What is a gravity battery? Explaining gravitricity

  • in this video we can understand better what is a gravity battery or how to use gravity as a energy storage system like gravitricity.
    Gravitricity is a company based in Scotland that is developing an energy storage solution based on gravity, more precisely, gravitational potential energy. Take a heavy weight and raise it with an electric winch powered by any energy source, preferably a renewable one like solar or wind, and then release the weight when the stored energy is needed. The system is being designed mainly to be used in abandoned coal mines, where there are already deep shafts in place. Energy storage is a key factor for renewable energy generation, due to its intermittent nature. Most of the energy storage systems use batteries which have limited cycles (after a while they need to be replaced) or pumped hydropower storage that uses water reservoirs that require some big land spaces. Gravitricity system does not require big spaces because most of it lays underground and it has unlimited charging cycles, it goes up and down as many times as needed.
    To better understand how the system works, I decided to build a functional small prototype using a 3D printer and a solar panel. The design took into account the restrictions and the equation of gravitational potential energy.
    The prototype worked well and has the capacity to store 15 joules of solar energy. Despite its simplicity, the system has low energy density so it would be a little bit difficult to store energy required to power an entire house. However in bigger scales, probably it would be helpful to store renewable energy.

    Lots have cars that sit every night and then are moved during the day. Park it on a ramp or lift let it's gravitational weight work all night, then drive away in the morning and let a spring or solar raise the ramp ready for when the car comes home.

    So due to the fact that you are going to incur conversion losses between solar > (~80% loss) > electric > (~10-30%) > motor > (?% loss)> potential energy > (~10%) > DC electrical > (~10-30%) > AC Electrical >>> something else which incurs losses
    This really only makes sense if you are doing something directly mechanical with this energy and stop incuring those losses half way into that process.....like milling grain or spinning a fan. Something like that.
    If you want to use the energy for heat it makes more sense to store that heat in water or if you care to get more intense, in a phase change material, like wax
    solar > (~20% loss) > heat transfer fluid > ( thermal losses dependent on insulation but dont need to be super large.) > Wax > (functionally zero loss if the goal is to heat the home and the container is in the home but could be non trivial if the goal is to do long term storage....at which point there are other chemical means of long term heat storage like salt hydrates)
    there are ways to also use heat to cool the home. Which are a bit more complicated. But have better theoretical efficiencies than doing all the conversions to electricity.
    And at that point the losses of all the conversations may stand to justify the convenience, low losses, scalability, and power density of the batteries existence. Unless you have some reason you could never replace them. Or refurbish them, like in the case of lead acid batteries.

    But even then. The life cycle of a lead acid battery isnt that much shorter than the lifecycle of a consumer level turbine youre pulling the energy out of depending on the up front cost you are looking to put into it of course. Not to mention the hole itself which will likely need to be maintained.
    This makes more sense than say.....a fly wheel... or compressed gas (except for natural gas) for long term storage, but i think it has a limited application to mostly for use when mechanical applications are called for and long periods of time exist between generation and use. It's highly scalable in terms of you just need a deeper hole or a larger weight. But also, is limiting in the sense of how deep are you really going to dig that hole, and where are you going to build a basket of concrete or move rocks that far. Which may have a non- trivial carbon footprint that may be larger than years of use of this system.
    for the same amount of effort you could have a full geothermal or water pit based thermal battery system installed for as much or less effort, cost, and environmental impact. that would also likely store a much larger amount of energy and reduce your dependence on electrical energy meaning you need less batteries for your solar and therefore reducing the impact of them.
    More so if you can find a high temp storage solution like a more robust solar oven, that allows you to cook in it as well.

    I've been thinking of a similar design for storing energy. Something to look into as I have found great success with it, is using a worm drive gear attached to the weights to handle a super heavy load with a really high torque, that can be geared to spin a generator at high speeds, with super slow drop rate of the weight. 😎

    Why not pump water into a tank and release when you need electricity? Calculating the energy output per gallon would be relatively easy and would inform you of the tank size you need. Mechanically it is so much simpler as well. You just need two water tanks, piping, a pump, and a generator. Low maintenance and no crazy digging

    I have a off grid home, and have gave alot of thought about possibilitys of generating power, using solar, and using the excess to store in means other than batteries, I had thought about pumped storage, but I don't have the change in elevation to make it practical, same for gravity systems like this, I thought about putting a pulley in multiple trees, (I could easily suspend 20 tons of weight combined in trees, with 20-30 feet to fall), that's ALOT of work. The easiest, (not the most effiencey) would be to split water, use the hydrogen to fuel a generator, its only problem is storage, with refrigeration it can be stored in propane cylinders, for use when power is needed, or stored short term in smaller amounts, at lower pressure in inner tubes, but for certain sized solar power systems lead acid is not the best idea, lots of losses, if you have room for the panels, lead is somewhat OK, but lithium I's a night and day difference! I have lithium batteries, and still looking for alternative storage to use the power avalible after the batteries are charged! It could be hot water, cold water, for cutting power use later for heating water, or cooling the house, or. Compressed air storage, it could spina generator for power on demand, witch could be the best option!

    I lost you on the translation on the home system utilizing the well however I've been thinking about using buoyancy to convey the weigh vertically. perhaps a wooden vessel that could empty when it reaches the bottom partially providing the water to carry it back up and rather than powering a motor to tow the weight up, drain the reservoir using gravity to a secondary reservoir to enable you to pump it to a third, elevated reservoir using a Bunyip pump system and from there allow gravity to refill the gravity battery reservoir. It would be essentially free and perpetual energy after construction costs and maintenance. The only consumable would be water lost to evaporation. Using the weight as a temporary reservoir might add an unnecessary level of complexity however the increase in the mass of water vs. a solid would lend itself to more flexibility in what type of material to use for the battery weight. You could use an aluminum, plastic or some other durable material so long as it would hold water.

