UPDATE: I forgot to add that if you choose to brush micas onto baked clay and want a really rich color, it's best to do so by first brushing mod podge, Tack It, or polycrylic onto your piece to secure the mica color.

Today I will be going over 5 different ways to color your polymer clay. Take note that you can definitely use other things to color your clay than what I will be going over here, these are just a few ways that I found and are also fairly simple to do.

Thanks for sharing this with us. Coloured clay has been difficult to get but I tried a couple of eays to make a deep but bright hue of purple but couldn't find out why it came out dull and more wine colored. I appreciate that it will help me to save money by making my own. THANK YOU!💙💛💚😊👍🌟

You can also add any kind of shimmery nail powder, not glitter, glitter is too 3-D, but you can use really fine dust they use for the chromatic nails. You ALSO believe it or not-can mix acrylic paint into it too. Just make sure it’s not wet wet when you’re done but resembles clay consistency
Mica powders and nail powders are one in the same. Also, I cover acrylic paints in the video as well 🫶

Super helpful video! I’m just starting with polymer clay (as in, I just received my first brick of Sculpey yesterday), and I already have 90+ bottles of alcohol ink. When using either the dye or acrylic, you say to let it dry (acrylic about 5 days), (ink about 3 or 4 hours) - what about working with it? If I try to work with either right after, will it leach onto my hands? Can’t feature sculpting with gloves. Hope you see this. 😊
When I was younger I did a similar thing were I mixed markers with prestic.
My favorite are all of them LOL!!

Hi! For the alcohol inks, after its evaporated and youve baked it, lets say for jewelry, do you need to seal the clay or would it be fine on its own?
Have you tried the iridescent powder on top of the alcohol ink??

I was just wondering the same. I would guess that spraying the finished piece with UV protection would keep the color from fading. But that’s pure speculation on my part! 🤞🏻
Can you mix patina paint with polymer clay?
Are pastels colorfast once they get into the clay? I'd like to be to color stuff without it starting to look weird after a fed months.

My experience so far with coloring clay has been very positive. I have yet to experience any fading or bleeding. Though if your piece is exposed to direct sun light for a prolonged period of time, there will definitely be some fading.

Yes, as far as I am aware you certainly can though I have never personally done it 💜
btw, after using pastels or crayons on your clay do you varnish your sculptures?
I've used clay right after I put paint into it without a problem.
What about oil paint instead of acrylic? Would it still need to leave it?
Also what about scraping dry water colour paints the same technique as the pastel?

For the ones you didn’t use alcohol ink on, to soften it, can you just add alcohol? I’ve never done any of this before but am wanting to try 😁
I think if you're looking to just soften the clay to make it easier to work with, it would be much better to use a drop of baby oil or clay softener.

Can I use oil pastel?
Do you happen to know if used chameleon micas would the color shift still come through? Would you need to base you clay black first?
The color shift will absolutely come through and you definitely don't have to have a base. Just lightly brush it onto raw clay and it should show up beautifully.

Could you also place the clay with acrylic paint, on a piece of paper to try to dry it out as well? Just out of curiosity.
Also if you paint the baked clay how long should you wait before epoxy?

Hey love I have a question if you use acrylic paint or food coloring do you still have to wait a week for it to dry? if you making sprinkles for your slime coz you not making clay sculptures
I would not recommend using food coloring with polymer clay as it does contain sugar and that can hinder the curing process. And yes, when using acrylic paint to color clay, you should still wait a week for all the water to evaporate from your clay before baking no matter what you plan to use your sprinkles for. I have a question please, isn't using acrylic paint a little bit dangerous? I mean later on doesn't it dry even while shaping it even before using the oven? And even after doesn't it have some cracks in it ?
I wonder if you just put the paint on top of the clay and let it dry before neading it, so the water evaporated; could you use it right away????
It would probably take a lot longer to get to the desired color that way of at all. But give it a go. I'd be interested to hear what you discover. 💜
What brand of translucent clay are you using? It looks nice and firm

What if you melt the crayon to liquid form before mixing it in?
I personally haven't tried that but I would say give it a go. And if you do try it and it works, please let me know 💜
Have you tried painting the acrylic paint onto a flattened piece of the clay and letting it dry, then knead it into the clay? Just a thought, I haven't tried it yet, but it makes sense.
Also, I just got 4 colors of chameleon color shifting acrylics I can't wait to try it with!

I added acrylic paint to my polymer clay and it started getting really chalky. No matter the amount, or color, or brand, the clay all become chalky and dry. I used Mont Marte acrylic paint and polymer clay.
Which brand of clay did you use

Mica is pronounced MEEK-UH not mike-ah. What it is is pure pigment, mica is in most cosmetics, or really most things with color. love your video- would like to see how shading skin would look with mica (blushing, shading in crevices etc)

Great video. Thanks. 👍🙂 My only criticism is that you probably really only needed two drops of the alcohol ink because the rest was just wasted on your gloves! If people used these things SPARINGLY the World would be a much better place!
