With the sprung buffers, and how poor those tension locks are, this seems to be the perfect model for using proper 3 links! Thanks as always Sam.
Yeah true - would have been nice to have seen some 3 links included!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@@SamsTrains Being a brown vehicle they should have screw link couplings.
for added realism simply take the roof off. leave a bit of kipper inside the van, screw the roof back on again and hey presto ........ leave at least 3 months and pop on the radiator if it hasn't started to work. I left mine in for 6 months but then my girlfriend left me too. Women hey?
I've noticed an important aspect of Sam's Trains Reviews. Three things will raise the ratings -
1. Sprung Buffers
2. Sprung Buffers
3. Sprung Buffers. I kid you because I like your reviews so much. Thanks, Sam - another HONEST review!
Kernow has really improved on their EFE Rail range. Their new GWR Bloater fish vans are pretty good models. They are basic but they function pretty well and they are reasonably priced. Of course, Kernow has a few things which they need to improve but they are pretty well Sam.
They really have with new offerings like this - really pleased with them!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I love your channel mate. Its so real and honest. Ive been a train enthusiast all my life (mainly diesels) but i do love steam engines to such beautiful engineering. Keep the videos coming mate always eagerly await your next upload.
One thing that is missing on all model wagons used for use in mixed rakes is the chalk marks used to identify destinations of the current load. This would be best served with a sheet of glued back stickies with various destinations in random fonts (scribble). Sheets either by region, yards used, load types, manufacturer, etc. Video of hump yards show a clerk making lists of wagons from these marks before shunting over the hump into trains for these destinations.(before TOPS). It is possible to get graffiti to stick to your wagons so chalk marks should be easy?
Great video as always. Just wondering if it would be more realistic to manually couple wagons and locos in your videos, which is what we see on working railways today - where the couplings and vacuum hoses are manually operated. I have been reading about injuries and fatalities associated with some shunting practices (hump shunting, pole and prop shunting) and can see why shunting has to be done properly. Just an idea. But good videos as always. Looking forward to your next video.
Leave a like if Sams trains is the best TH-camr ever 🎉
haha I don't know about that!!

Yum...
Bloater...
I used to live on Shipham's Bloater paste (and Patum peperium) when I were a lad/student.
Oh and somehow kept conning the less worldly wise of fellow first year halls of residence residents into accepting my challenge to poo poo the shredded wheat advert of the time ~ that one with the memorable tag line:
"Bet you can't eat three"
So many free breakfasts and eventually they even became a bit of an event because there wasn't much to do let's face it and maybe because I went full bore and polished off a dozen at a go.
But it's now quite difficult to find many outlets selling any Shipham's pastes. Maybe it's in the name, perhaps it could do with an update. As for their Bloater paste itself, it's even less likely to be on a supermarket shelf near you anymore.
Think it suffers from the hangover of wartime austerity even now as well as the archetypal 'marmite' sensibilities of consumers. Apparently not everyone loves the fishy taste of it and anchovies even moreso.
The fools! They don't know what they're missing.
Very nice. Coupling hooks being the wrong shape is a small issue, especially when you have as many spare couplings as I do (thanks to using magnetic couplings in fixed rakes, and such).
I've had my eye on them since they were announced, but I've been into 2 model shops that sell Bachmann/EFE stuff in the last 3 weeks since the delivery of these, and neither had any (The Signal Box in Anstey, Leicestershire, and Addlestone Model Centre in Addlestone, Surrey). So I'll just have to wait until either I go to a different shop again, or I order something from another retailer online that I can tag one of these onto.
Yeah absolutely - pity they didn't work better, but I'd take this over badly drooping/dodgy kinematics!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
With the rolling stock test including running over points, and your recent review of the S100 got me thinking - would it be beneficial to also test (small) shunting locos over standard non-express points within the reviews?
I know you from somewhere
Great video Sam! I always enjoy watching your videos and reviews! And I love every thing you do! keep being awesome! ❤
Thank you so much - really appreciate your kind words my friend!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
This is a great offering. Will be sure to get some. Thanks for the review.
This is a breath of fesh air in many ways. Newly tooled, good quality and not priced at a premium. This is what all manufacturers should be aiming for so that people can get into the hobby without needing a second morgage.
Outstanding review sam
Thanks Justin! :D
The springs in the kinematic couplings are too soft. I stuck mine at the front of a long van train (these vans needed steam I believe to preserve the fish), and the weight of the train prevents the springs returning to the centre, which eventually causes other issues. I have kinematics on a lot of rolling stock, mostly coaches where I normally use Roco type couplings. But rarely between loco and the first vehicle as the springs are generally strong enough to return the coupling to the centre. Sadly not this van.
Now I could place it at the rear of the train, but then it would not be steam heated.
Otherwise a fine model except the couplings.
Very pleased with these vans too, I have a BR crimson bloater and I confirm the detail and decoration is just as good as the GWR livery reviewed. Great to see something reasonably priced, and it works because I Impulse bought one even though I little interest in modelling GWR, I was just hooked on the bargain!
Ahh excellent to hear - I think so too - just shows that models can be affordable yet still top notch!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Glad you reviewed these as I've been considering them for a while due to my love for seaside layouts. I'll have to see if I can pick one up someday.
Thanks Beaglington - absolutely awesome - would highly recommend!

