+Amy Kelly Do you hear the kids singing backup? They were local school boys that Johnny recruited and rehearsed for this one performance. Very typical Cash and an experience I bet those kids have never forgotten.

Johnny Cash’s music transcends time!! This song is even more meaningful today (in July 2020) given everything that is going on in America at the moment. Johnny did not just have musical talent - he was a man whose choice of songs/words was visionary- his depth, sensitivity and creative courage is sorely missed and is so needed in 2020!

On April 4, 50 years ago, #MartinLutherKing was killed. When I think of him, his actions and his words, the first thing that comes to mind is that he was a prophet in the biblical sense of the term.
His fight against all discrimination, inequality and poverty was inspired by the Gospel and I think that every Christian, who cares about social problems, must see in him a model and a source of inspiration.

Johnny Cash was universal. The older he become, the more liberal he became. He opposed all war and violence, he loved Jimmy Carter and was friends with Al Gore. He loved Dixie and the south, but he always claimed to equally love New York, California and Jamaica. He played for the prisoners, but he did many police benefits, too. He was an ordained Baptist minister, but he felt Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, and Hindus were just as right as he was with their own philosphies.

The backing here is by Bill Walker and the Orchestra. The videos from this show receive occasional comments that basically say that the arrangements are too pop and not enough country. It's a legitimate criticism in my view, but I don't think it was forced on J. Cash. Johnny employed Bill Walker & crew for his weekly show (1969-1971) and for many specials and Christmas shows after that. It appears to be his choice.

Add Johnny Cash singing it, with his style, his emotion, his faith, and it's bound to touch your heart, across all boundaries! Thanks for sharing! - And if you are a Christian check out II Chronicles 7:14. There you find the answer to this song!

  • @MostlyBrenda

I usually post when a video reaches 100K. So what to say about this one? This performance, in Dec 1984, is well before Kris recorded it in July 1986. I assume that he was performing it in 1984 because Johnny knew it already. It was released in October 86 on the Repossessed album and as a single in Feb 1987. The single reached #60 on the country charts, I think. I believe the song evolved over this time period, so, if you heard him live, you may notice differences in the lyrics between the live and recorded versions.
