This is exactly why I think self-promotion is important when you are a professional athlete. In fact, I'll say that it's NEEDED. This isn't the first time Miami's police conduct has been questioned. Like you mentioned, when they were overly-aggressive with Tyreek Hill. And in this case, they pretty much beat up Kerley as well. However, Hill's superstar status is what got him out of trouble. Athletes don't want to admit it, but that's a privilege they have of being a well-known pro athlete. But in Kerley's case, since he doesn't self-promote at all, he doesn't have that privilege, despite being one of the world's best athletes.
While I say that, I also say that this could've been handled better on Kerley's part. Kerley wanted to get to his vehicle but it was parked around an active investigation, so no one can move anything until it's over. Whether it was ego or pride, Fred felt the need to try and push past the officers to get to his car and of course it escalated from there. Dude's gotta be smarter than that and be aware of the situation.

Well said. You know who never would have pushed that envelope? Noah Lyles. Say what you want but besides self-promoting he seems like he was raised right. Though no excuse it appears Fred Kerley seems like he had a Black stereotypical hard knock childhood & has not learned yet to put a lid on it. What on heaven’s made you think it was ok to push past an active investigation? Yes the cops may have over reacted but Fred picked an unnecessary fight. It was dumb. I’m sure his sponsorship has a morality clause attached.

Miami is notorious for aggresive police officers. Fred clearly got step up and took the bait like a fool. No matter the situation you are never to touch, or be that close to a police officer, they have every right to lay their hands on you when you are that close (as messed up as this sounds). Police officer can make the claim that Fred is the aggresor because he is walking very close to him, the first touch on fred's chest indicates that the police officer is creating distance, (if fred was just a tad bit cautious he wouldn't have done that, or in this case he would have put his hands up backed away). The moment you touch an officer it is an offense or an act of agression. You can see when Fred approaches the officer with the dash cam, the other police officer moves right behind him as a way to pin him between them. It's clearly a bait to arrest him and he literally took it. Do I think this whole encounter was unncessary? yes absolutely. Could it have been avoided? 1000% even if they confiscate your vehicle, you can get compensated if you are in the right with a lawyer, Fred should know better he got baited and took it like a fool. It's a shame I have to say this but you gotta be aware of your surroundings. Especially dealing with officers.

What's wrong with black athletes having to prove themselves. What you also fail to understand is that most people think track is a DIRTY SPORT (and it is--but so are other sports. However, drug use in track in more obvious than in other sports) It's been almost 40 years, but when I see a woman run a 48.03 electric 400, I remember what that felt like, and my immediate thought is: "I wonder if she's doping." Why are only 1 or 2 women able to do that? Men who ran in the 47, 48, and 49 range had hundreds of other men that could do it. It's always fishy when only a couple people can do something. Ever heard of Marita Koch or Jarmila Kratochvílová? Both drug cheats who were never caught, just like Marion Jones and Flo Jo.

Very interesting development, this. Sounds to me like Fred was a total idiot in his behaviour. Because as one of the best sprinters in the world, getting himself tazed might have an impact on his fast-twitch nervous system in his leg muscles. I hope he doesn't incur any lasting impact from it.
With regard to him not being recognised and how he was treated at the scene, and how American athletes don't generally get recognised, well that can have a lot of benefits for them because they can go about their lives without being constantly hassled. The Americans are more into American Football, Basketball and Baseball, rather than Track and Field Athletics. Over here in Europe, it's a similar story with Football (what you call Soccer) being the biggest sport. But Athletics is a bit higher in profile and we revere our athletes more because they are rarer. In England, our only Olympic champion, Keely Hodgkinson, won Sports Personality of the Year and was honoured in the New Year's Honours list as an MBE. But other than that, athletes off the track are just ordinary people, just like everyone else and that means they have to be careful.
I do agree that in this era, athletes are uniquely privileged to be able to be in full control of their own promotion through social media. It's great to see athletes like Lyles and Richardson having big followings online and all athletes should take a leaf out of their books and do likewise. This is a powerful way to break the stranglehold legacy media has on athletes' exposure and profiting from that at the athletes' expense.

NO! NO! NO! Coach Rob is totally missing the point about track and field popularity, or lack of popularity. Major track and field events are hardly ever televised or even reported. Watch the sports section of the local newspapers. Where is track and field results? I see gymnastics and horseback riding, but no track and field. Why? Because there are NO white athletes! This is all about race. So is the Boston and New York Marathon! African nations totally monopolize the sport...even women sports! If Fred Kerley was white, he would be Athlete of the Year over and over again! When white athletes are stopped for DUI, they are escorted home for their safety. Fred Kerley would NEVER get that kind of treatment. He might be banned from the sport as they did with our 1968 Olympic sprint champions for raising their fists in protest of racial discrimination in the U.S. No! They were kicked out of the Olympic village! Don't get it twisted!!!

Fred is a big guy of color. He became "at risk" when the other side involved, arrived on scene.
