- Public servants are supposed to work for the government and for citizens. But what ABC7 News found is that some California cities seem to be keeping the public out - out by keeping some offices locked. abc7ne.ws/3JM9TxP

Honestly, it feels great not to be working around people.
If you're anti-social, that's your issue. But the public doesn't have to subsidize you.
I have worked in the office and home like many of you. Those who are lazy will be lazy in the office or lazy working remotely. If you focus on the poor performers and punish the high performers by making them come in, the good ones will leave. I think Ford had a voluntary early retirement 20 years ago and the top performers took the package and left for GM or Dodge. Ford was left with all the dead wood. Unintended consequences.
I remember that! I know a couple of people with 3! Pensions now! 😂
So true about it though. I went back to school during the pandemic. Everyone complained how they couldn't learn virtually...I got straight As. 🤷♂️ Doing things virtually makes the lazies and drones who can't work without constant direction stand out. They literally gave us material, read this, here are your test questions a month early, go look them up in the reading, here are the answers in case you couldn't find them, here are your unsupervised tests 😂, what did they want? For the professors to take the tests for them while they played on tiktok?
Yeah, I get so mad because of this with my company too. They want us back in the office (gotta pay for that expensive real estate) when I was far more productive and happier at home… I didn’t lose 3 1/2 hrs of time sitting in soul sucking Bay Area traffic and I was able to balance work and personal life. Now I hate my job, I have no personal life anymore and by Friday I’m exhausted and don’t have the energy to do anything. I go to the office and do the same damn thing that I was doing at home, except I have to deal with obnoxious loud people and constant distractions from colleagues. Also, tolls and the cost of gas and millions of cars just idling in traffic… so much for the bs of saving the planet, what a joke.
Its not about lazy, its about as a manager how can you gauge how much effort your workers are working.
Increase productivity? What a joke? Nothing gets done
Absolutely, I managed 47 employees, of which half were allowed to telecommute. Most did not do their work and were often out playing around instead of working.
@@wirepaladin4317hire better employees.
@@wirepaladin4317 That speaks to your lack of management if half your staff isn’t working. Why aren’t you having weekly check ins with deliverables? Blame yourself.
you have obviously hired nobody in your life@@AznAnarchy99
Save enviroment, save gas, and less traffic. Work from home!!
They don't give a F about that. It's about getting you to spend money in the city because they drove away businesses.
Some jobs maybe, but city workers should be working during the week.
I’m a teacher can you tell my school board that?
And get nothing done without oversight!
Employer could save money too by hiring people from India in india for way cheaper, saving themselves all the taxes they are subjected to in california
I loved working at home. I didn’t miss the commute at all. I avoided gossipy, backstabbing coworkers. I still got my job done. Wins all around.
Amen! So much better for the environment and for work life balance. Also better for kids to have their parents at home. And saves money from being able to cook meals at home!
I was oppposed to WFH. But you won me over with not dealing with shithead coworkers.
But maybe you should be doing your job instead of malingering at home. Most of the employees I allowed to work at home, failed to complete work as required and I found them at the movies, amusement parks, bars etc.
i , me , i , meme , what about the people , nothing gets done
@@wirepaladin4317maybe you should of hired better employees then, if you can’t get better employees, offer more pay in return for a stronger selection. My work is fully remote and we never had an issue of someone not pulling their weight
Everything is done online. Nobody has time to take time off in the middle of the day to drive 30 minutes and wait another hour. Instead do it online and on the phone you could be doing other things. Before zoom, it meetings would take up the whole day because you have to drive to a location. Now we could have back to back meetings or even two meetings at once. Productivity is through the roof.
Wrong.
Ok so the real issue is that when you have public officials you you need the space and people to be accessible and open and available to the public. Staying at home on your computer isn’t open or accessible. Not every individual can use the internet. So expecting people to be able to call them up is asinine. This is a user Putin of the public trust and dereliction of duty.
A few need to be in person. Most don't.
I can’t believe they had the exec assistant speak to the media about this issue. They are certainly a mess.
Retention is high no wonder. They are getting paid to stay at home 😂
Let them stay home it cost millions to run offices
But they are not doing there jobs!!!
Except these are PUBLIC SERVANT offices
@@junior1497 Most of the work of serving the public is not done at a window.
@@AtomicBuffalo no but you’re supposed to be available for the public
@@junior1497 No, public employees are supposed to do the work they were hired to do, not line up when randos feel like inspecting the troops.
If city council members don't keep office hours or take appointments, vote them out. Don't conflate that with people who work desk jobs or work in the field.
pandemic freaked everyone out. Especially "essential workers" its giving special privilages . Get over it already like the rest of us
Ez $ not fear of pandemics, be real. 😂 1200 ppl, no wonder nothing gets done in Oakland.
Working from home allows workers to binge watch their favorite Netflix shows.
I go to the grocery store or gym too.
