with having other beneficial gene presentations, but it might not. To try and make sports predictions based on one gene alone is quite a leap of faith.

    • @hercules_E164K
      @hercules_E164K ปีที่แล้ว +7

      It's definitely significant though. As the difference between long distance runners and power athletes is quite significant. But of course one gene doesn't show the whole picture.

    • @tyawesomejohnson1672
      @tyawesomejohnson1672 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Having non working copies of the gene is better at keeping you warm because of the vascularity of slow twitch muscle.
      Probably why populations who are in colder climates are more likely to have at least one non working copy of the actn3 gene.

    I have the RX genotype, my 23andme says "your muscle composition is common in elite power athletes" yet throughout my life I've found that I'm better at endurance based sports and aerobic exercise. I CAN do power based sports, but I tend to get muscle injuries very easily, and I honestly barely even notice any gains, I've never been a muscular guy and my muscles tend to stay the same size regardless of how physically active I am. I've taken up endurance running recently and I've found that it suits me well. Maybe it is because I only produce 50% of the ACTN3 protein. Great video by the way!

      I wanna get this test done but I can’t right now cuz my mom won’t allow it but based off everything in my life I think I have the RX. One reason is because I play sports and people tell me I’m fast. I’m 5’6 and can touch a 10 foot rim and if I don’t slack I can grab it. But I’m a very skinny kid almost all my peers have way more muscle than me. Even after a year of working out kids at my school working out the same amount of time have way better results. I think if I was truly RR I’d be explosive and very prone to putting on muscle. Ik it sounds stupid but I’m just going off what I think

    • @AVMAV1
      @AVMAV1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      These tests don’t really matter much for the common person. If you eat right, workout and recover correctly, your body will make the necessary adaptations to what you expose it to.
      Although there a TON of variables associated with “making it to the big leagues” other than genetic tests, these tests can let you know if you can compete and make a difference at the highest levels, such as the Olympics or in a professional league.

      How would you classify yourself in the Ecto, Endo, and Mesodorph body type?
      I'm very curious how those would overlay the RR, RX, vs XX genes.
      I'm a mesodroph with XX (TT) so I'm type 2, but my thighs/glutes and chest put on mass quite easily. Downside is I'm quite sore for longer it seems -- which this video also says. But also giving muscle growth is tied to total output (reps x weight) I can train "harder" (more weight pushed all said and done) than most anyone I've been around especially when weight goes to 80% of 1-rep max, my reps balloon over the others despite their 1rep max being 10-20% higher than mine.

    I have the TT genotype of the ACTN3 gene (uncommon in elite athletes) and the GG genotype of the APOA2 gene (I gain weight if I eat over 22g/day of saturated fat). It sucks in today's world, but if we were living in the wild it means: I could run long distance to find food without feeling tired, I'd be more resistant to cold weather and rain, every time I'd be able to eat an animal the fat would be stored as energy, and my energy would be used more efficiently. So at first glance it sucks, but I'm basically a freakin' survival beast. All depends on how we see it.

      Europeans: 47.3% - Africans 37.7% - East Asians 14.8% - Latinos 43.0% - South Asians 36.3%
      AA
      Likely similar weight on diets high or low in saturated fat.
      People with this variant:
      Europeans: 37.3% - Africans 56.1% - East Asians 84.5% - Latinos 47.2% - South Asians 57.7%

Been at it for about 3 years and I've got a 315 bench, 465 squat, and a 500 lb deadlift, might not be the best but im still improving and if youre in my boat, dont let this gene tell you you cant do something. Theres a lot more factors at play than a single gene.

    I found that I can look at my raw data on the desktop version of 23andMe’s site. Not only did I find more detail on my ACTN3 gene, but also other genes that were not mentioned in their wellness reports. The data in genes I wanted to see were summed up like this - ACTN3 (CC), MSTN (TT), COMT (AA), ACE (GG)
    From what I can comprehend, I can produce a fair amount of force and recover well, and I’m split almost evenly between type-I and type-II muscle fibers - high endurance and high force, I guess. My brain has high dopamine levels, but I can get anxious and stressed to an equal extent. My myostatin gene is normal, not much to say there…

    • @tengu9959
      @tengu9959 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MrCrystalm8
      COMT (rs4680) is a gene that determines how well your body cycles through dopamine and adrenaline; many call it the Warrior-Worrier gene.
      AA, high accumulation rate of dopamine/adrenaline
      GG, low accumulation rate of dopamine/adrenaline
      MSTN is a gene that controls your body’s rate of muscle growth and strength output by deploying myostatin to prevent excessive gains. Those who have a certain mutation, resulting in a lack of MSTN, can grow muscle and gain strength without training at all.
      ACE (rs4343) is associated with your adrenal response - how quickly you can get riled up. ACE is also associated with blood pressure, which could induce slightly greater pumps, and more water retention, depending on your version of the SNP (rs).
      GG, quick adrenal response, high blood pressure
      AA, slow adrenal response, extends to lasting energy

