I saw the price tag on the title card and thought "I wonder what else came in the box to justify the cost?" Turns out, nothing!

We are very sorry for the inconvenience.
Unfortunately, this kind of data hasn't been squeezed so far. I don't know.

Thank you. That was something I had intended to put in and it slipped my mind.

It's unfortunate that chinese and it's derivative writing systems were not conducive to proper display through such limited hardware. The only solution I could think of would be some kind of on-board character bank within the console itself. Still expensive, sure, but way more efficient.
If you only store the most ## characters while allowing software to handle the rest as needed, the only practical downside would be that every game uses the same font, but plenty of computers had that limitation.

There were actually graphical character sets that were sold for use on this kind of limited hardware and some 80's computers had special kanji plug-ins. The history of trying to get Japanese and Chinese characters to work on computers is fascinating.

Konami actually made a peripheral for Famicom called QTa adapter. It was a cartridge which plugged into Famicom and had a slot on its top for software made for use with QTa adapter. The cartridge contained some onboard data, including 128KB of kanji graphics. Konami made several education software cartridges for use in schools which would take data from the adapter instead of carrying it inside each cartridge. Everything related to QTa adapter is extremely rare and half of its software remains undiscovered by rom dumpers.

Several Chinese bootlegs actually have ways of storing the characters.

Pretty low bar to call it homophobia.

    that homophobia is really unfortunate

Eh, as someone who was alive in the 90's, who's very familiar with the norms of console games of the era, and who is very definitely LGBT, I thought it was relatively progressive for the time that a game even acknowledged that homosexuality could be a thing.

@@EriChanTheRetroGamerNerd especially since the game says "we don't know how to calculate this" rather than "that's gross/illegal/immoral"

@@stevep9177 Going back over it, I get the sense that "We don't know how to process this data" was Japanese politeness for "Look, I wish we could program this in, but I'd lose my job if I did."

may have heard of this one randomly browsing NES/FC roms but never looked into this one. massive yikes on the homophobia but suppose there was still the stigma back then. :( so yeah probably not anywhere on my hitlist for famicom stuff.