The extra bits like the door handles as a part of the molding is on par with Rapido UK’s… they look great and I suspect they’ll hold up better as the years go on.
Everybody here, Hallo Sam's Trains 😊🇳🇿
Great review! I'll keep a look out for one or two- I hear they could be better than the old Peco Parkside kit too.
Very good. Thank you 🙏
In your next Sodor shunting session, you should include these two cars on Henry's train since they're like the cars he pulls with The Flying Kipper
I’m actually quite impressed by these! I didn’t preorder any due to EFE’s track record, but these actually seem like good quality, well detailed vans at reasonable prices! I’m thinking I might order some of the BR ones, as my Layout is the transition between LNER/BR so I could probably get away with these in my BR trains!!
A good review as per usual 😊🚂🚂🚂
Interesting fact the Severn tunnel junction breakdown train had one of these as a wagon up to the late 80s
Mmmm, the price is acceptable, first good thing. When you see it's the same retailer's price as a Rapido 5 planks... Looks fine, superb details, kinematic couplers, galore of details, you have your money at work here ! And sprung buffers ! Copy that, Bachmann ? (Presflo and Dance Hall anyone ?)
And dynamic qualities ? Well, old style Dapol-like couplings, if you are on Kadees like me, thats a good idea. That's a pity because everything else is OK.
So my question for me is : does I have GBP 50 this month to buy a pair of them, or shall I wait july for budgetary reasons ? Sam, you made me buy the USA tank (pending delivery, sent this evening from Kernow), you certainly can add those Bloaters to the list !
awesome sam
Hey Sam you should look at a walthers trainline or bachmann usa train set
Ur trains are awesome as always. I made a TH-cam short of a new train I got. But these look cool. I like them. Keep being awesome my friend u never disappoint
Thank you so much - that's awesome I'll check it out! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Fish!
*Loud shattering sounds.*
Poor Duck.
The other option is the model by Parkside, however by the time you have added sprung buffers, changed the wheelsets, if necessary, added suspension, or use the Masokits detailing upgrade, you are way over £30+. per model. The one thing that struck me on close ups of the couplings was the outside angle, which looks far too steep.
Hi. Good review of a nice model. Can you tell me why it’s Kernow and not EFE though? I thought EFE was an off shoot of Bachmann. Being their older toolings? Or has EFE gone solo and produced for Kernow? Doesn’t Kernow have their own boxes? Must admit though when my wagons are coupled up they stay in a rake for 20 years or so on my layout (excluding wheel cleaning). lol. Cheers. Dave
*beattie well tank flashbacks intensify*
haha a massive departure from the beattie!!

Absolutely stellar these Sam! Could well have been from a German manufacturer. Sharply moulded, excellent fit and finish, high quality everywhere. Fabulous models. Cheerio 🙂
They really are excellent aren't they? Can't praise them enough!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Those are some beautiful railway wagons. I might consider picking some up to go with my custom s160 locomotive. I mainly model American railroad operations, but I do have a soft spot for British and European locomotives and wagons. As for my s160, it’s a custom model that I’m working on making. It uses an IHC 2-8-0 chassis and mechanism, 3d printed shell and tender assemblies, and Bachmann Spectrum 2-10-0 electronics. I have already acquired the IHC 2-8-0 mechanism and I already have the 3d printed parts designed. It will be able to accept both kadee and custom NMRA-spec NEM-compatible couplers, so it will be able to work with European models. The locomotive itself is modeled after the American deployment s160s. It will be painted US Army black and yellow with a dark silver smokebox and white letters.
I'd strongly recommend these - they're well made and look great as you see! That sounds fantastic - what a great project!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)

