Thank you sir. I live in hilly areas and have been wanting to purchase an e scooter and couldn’t find which one to get because all these scooters have climb angles and percentages in their descriptions. I watched this video and have an understanding of how steep the hills are where I live. Now I know where to spend my money on. Thank you so much.
I enjoyed the simple explanation brcause i was trying to figure the slope of my front yard because when the repaved my street and instead of grinding down to match the original street inclination (I think that the right term) they just pave over a lightly ground surface. Well as you might of figured the new pavement is now above everyones lawn, driveways, and rain water drain pipe. Now when it rains the front yard about 2-4 ft turns into a pond when it rains moderatly. I fixed this 2 times over the last 20 years and yes I could have just had a dump truck bring dirt but thought it would be nice to learn the mechanics involved to figure out what the front lawns new grade, slope, or inclination would be so when I call the township and explain they need to bring some topsoil to fix my property.
And people wonder why they would even need to take trig in high school or college. You don't need to be a high level college educated engineer to use trig. From landscape to construction to you building your own shed to bike riding to wood working (I've actually used trig several times with my woodworking), everyone may have the need to use and understand various trig functions.
Thank you. Excellent video. Very clear explanation. It would have been easier in school if they taught us the practical uses of math and their applications. I didn't know until later about the uses of vectors, torque, etc.
Thank you so much. I am planning to buy an electric scooter and usually these scooters can manage up to15 grade angle and have been wondering how steep is that.. Now I understand a little bit more. So thank you again!
This method works approximately but is subject to errors in measuring the vertical distance because there is no way to ensure the tape measure is being held perfectly vertically. If you seek greater accuracy in your slope measurement, then the instrument you want is an inclinometer.
I'm sorry, but triangle diagram at the end is wrong. 100cm is the hypotenuse, not the base. Therefore, slope is 26% and angle is 15°. Not far off in this case.
Very logical and informative video. How to calculate slope of taper road with simple instrument. Nice location...-_- witch country ??? I am from India, Mumbai.
Brilliant math question. If the slope is perfectly even: anywhere If the slope is compounded of more and less steep sections, measure any section you like, may need 1 measurement for each section with different pitch. It the slope is a convex or concave curve or a combination, measure anywhere you like, but slope calculated will only apply to the very 1m part that was actually measured. Half a meter up or down might be a different result. Surveyors may measure to top and bottom elevations on a hill and calculate one average pitch, disregarding actual small surface variations.
apprenticemath .. Thank you very much. I'm on a footing crew new to grades, fills, cuts, toe and laser level readings. Your videos help tremendously. Thank you.
Thanks for watching. I have plans to make further videos on grade stick markings, optical and laser leveling, theodolite readings, taking an elevation around a corner. Any skill you came across and was a memorable learning moment? Topics for future videos? Send your ideas over.
apprenticemath .. Well there is one thing.. Our crew is responsible for drilling and poring concrete for the piers and columns for the masons to lay 8" block. My question would be how to make a easy and efficient way to find the 8 1/4" grade to line from level of comcrete to make troweling concrete as we pour from hole to hole more even? I was looking online for possible some light weight tool that could be hung from the string line and adjustable to have the spacing from line to grade but don't seem to find any.. I hope my crude explanation makes any sense. Thanks
The main issue is that when we initially pour the concrete we may over or under fill. We then have to add or remove excess concrete so if there was a tool that was maybe 18" - 24" in length that was height adjustable and light weight we wouldn't have to measure at so many points to make sure the concrete was level and would save time as we usually pour 90 - 120 piers and columns in a day.
Get an iphone, download free bubble level app, point down on slope, it’ll show how many degree grade you wanted to know 😁 But! When we get hit by a solar flare and my iphone is shut, then I’m screwed!!!😅😅😅
You lost me at tangent (I don't know what that is). I just want to see what grade is the driveway I'm trying to walk up with my new hip. This is the second video I've watched that I didn't understand. I think I will just have to stay curious.
Absolutely. However: Accuracy wil be limited to the length of smartphone. Long levels are more accurate. Accuracy is dependent on a crude sensor, designed to flip screen. Accuracy is dependent on software of questionable source or integrity. If display cracks badly, it ends measuring. If battery flat, no measuring. On the other hand, Tape measures & levels don`t need battery. Tape measures & levels are cheap to replace if a tank runs over it (or whatever vehicles you might be in the way of) Accuracy is dependent on remembering 3 things A long level is harder to carry than a cellphone - Thanks for watching.

