    Your LBL (Large Block Logo) are from around 1924-1940. Your one with the ribbed handle is probably from a left over mold when Griswold made their slant logos. I have a collection of the slants and one #8 has the rib and the others were more smooth/molded handles and I believe the rib may also be a left over from the Erie's. Your SBL according to my chart (they all very a bit) are from 1939-1957 with 3 handle variations. There is the "early" handle which has a more pointed hanger handle. Then the more rounded handle is called the "late" handle which I believe is after Wagner bought Griswold. Then there is the "late grooved" handle which is the last of the Griswolds.

    My favorite cast iron skillet is an old Griswold I got at a yard sale many years ago for $1.00. I had no knowledge of cast iron at the time. I really like that skillet, it's a gem. Lighter than my other CI. I'd love to find a Griswold waffle maker. That would be fun. Thank you for showing us your cast iron pieces and explaining your cast iron storage wall.

    I just recently picked up (sold both) a Griswold #6 & #7 Large Block Logo Skillets and both were the regular handle, not the fluted handle which one doesn't see too often. I still have another #6 Griswold soaking in lye! I believe the grooved handle seen on the small logo skillets was one of the last handles they produced before being sold to an investor that sold them to Wagner Ware. Good info on your wall. I have been thinking of a way to display my pieces which are no where near as numerous as yours because I tend to sell mine! lol That said, it sounds like that is a project for a contractor to do! When you started talking about studs and screws, my head started to spin! 😜 Anyway, thanks for the video. I love the Biblical verses at the end as well. 🙏

    I discovered a Griswold Dutch oven in my basement. Not sure where I got it but I’m sure it was either bought or inherited by my parents. I was born in ‘56, so I know I didn’t buy a Griswold. It is in pretty good shape, it’s pretty light and the cooking surface is pretty smooth. Appears well seasoned and well used. After watching this video and learning a little terminology I can describe as: Small block #8, no fire ring, fluted handle with “8” on top, nothing cast into the ‘triangle’ on the bottom of the handle. The skillet has 777A and NO. 8 on the bottom and a small GRISWOLD logo. The lid is somewhat domed with three concentric rings on the inside and is stamped 1098C. The two spots where the handle attach to the lid are hexagonal. It is just over 10” at the rim and holds exactly 4 quarts. Is this what they called a ‘chicken skillet’ ? I’d love to know a little more about it. It is perfect for baking bread and will stay upstairs in my regular rotation!

    • @castIroncookware
      @castIroncookware  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Dutch ovens will usually have a wire handle. The chicken fryers will be about the same size but not quite as deep and they will have a handle. Basically the same thing as a skillet with tall sides along with the lid.

    Just watched 1 of your video's that came across my google news. I'm always looking for cooking, seasoning, care on cast iron cookware. I received my 1st skillet (12") a few months ago from my wife because she knew I was going to start cooking with them instead of the other cookware I have. She knew I grew up with my grandfather using them always and I wanted to finally start myself. The point of this comment was that I have been watching dozens and dozens of video on everything pertaining to cast iron cookware and in the 1st one I just watched of yours you ended with scripture and that took me by surprise. I thought to myself, hmmm, I wonder if he does that in all of his video's? I went to your TH-cam page to see if it was just a random or if you are a brother in Christ so I watched this one and was waiting till the end (didn't skip anything) and when you went into scripture again that is when I subscribed. Thank you for not being fearful of the word of God because that is why I subscribed...I don't subscribe to just anything.
    May God bestow His grace, peace and mercy upon you and your family. God bless

      Wow. Would you like to sell some?.
      I am new at this and just spent the last month doing research on cast iron. Come to the conclusion that I like the Griswold big block best. 15 years ago I bought a Lodge but didn't understand cast iron the slightest bit, so I got rid of it. This year I wanted to get away from teflon pans and so I thought I would try iron again. I wanted something something smoother, so I bought a Paderno 12 on sale for 70% off. (That was the only reason I bought it.) Then I spent near 3 weeks of every day seasoning and re-seasoning a few times because it would flake off and learning about the different oils and experimenting. Needless to say, the utilities bill was high that month haha. But now more experienced and educated, I would like to go vintage. And smaller.

That's like someone having a car repair channel, to teach people, that doesn't know the difference between a carburetor and a fuel pump, and thinks the terms are interchangeable. A pattern and a mold are NOT the same thing; the terms are NOT interchangeable, and someone that has a cast iron TH-cam channel should at least know the very BASICS of the casting process and terms.
