    The fact that if you search up Rasputin on google you find that he looks exactly the same as he does here, and the way he died in the movie was how he really died irl is just amazing. It shows how much effort and detail the writers put in to make it not only interesting but believable and accurate.

    So, on the subject of Alexei, he had hemophilia which meant he tended to bruise easily and bleed profusely when hurt. Rasputin actually had a good track record with these attacks, not through any magical powers but by calming Alexandria, which in turn would help Alexei stay calm but also telling her not to let the doctors give him aspirin. Yes, that's right, the doctors were giving a hemophiliac a blood thinner. It's one of those weird instances where the right advice was given but without understanding why it was working.

    • @Wustenfuchs109
      @Wustenfuchs109 3 ปีที่แล้ว +439

      To be fair, aspirin was a "cure-all", panacea of it's time. It was newly invented (less than 20 years in mass production) and, as a mild medicine, had some good properties. The problem was not only that they gave it to Alexei, but they gave it to everyone - bigger the problem, bigger the dose. And that resulted in quite a few needless deaths in those early days. Especially during the Spanish Flu. Doctors didn't know what exactly to do, how to help, so in many cases they were giving huge doses of aspirin to patients.
      It did not work. Surprise.
      As you said, it is strange when good advice is given but without the actual knowledge of why it is good.

      Interesting fact: there is a good deal of evidence that suggests that Rasputin was, in fact, not actually evil. Uneducated, unwashed, unsanctioned by the church but deeply spiritual, he fell into an advisory role for Tzar and his wife. A Role he did his best to fill with what wisdom he had. This, of course, did not sit well with aristocracy or the church, so they made moves to remove him. And the press, only just getting used to having freedom, painted him as black as they could because that's what the data they had said. Better standards of journalism could have done so much to change what befell the man.
      But. There are a few . . . less savory notes, and it's unclear if those are real or if they're just a side effect of his hideous reputation + hard feelings from old flames/jealousy of the mass/the desire to be famous at all costs.

    I'm torn between this really badass portrayal of the "mad monk" and the fact that the historical Rasputin was actually a peace-loving man who was trying to prevent the World war. A man who Hollywood continuously slanders.

    • @darklord884
      @darklord884 3 ปีที่แล้ว +193

      His 'peace-loving' was kind of because his position essentially depended on the mood the tzar's wife was in, so because she supported peace, of course Rasputin agreed with her. True, the song isn't factual in that he wasn't her "lover" but he did fairly weird things with women, like inviting them to his bed but then essentially casting out the ones who actually accepted his advances, saying it was sinful.
      He is a fairly interesting pseudo-religious figure considering what he preached and the way he behaved and while I do agree that this fantastical badass won't be anything like the historical Rasputin, I don't think it's trying to be. It's not saying Rasputin was actually like this (the King's Men franchise has a habit of making famous figures like Obama and Trump look like mass murderers and overall shitty people for example), it's more an excuse to create an interesting, zany villain to set this movie at the turn of the century. From the looks of it, historical accuracy or no, it will be badass.
      This Rasputin has that air around him, just based off of the trailer. Just seeing a few seconds of how he interacts with characters and how he fights reveals this guy oozes confidence and has his way with people. Quite unlike the real 'mad monk' but he'll most likely be an entertaining villain on the level of Valentine and Poppy.

      @raultoichoa1574 3 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      @@darklord884 I think you're misreading my feelings towards it. I'm not upset. I've said he looks like a really interesting character in this, I'm just commenting that the way they make him villianous is the same take dozens of other movies have had on him. This in itself would be fine, but when everyone has the same take and the take is explicitly counter to the historical person, then it becomes interesting to me.
      Anyway, obviously it would be impossible for me to prove that in every single movie he is a bad guy, unless I watched every single movie. I have a life so that's not going to happen and asking "how do I know" is pretty unreasonable.
      What Is obvious to most people is that in most of the big hollywood movies he appears in, he is a really over the top villian. It makes me laugh especially because it usually shows a complete lack of interest in the character on the part of the filmmakers. Still over the top villians can be fun to watch, I'm just saying its been done before. A lot.
