I figured it out. The flat rails have railroad spikes holding them down. Since the diagonal ones are clearly not spiked down to anything while suspended in the air, the extra metal from unused spikes is forged into more rail.
If it doesn't already exist, there should be a mod or resource pack that has a 16×22 texture just for diagonal rails so there's minimal pixel stretching

Well its actually possible (with ease too) to stretch metal. You just have to heat it up. The hard part is stretching the wood without tearing it, as you cannot heat the wood up too much, or it lights fire.
A flat rail is 16 pixels long, with slips of 2 pixels and gaps of 2 pixels, but starts and ends with a gap of 1 pixel. The stretched rail which is √2 times longer, therefore has 16×√2 ≈ 22,6 pixels, rounded to 23. Make it 24, and that's 6 slips instead but will no longer look stretched. The texture can be 32×16, but it's only using 24×16.
We all know how steve can materialize stuff out of thin air or how he could carry billions of kilograms worth of mass. So it makes sense that steve stretched the metal and spaced out the wood with his sheer strength.
You can also prove this with the 45, 45, 90 rule where the legs of the triangle are both x, and the hypotenuse is x(sqrt2). In this case x=1, so the hypotenuse is 1×sqrt2. I find this quicker to do than pythagorean theorem, but i guess when x=1 its easy both ways.
Now the question is, how in the hell did Steve manage to pull the wood part of the rails HORIZONTALLY, iron I get, but wood? That would break the wood...
No, that makes sense enough, it starts as just a little pile of dust, but if he wants to connect it into a trail, he just spreads it out a bit. Now the only part I can't wrap my head around is how he manages to get it stuck to walls without it just falling.