These are brilliant i wamt this pair. I wish each version had a second number though.
They are aren't they? Yeah it's quite a limited range unfortunately - I'm sure another batch will follow with more numbers though!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I have the same 2 vans and have the same issue with the couplings. Seems a common problem across many manufacturers.
good vid nice van keep up the good vid you do on channel
Thank you! :D
So, these vans are made by Bachmann for The Kernow Railcentre? I am surprised that such a large van can only carry 10 Tons. I agree they are very nice Vans. Did I notice a small amount of warping at the ends of the van, Chassis or box? Nobody would see it unless up close.
Hopefully I can find some of these over here in the United States!”. Keep up the good work!
Good luck! Well worth it if you can find some :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Today, plenty of the "Bloaters" can still be smelled at heritage railways :P
I'll have tomlook into it, I know someone who collects fish vans.
Nice review of a nice model. I would use them with a Hall class or faster in view of the need for speed with fish ! 🤢Perishable goods were often routed as expresses.
13:08 yay the 2800 is back!! It's certainly been a while.
haha it sure has!!
Excellent review Sam
Thanks Robert!
Seems like these wagons would be perfect for a mainline/branch through train. Not as much for switching😳 beautiful wagons for a great price
Yeah definitely - for shunting I'd probably recommend swapping the couplings!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
"Yes, I'm second, yes its true."
-Venus (My Fantastic Field Trip To The Planets)
Interesting model. Question: How did they get the name "bloater?"
Actually Stuart a bloater is a type of smoked herring which is smoked as a whole fish and I’m told tastes more gamey than a kipper . Hope that helps. So there is a fish connection
@@mikewoods4177 Thank you for the answer.
Are they made by Kernow even or bacchman?
As I understand it - made by Kernow, distributed by Bachmann!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I couldn't believe what good value this wagon is. I have one in GWR Shirtbutton livery and very impressed. Great detail all rounds. Cheers
Absolutely - marvellous little piece of kit isn't it?

Sam, how much would you say your layout and ALL your locomotives combined, cost? How much is your collection worth?
haha I dread to think of the answer to that - I'm not sure!

@@SamsTrainsyou mean that it’s not insured? Uh-oh! I really would mate.
Sam, would you consider reviewing Hornby's Royal Scot train set? It's at a massive discount on Hornby's website rn
That sounds interesting - I'll look at that thank you!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
You keep mentioning Kernow ( Model Rail Central I assume) but I thought EFE were owned by Bachmann and they make the decisions about what tooling to use. So it has nothing to do with Kernow? It's not their fault for making toolings which are now out of date.
where are Sam's trains models coming out?f
If you want to "flex on" the big manufacturers, you could try sticking a 3D printed coupler in place of ones like these which don't work well out of the box and show how easy it would be to get it right.
That's a good idea for a test - I could try that, thanks!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I grew fond of the couplers on AliExpress.. all of them in fact.
They seem pretty good, but with that shiny finish they're just crying out for a touch of light weathering.
Sam could you try to make custom thomas models with your 3d printer
He might get in trouble with whoever owns the rights
I don't think there'd be a problem with making a model, as long as I wasn't trying to sell it of course!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@SamsTrains seen some people modify bachmans models and then make them prop accurate but fully making a prop accurate thomas character would be cool
I can see the Thomas fans kitbashing these for a “Flying Kipper” set-up.
That would definitely be a fun project!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Awesome video Sam's trains 😊
Thanks a lot Brian!
@@SamsTrains you're welcome Sam's trains 🚆 😊
Good to see good quality vans at mre sensible prices, but i feel that £19.95 would
have made them more desirable.
For me Dapol vans are good enough, and you can afford more of them.
I think so too - really reassuring to see! £19.95 would have been even better, but I think these are reasonable enough as they are!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Although the models are good value the shirtbutton version should have six vents fitted and the gas piping on the roof.
What about bachmann beau
I would like to look at Beau!

Nice to see a new tooled item which isn’t going to break the bank
Bachmann own EFE RAIL, they use third parties to manufacture, old or existing models.that they brought the rights to.
Heljan, kernow commissioned model's, EFE RAIL underground stock,.DJ models ETC etc.
That's right - and this project was a Kernow project, and a new tooled one!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I’ll be honest when I hear bloater I think of stomach medicine 💊 and that puffer fish 🐡 from finding nemo 🐠
Nice rolling stock, and a new Fish Van isn't to be sniffed at. Still, the mystery of the substantial weight has not been resolved. Perhaps EFE threw a chunk of tuna inside? Or, since this is probably a Chinese-made product, maybe a fat slice of Koi Carp was squeezed in? Quite handy if you get peckish on a Sunday evening running session, but Sushi fans will get jealous. If this trend continues, manufacturers will have to add a Calorie Count to their new products. Yummy...
Wow, sprung buffers! Why can’t more premium models include those?
I know!!
Sam you play Train Sim world 4?