It also allows you to do your job and then spend your off time with family. Staying late also isn’t a problem as if I have to stay to 7 to get something done, I don’t mind doing it at home as I can chill right after, at the office if I stay to 7, I don’t see my front door till 9. And I’ll just not stay lol
It is so misleading to say that they need to come BACK to work. They ARE working. The rest is geography. You guys reported this with a clear bias in your reporting. Staffing to workload demands have more to do with slow government but you ignored that completely.
You just want to collect a easy paycheck without doing the work you were hired for… let’s be real I think you just showed your own biases
@@jayski7106 why must anyone collect hard paycheck if you get the job done all the same while saving the environment and traffic in the city? Let me guess, you are too old to adapt.
@@RomanticPopPunk You’re a very ignorant person assuming that I’m “Too old to adapt”. I’m a millennial that chose a career in my own town. I didn’t apply to be a public servant in a different city then complain when I have to commute to work….
@jayski7106 lmao so you are gate keeping.
Oh noes. The crummy, overpriced sandwich shops downtown are missing their captive customer base. Well all those work from home people are STILL buying food from somebody. What about those businesses?
No wonder Oakland is broken.
A city run by entitled, spoiled brat women.
Watching this is like having that person STILL wearing a mask in public or private try to explain reality and their logic of why they wear a mask to normal and sane people.😷🐑
Well then they should get a job that doesn’t require direct contact with the public ! Taxpayers pay for services not empty offices .
Should have been back two years ago. Whining state workers!
The pandemic isn't gone. Every time I think of being less careful, I find out someone I know (they had the vaccine) got covid, sometimes twice. It's weird city offices being empty and closed and functioning less.
The pandemic is over. Get over it.
It is no longer a pandemic, genius.
Why make them come back to the office if they are being productive at home? So that they can contribute to the smog on the freeway? Become mentally fatigued battling congestion? Spend hours a week not working and not helping their families because they’re sitting in traffic?
Convert the empty office space into something else. I’m tired of too big to fail so let’s flog the plebeians into doing something to prevent a collapse. Something that really doesn’t benefit them.
You obviously didn’t listen to the segment. These are public officials. This is a public office. They need to be available and open to the public at least in office ours. The last few minutes of this segment explain exactly the issue here.
@@pasta9368 I heard a reporter lamenting that she couldn't just interrupt a city council member on a whim and had to check office hours. Show up during office hours or make an appointment like the rest of us. I heard permit processing was delayed, which is normal everywhere and has diddly to do with window staff.
What about county and city workers
The problem is that the pandemic gave americans their first small taste of freedom from the endless grind. And finding that most of that was unneccessary. Look at it from a human perpective instead of a business one.
Working from home has kept so many of us healthy, with better work life balance, and we can still get the job done just as well. I have a more quiet workspace without coworkers talking or wanting to take long lunches.
It's not for everyone though - so Any employees working from home who aren't working at the same rate should be required to go in the office (especially in public service).
Not everyone has that luxury. Totally ignorant
Makes me hate small businesses
lay off the meth
2018 has to work in office, says nothing.
2024 has to work in office, cries like a baby.
Rather than come in for my in-person driver's license renewal, I was given an automatic renewal because the local offices were closed. Renewing my passport could be done 100% by mail once I sent in the photo, old passport, and filing fee. As an IT person, I HAVE TO BE IN THE OFFICE to crawl around the non-functioning servers to fix them. But software updates can be automated and is already.
Just fire them and hire new people.
This is ridiculous, our taxes is paying for this and we don’t get nothing out of this..
Retention is high because your getting paid to do nothing. How bout i pay just 25% of my taxes since I'm not getting services. Noelle Gaello again, what a joke of a city leader.
Workers have been spoiled from working at home. They'll cry like crazy if they have to go back to the office.
I’ve been working remote since the beginning of 2019 and it’s been great. I go in office 1 day a week (by choice) 🤷🏾♀️
Modesto and Sacramento too! No members in the offices at all!! Applied for permits and never got a response!!
Most administrative work doesn't require human contact. It's done behind a computer screen or on literal paper. This is a failure at monitoring employees...more virtual work actually means happier workers, better familiy lives, Productivity should actually increase by far, if it isn't, then it's lack of monitoring employees, lack of vitual assistants to answer the phone call she mentioned at the end and connect them to a board member virtually, wherever they are. I mean, we can call our doctors and be connected to them anywhere in the world...why not here...the difference between private practice wuth resources and public works that lack proper technology and resources.
AI can take over them then. Lay them off
Just because you're antisocial, don't assume everyone else is.
@@legacyjeetkunedo492 Just because you like being with people doesn't mean people should be forced to be with you.
This chronic laziness is affecting employee health too. Just look at before and after photos of them after being at home with their fridge all day for years.
