In his book “21 lessons for the 21st century” Harari wrote about terrorism and the fact that the fear of it is far more dangerous than the actual impact. The media is a huge part of this.

People like Harari who have spent their whole lives studying and practicing mindfulness to understand the world should have the most power. Problem is, the pursuit of power and knowledge are two seperate things that rarely occur together in a human being.

I think this is mostly an American phenomenon.
Where I live in Britain, mass shootings are comparatively unheard of. (Because guns, obviously.) The last time we had anything like this was probably the Manchester suicide bombing of 2017, which killed 27 people. Back then, there was much discussion of who the victims (many of them children) were. The killer was discussed to, but more his motivations than his identity, and only for pragmatic reasons as a way into debating how best to deradicalise similar people to prevent further killings.

I never wanted to see the video of a killer bragging about killing, whether it's a teenage high school shooter, a white nationalist, or Islamic terrorist and judging by the response of the audience and people in the comments neither did they.
It's amazing that news organisations have not already implemented a policy like this themselves voluntarily, it shouldn't take a campaign of complaining to the new organisation and their advertisers for them to do the decent thing.

Not every mass shooter is wanting to become famous and that is their main motivation. A lot of people are very violent and their families try to get them help. I think those families benefit from seeing in the news shootings because they are concerned their loved one can potentially do that someday. He did bring up some good points and if it works statistically then I would support it.
Also, I am going to college to work in Criminal Psychology. I watch true crime documentaries to remind myself of why I am sacrificing so much for this field. That isn't a bad thing those exist. Studying the psychology of why humans do what they do is natural and cannot be abolished.

I do not endorse the undeniably inapropriate and sickening manner in which the media portrays mass shooters, yet no matter how much I try, I feel as if it cannot be the case that most mass murderers seek notoriety above all else. To put this another way, I think unless we are talking about very specific individuals and their personalities (whether they suffered from particular mental illnesses and personality traits or a combination of several such illnesses and traits that gave rise to these "notoriety seeking" desires), it cannot be claimed that most people commit such horrible acts of violence due to a strong desire to be famous. Fame has its appeal, do not get me wrong; especially for those who have been neglected while growing up or worse, been the center of attention in a negative light (the question that which is worse is more or less debatable) resulting in their developing psychological complexes and vigorously evil obsessions regarding "notoriety". Yet, most of these shooters, I'd reckon, do not commit such acts to become famous. They may view fame as a strangely exciting by-product of their plans; the way society is "finally" going to know who they are, but they do not derive the main motive power from these thoughts. I think it takes a very special person (purely technically speaking) to commit such terrible crimes solely, or even mostly, based on the desire for fame, while these people are rarely "special" in that regard. These are, by my estimation, more or less normal people, and if we want to stop this nightmare from happening, we might do well to take very real concepts of depression, anxiety, and particularly "simple" (as they are generally viewed) phenomena such as school bullying (a phenomena that, in my opinion, no part of which is in any manner "simple") or abuse (mental or physical) as well as suicide absolutely seriously. Remember, it only takes one kid (or adult, for that matter) to be fed up with this world, its vicious treatment of them and its diabolical unfairness to pull the trigger. And some of those triggers are not pulled on their own heads only.

People writ large don't know what they want. You can cite as many surveys as you want, the fact of the matter is that while "people SAY they want to see less coverage of shootings", "more positive news", or anything else, the news media publishes what gets read... and that's what gets read. If you want the news to report with a conscience, the answer is to remove the profit motive out of the equation, not to write to their CEOs.

I did research on mass shooters for my book: "The Conscience of An Agnostic," which is listed on Amazon. A number of these shooters gave clear warning signs. For example, Nikolas Cruz, the Parkland shooter, had depression, autism, and ADHD. He had been transferred six times in high school. He was like the hot potato that nobody wanted to touch. They knew that this kid was a mess. Same thing with the Columbine duo, the Virginia Tech killer, and the Sandy hook killer. So what's up with our mental health professionals?

always think twice before you decide to screw with someone. That goes for individual's and the powers that be. we were all dragged into this world, lets try and get along. Lets hope peace prevails, but i honestly don't think humanity can do that. too many people love power and control, and sometimes that backfires (no pun intended).

I agree with the man but here's the problem: we did not get here by accident. Media, did not get to this point by accident. People don't really care about being informed, they care about being apprised of what they consider to be important. What they consider to be important, is what they react to most strongly. And everybody reacts more strongly to bad news than to good news.
The reason that media puts out the most sensational stories in the most provoking way possible, is because it sells. The reason few large media outlets bother with anything else, is that those who tried simply got outcompeted. The customer demanded violence and death. The customer got what they wanted. It's the basic underlying psychology of people, the deviant is always more interesting than the normal. A shooting happens, people don't ask "Which completely normal/average person got killed?", they ask "Who's the crackpot with the gun, why did he do it, and did they get him?" We have nobody but ourselves to blame for what the media does.
So if, in a hypothetical case, current media companies were to change their ways and change the subject they'd report, the same thing would happen as it did before. Somebody else will report it instead, and whomever does first will draw the largest crowd because people will always seek the abject experience of touching the underlying horror.

I would like to think this will work, and it is worth the effort. However, I fear the media has become the lap dog of the government, and the thirst for power and control is fed by these horrendous incidents. As powerful an incentive as money is, there are more powerful motivators for those with no conscience.

There's no single unifying cause that can be easily found or addressed and this is not proposed as a panacea to end all mass shootings.