@@SamsTrains My pleasure Sam
I think you need to see a doctor, I think you have lost the plot. You are saying that these are worth £25 each. If you compare what you are getting compared to an Accurascale Class 66 locomotive then what you are saying makes no sense at all. If you look at the workmanship, detailing, drive mechanism, gearing, wheels, pickups, drive train, detail, and you get "sprung buffers" Then on this basis Accurascale should be selling their locos for about £450. I remember when I could get a good wagon for £5 Now would be prepared to pay £10 but no more. I think its about time modellers said no to these prices, If no-one bought them then the prices would be a lot cheaper.
Absolutely spot on. Its just a joke now on pricing for rolling stock. All my Bachman wagon were between £5-7 and the larger ones maybe 10-12. The Queen Mary was about £13.50 IIRC. Just saw Accurascale offering 3x NER 20T hoppers for, wait for it...£84.95! Jeez. So just got 5x Slaters kits for £50. Does the job.If these reviewers keep saying these prices are good, it will become acceptable. A good way to see how exorbitant they are is to see the prices when stuff is in the sales and they still make some money.
I clicked on this faster than Mattel reviving hate mail
Wow! Efe did something good! Awesome video sam as always, this is something finally reasonable from efe, and possibly this is the way forward for the brand??
You haven't watched it yet lol
haha they sure did - credit where credit's due! I think this should be a good way forward for them!

I don’t see any cattle wagons on anyone’s layout these days
GWR Bloater Fish Vans? Hey, I have a T&F Troublesome Truck OC based off that particular type of wagon.
Is there really?? I hadn't heard about this!!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
EFE have been producing some great stuff recently, currently my only experience of them is some of their locomotives like the ex heljan 58 which is still quite good despite how old it is and DMUs like the 144 pacers, the bulleid booster is a favourite EFE model of mine but wouldn’t mind trying some of their rolling stock, I think the crane will be my first piece of EFE rolling stock I get.
They really have been - the range is a very mixed bag, some of it manufacturered by Heljan, but this was great!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
You said you needed better wagons
I’m of the opinion that EFE /bachmann got tired of trying to out Hornby Hornby. ‘Ornby Is dominating the occasionally older thus overpriced product market.
Yep! Really lovely to see something new! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
These are nothing to do with Kernow, Bachman own EFE rail though they have used some old Kernow DJM tooling in the past.
Nope - definitely Kernow - says it on the box! Bachmann are just distributing these models on behalf of Kernow, using the EFE rail brand
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@@SamsTrains I stand corrected, seems an odd way to go rather than use the standard black Kernow box and keeping them exclusive.

SAM!! I found a pin in my class 37, can I have it please 🥺
A pin?!?!
@@SamsTrains I saw someone do that and the TH-camr pinned their comment!!
To be honest, I don't agree that wagons have become reasonably cheap, £25 for a wagon despite all the extra features…
Sprung buffers, unless you replace the coupling with chain couplings, has no extra value since they don't touch each other with a stiff coupling, and is there by a useless feature to me.
You're not going to run around, and say to everyone, look at my spring buffers, sound as ridicules as a Monty Python movie.
I didn't say they look bad, far from, they are finished as you would expect them to be.
I think the word cheap is not in place here, in my view, but that's a feeling in general I have for all new wagon stock, I got a mixed feeling about this…
I think objectively when you compare these with other newly tooled vans, these are certainly cheaper, even if you don't agree they're cheap. Most model railway functions are useless and serve no purpose... sprung buffers included... but I do enjoy them!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@@SamsTrains I 100% agree with you, if you only compare the new tooled wagons prices, than cheap might be in place, also sinds this is a bigger wagon than a plank wagon maybe, but prices in the last 4 year have being going up in such a quick acceleration as never before and me not getting use to that, could be the problem of course.
But you know Sam, that I always appreciate your objective reviews as an independent source, and this is certainly a plus in the hobby, keep on making them…
Grossly over generous scoring! The fact they can't couple is a major flaw. I really cannot see that £25/£30 for a single freight wagon is really value for money - however detailed the item is - a realistic train length would cost approx £200+
Sam, our Wifi router has decided to act up, I'm trying my best to keep up with your videos...

You've heard of waiting forever for something? Nice vans by the way, I'm not getting them. One certain factory team are taking far too long to get Dapol Foxcote Manor released, so I asked Rails of Sheffield to cancel my pre-order (which they did) and I've now got a second Hinton Manor model. The delivery of the new Hinton Manor model was quicker, because she is still available to buy. I'm happy with what I've done. Foxcote Manor, welcome to both of my model railways.