And let’s talk about how a city employee is forced to walk through a DANGEROUS CITY. My husband has been threatened, physically assaulted, and there is NOTHING the police can do about it because the homeless are protected.
"Efficiency" and "Oakland" in one sentence 🤣
so if they can't even show up for 2 days a week they should be fired
Let me get a government job. I'll gladly show up to the office. Worked all through COVID going into peoples homes. Tested positive 3 times still doing the same job.
Long Covid gave me an autoimmune disease that left me disabled. My life sucks now, all for a job that could have been done COMPLETELY remotely but my abusive bosses made me come in to micromanage me. Let people work from home!!!!
Dude. At least you had work. I wish some of you experienced the lay off.
And honestly I don't believe. When you truly lose everything because of the stupid covid policies you would think different. Also you could of quit.if you wanted to.
🎻
SJ has 2x population as Oakland but same number of employees?! Time to lay off the do nothing Oakland employees!
It's not safe, is the city going to pay for theft and vandalism?
SEIU is of course happy, they have to work less than what they did before which is not much.
They should have been two years ago like the rest of us 🤨
They should stay home! We don’t want to deal with the traffic!!!
There NOTHING wrong with working from home if the same amount of work is getting done. Either HONESTLY represent the issue of shut the hell up.
Union employees are the worst, I know, I was one of them.
Speak for yourself if you were a subpar and mediocre employee.
@@bessycorrales6405 I hate dealing with union employees. Most are old and lazy. They tend to have a little to no education and they’re stuck in hourly jobs that they hate.
@@marriejames01Generalizations of the education levels and ages of employees under union contracts is ignorant. Generalizations of groups of people is ignorant. Perhaps spend some of your time educating yourself, instead of making uneducated guesses.
I have worked for the City of Los Angeles for decades and government workers have to realize that working from home is convenient, but does not serve the public. The people of California could eliminate working from home using a ballot initiative.
when organized union public support working at home is bad policy for everyone else.
They've been out to Lunch!
With DAs releasing and granting l000w bail, everyone should have the option to work rem0te.
Recall London!
Wear a MASK LIKE COPS DO!!
Lazy state and city employees who are being paid to stay at home hmm maybe its time to reduce their pay check for them to feel the pain 😂
They all need to go back to the office!
I manage a small group in city government and we issue permits. We were fully remote in the beginning and slowly got to working 3x a week at the office. Coming to the office makes no difference in productivity for my group. I believe some of the older managers like in person because they are hopeless with technology. They want to stay relevant so they come to the office.
😢
Lol i "worked from home" during the pandemic and all i did was log on and get paid while i went into another room to watch TV. No real work gets done... its just an excuse to work less with less supervision.
But at work I just sit on my phone all day while paying more gas for no reason.
You were a bad employee with a bad manager.
@@AtomicBuffalo Yes, just like everyone else working from home. People are naturally lazy. You give an inch and they take a mile.
@@shiftmove371 Thieves think everybody's trying to steal from them.
Lazy entitled public servants what do you expect 🤷♂️
Real journalism I'm liking this 😂
Laziness! everyone is out playing golf!

Interesting news!
Nonsense. If someone was to follow government employees living their daily lives; not one would be masking and staying away from public forum. Get back into the office. We the tax payers and your employers demand in-person services to meet our needs!
Using pandemic excuse long after its basically over.
Side defects. My guess.
*they want to work remotely huh? Replace them with someone cheap from other country with remote work like so many other company are doing right now. Be careful what you wish for.* 🤣
its my life goal to get a nice cozy government job, so I don't have to do anything.
California governor. It’s running this beautiful state to the ground. I truly don’t understand why she’s doing that because all his businesses are thriving making money like his venues in Napa and his restaurant not including his friend from Pandera bread.
🤣🤣 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️
what a joke. fire these people and hire those who want to work. none of them are competent or able to work from home. all i get when i call is hear a tv set blaring or crying child in the background if they even answer the phone or return emails.
A few things need an in-person presence. Most don't.
And while we're at it, how many in-person things would be more conveniently done outside "business" hours? Consider shifting "window" hours to serve both sides of the window.
Let’s keep it simple here, folks!!!
Once our city governments request full-time attendance !!!
If employees do not want come into the office!!! After the third warning you’re fired!!!
Sorry folks the simple answer is your fired. You gotta come into work. You gotta get your job done working as a team for the people paid by the people.
It's okay to say it, LAZY
What a bunch of babies
1:58 What do you mean "the pandemic is gone...done"?
There are currently (this week!) something like 400,000-500,000 new Covid infections per DAY in this country, and we are currently in the lull that is the lowest point for probably all of 2024.
The numbers are already starting to turn and rise, and they're going to keep rising probably for the rest of the year as we head back toward our summer, and fall/winter waves.
How can you call that "gone", or "done"? 🤔
😂😂😂 purely bushit wow free money for public employees anybody can do that job 😂😂😂