    I have the
    double CC Actn3
    Without really training specifically, say for Cycling. I was exceptionally strong right out of the gate. After one summer of club rides, sone speed workouts, I was shockingly fast. Constantly dropping seasoned cyclists on steel climbs, on flats, I was able to just ride people off of my wheel. I never learned how to technically/mechanically sprint on the flats, but, I could wind it up to around 36-37 mph.. and just grind to the finish line.
    I played baseball as a child and teenager, I was fast, had a good arm and could crush the ball despite being on the smaller stature side of the players.
    I played football, I was impossible to tackle, I was exceptionally fast.
    Strength wise- I worked at a lumberyard and realized something was different when by then end of the summer of my 13th year, I was incredibly muscular yet not bulky. I also have exceptionally hard and heavy bone density, in the measured realm of 2.5 times the normal bone density. When I’d collide with other kids, they would get hurt.. I’d feel bad for them, we were friends.
    I was always athletic, I still am, at almost 60 years old I’m trying to find my endurance capabilities, but it could be detrimental to chase that goal. Who knows.

    Great video guys! it was extremely informative and I'm thoroughly enjoying all of the content you're putting out! I possess the XX variant, but it hasn't stopped me from clean and jerking over twice my body weight as a natural athlete. Determination of an individual's athletic potential is extremely complicated and should not be reduced to one mutation. Just because one has the RR allele doesn't necessarily mean that they will outperform someone with the XX allele given that they have both "maxed out" their full potentials. This should be made clear as to not discourage anyone from further progressing in their training. However, on average the RR allele clearly confers an advantage to overall athletic performance than not having it, but to what extent? Hard to say (ie. if we could isolate ONLY the ACTN3 gene as a predictor of performance ... 2%, 5%, 10% increased potential?).

    I've the TT (XX) gene. I've been getting ankle injuries in my early 30s. Playing basketball, running, rugby. Constantly struggling to build muscle mass - remains lean at best, yet after a decade of training, high strength level (possibly combined with central nervous system), but now realise I've high endurance at high weight - eg 10 sets of 132kg bench for reps or 300-400kg sled push for six-seven tracks etc. May be an interesting thought, that if XX train for years, they can then endure higher volume, longer times, more training - don't know, but I keep being able to endure. I'm also tall 6'4.5, completely Irish genetically so don't know where two XX snuck in; long wingspan, when started running, slower, but can go for longer. It's a strange mix considering the anatomy of Europeans (tall, stocky etc).
    And I shiver in the cold so that's bollocks - could because I'm the Gael in Gaelic ergo, glistening red and ginger.
    Flexible, yes, but won't flexibly endure a bloody tackle.

    • @muskoks5385
      @muskoks5385 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You want to look for the polymorphism rs1815739 if you're looking through the raw files or using something like Promethease. "C" is the wild type and "T" is the stop codon mutated type associated with the ACTN3 deficient R577X genotype.

    • @bradhobbs_
      @bradhobbs_ 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@muskoks5385 thanks! I am looking through the raw files and noticed four different rs numbers for ACTN3 that give C or T as genotype options. I am CC for rs1815739 but TT for the rest. I assume just having one “T” is enough though?

    • @muskoks5385
      @muskoks5385 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@bradhobbs_ I only know the polymorphism I mentioned, I don't think the others have as strong effect as the T allele on R577X. Also it goes to mention that heterozygotes (C;T that is) will not be that affected since they still have a functional copy and thus won't be totally deficient in ACTN3 like T;T homozygotes are.

    Mohamed, your genetic muscle composition is common in elite power athletes.
    Studies have found that almost all elite power athletes (including sprinters, throwers, and jumpers) have a specific genetic variant in a gene related to muscle composition. You have the same genetic variant as these elite athletes

    Hey Lads I know that genes are a quite deterministic subject matter, either you have them or you don't, but if I for example am a XX, is there a way to mitigate the negative Performance effects of these genes, that is turning on or off through lifestyle habits and training? Or is it one that, if I have them I'm gonna be shit at sports regardless?

    XX here and this video needs to be understood as being focused exclusively on athletics. There is far more data to be covered via far better quality video creators that cover the full scope of what realities the XX mutation means in training and everyday life.
    Personal example: at one point 20 years ago, I was morbidly obese, weighing over 325 lbs. Through relearning how to eat and train, I developed a lifestyle that has kept me in the best shape of my life well into my 40s. M currently a lean 160 lbs and stronger than I’ve ever been. However I have next to no slow twitch muscle and get strains easily. So there’s trade offs.
    My point is that the Debbie Downer video here paints a poor reality for those with the XX mutation.