the 100 you used was the hypo, not the adjacent, the rise is the adj which you didn't measure int eh video, but the video is good thank you
That was great thank you now i know how to use my tan function school never made it seem that simple 😅
Thank gosh !!! out of 5 videos today This is the only one I really understood!
What a wonderful video! Nice and easy way to determine the slope. Thank you!
Very good, now I know how to spend my Saturday night.
Australia, Tasmania - thanks, this makes sense to me!
Thanks!! A great touch of practical application!!
You bet!
Your content is fantastic,thanks.
Most helpful video for me thanks for........
Great video!!!
i have been sick AF for 2 weeks and i missed a lot in my math class and turns out tm is my midterm exam, so thx for saving my life lol
Happy to help!
Great video , I don’t understand the plump part anyone can expand ?
Very nice and well explained cheers.
Great video! Thank you!
quite simple mater thanks for the effort to teach
So that would be (roughly) a 1:4 in oldskool UK road gradient?
Vancouver Canada. Yup, I try not to re-invent the wheel.

Yes, you are right
There is a way...a string level on the tape measure. The end.
Sorry, it was the hypotenuse that was 100 cm long. Not the adjacent.
Thanks for the simple explanation!
That's one hell of a steep street! Can you climb it in 2nd gear with your own car?
Cars are automatic here (in North America), motorbike 2nd or 3rd gear
He mixed up a little bit at the end, 25cm/100cm, not millimeter.
He didn’t want to draw 100cm on his small page.
Thanks! Very helpful!
it is good explanation
thx
awesome thank you
How to measure the height of the soil up to the river level.
How do you figure this out in inches
Same steps, just measure in inches
Thank you!
This only works if the road surface is perfectly straight, not gradually steeper or shallower.
😄😄😂😅
You've come home about that. I like the sound of that
thank you .
but one thing when you pick up the level tube buble was level or not
I'm sorry, but triangle diagram at the end is wrong. 100cm is the hypotenuse, not the base. Therefore, slope is 26% and angle is 15°. Not far off in this case.
I don't think you're right. The hypotenuse should be the slope length, it is the length of the slope as it drops (or gains) 25cm in 100 cm.
Does a level surface have slope?
No, 0/0
@@apprenticemath
The globe believers think it does.
Thanks

Pitch gauge?
Should it not be inverse sin instead of inverse tan?
No sin, nobody wants to know the hypotenuse
@@apprenticemath my bad
@@apprenticemath but the 100 cm you used was the hypotenus not the adjacent
Inches I live in the US we don’t use centimeters
Not yet
I live in the US and I use the metric system

LOL!
Thank you!!
You're welcome!
thanks, very useful
How are you certain the tape is squared to the level?
It is not, but close enough.
How can one be certain the vials inside the beam level are still accurate after years of use? Same thing.
apprenticemath or the beam is straight! ✌️ I worked for LS Starrett Co. so I see these things now. Agree - good for government work!
Exactly. Thanks for watching!
Are you Canada, Ireland or whereabouts?
Can - US border
This looks like a basic Pythagorean Theorem. (a x a) + (b x b) = (c x c)
Sure does, no coincidence
who searched this but had no intension of using this info
or just download the angle meter on your phone and it does it for you, no math involved on your part.
and if your battery dies in the middle of the woods?
@@onlinefriend3889 You're going to have a level and plumb bob in your pocket?
@@onlinefriend3889 I'm more likely to have a working cell phone in my pocket than a plumb-bob, level and tape measure.

At what point of the slope do you do your calculations? Top, middle?

The longer level rides over surface imperfections that can throw off the math better.

Measure 100 cm on the asphalt not the level
Not along the hypotenuse (road)