    Gravity batteries rarely make sense. Sure, it sounds like a great idea until you realize you can't even make toast with the power they can supply.

      I think you re right. In general the energy density just doesn't pay off. However, it may exits special conditions where it makes sense. I'm the case of gravitricity, they try to take advantage on deep holes that already exists (is after them to probe if it is a viable system) and dams for hydropower are basically gigantic gravitational storage devices. Let's keep looking for more examples

    Those proposing storgae seem to overlook that there is not a sustained and consistent excess of renewable generation. No excess, no storage requirement. Unless there is some practical way of reguating the rate of fall then the output will be asynchronus and that is not a good thing. Trying to brake a large mass under gravitational pull is no easy engineering matter
    Pumped storage is often mentioned but it's primary function is not storing 'excess' energy but to support frequency at times of stress to the grid as it can go from no output to full output in seconds.

    So you are depending on solar to charge a battery bank to aid in raising the weight? What are you going to do at night? This system cannot raise the weight alone. An external source is required.

      If you watch the gravitricity video they do not use battery banks...the whole point is to use gravity and weight to replace battery storage. Also note you can raise the weight with any excess electricity. It doesn't have to be solar, it can wind or whatever. The system doesn't have to work 24/7. It's sole purpose is to store up excess energy to use when needed.

      Correct me if I misunderstood, but are you claiming there is excess energy created that can lift the weight back up without any eternal source assisting?
      *If this is what you are claiming, then No!*
      This system cannot operate as a closed system!
      If there was excess electricity from Gravity, that would contradict the *_1st Law of Thermodynamics._* Energy cannot be created or destroyed. If there are any losses in a system, it can never achieve 100% efficiency. An external source must always be used to drive the system. *_I.E. An "External Source" is required to lift the weight back up!_*

      @@valveman12 Not extra electricity from gravity...the extra electricity we are talking about here is from say the solar or wind power. Let's say during the day you have full sun and the panels are producing more electricity than is needed by the system. That EXTRA amount is used to lift the extremely heavy weight with the motors upward storing the gravitation potential energy. Just like today Australia stores their excess energy in Tesla's batteries, this will store it in gravitation potential which the weight can be released downward when power needs to be stabilized or more power is required.

      Ok, I understand what you mean now. Yes, an external source would be required to move the weight up. The amount of energy required to move the weight back into position. *_Where X is the energy required to raise the weight and the output will be X - Losses._* If the external energy comes from solar panels, then when the panels are not able to work at night, the stored potential energy in the weight could be used to provide power.

      @@valveman12 The efficiency is claimed to be 80-90% so the L is relatively small and again remember this is EXTRA electricity you are storing that would go wasted otherwise. Why throw away the extra energy when you can store it up by lifting the weight? Just think if the weight was at full height by nightfall, Gravitricity claims their standard system would be storing enough power for 13000 homes for 2 hours. Why would Australia even need Tesla batteries if storing excess energy didn't help anything? This system is just replacing a battery storage medium for a gravity storage medium and doing so because they say it is way more cost effective. Search Gravitricity and watch the video titled "Latest Gravitricity Explainer Extended Animation Spring 2020".

      Springs can be adjusted for many years. Now you need a flywheel. Besides Springs meaning more than one, can be rewound using a simple starter motor 12/24v. Once set up and running, it will continue to run on its own 24/7 if you want. Now you can charge battery bank's for your home, while at the same time run the house.
      This is something my husband, has been working on in his mind and on paper for over 40 years. This is just the gist of it, as far as what I know about it. But he says if you get everything in the right order, it will work. Besides, it is far better than what this guy has shown us. And it stays at ground level.

    How is this more efficient that using a large flywheel? Since all the energy is being transferred through rotation, it seems like a flywheel would achieve the same power output with no mine shaft required.

      Flywheel needs to rotate at insane rpms to be able to store decent amount of energy causing it to explode.Also there is friction

      I agree with you on that point. It is an interesting concept (and maybe even worthwhile in country like my own - South Africa) but then you have to have access to very deep shafts to make it practical. The advantage of flywheels would be that you only need a small footprint for your installation. There is one footnote to the Gravitricity concept that probably was not addressed here, the system can be expanded to utilize a whole array of weights and not only one going up and down a shaft. A large number of weights can be stored at the top or bottom and lowered when there is a demand for power. They can be stored in some kind of magazine, like bullets inside a pistol. This system would work well where you use two generators/motors together where one would be generating with its weight going down while the other one is lifting its hook after storing a weight at the bottom of the shaft.

    As for the 'Gravitricity' concept: Why not build twin TOWERS with twin weights? One heavier, (say the left one) than the other, then slide an additional weight on the lighter (right one) that makes it heavier than the left one. The now heavier right one pulls the now lighter left one up. When the right one gets to the bottom, slide the extra weight off and the now heavier left one pulls the now lighter right one up. Then all you have to use energy for is to lift the EXTRA weight up as the right one goes up, to be slid back onto the right one, repeating the process.

    If I had 1 year I'd make 10x improvement on this. The current flaw with science is it needs to harness great ideas from ANYONE using the mass info of the internet. Give me $1million of funding, a website, and a group of people all over the world and this will be solved in a year (look at what SpaceX did to NASA with this philosophy). Creativity can come from a homeless man downtown or Einstein.

      I would say that the main goal of this project is to take advantage of abandoned infrastructure to produce clean energy. Innovation can be also applying known technology in a different way

      Don't leave us hanging...what is the better design? Gravitricity claims their system will be the cheapest storage for fast frequency response over things such as flow batteries, compressed air tanks, and lithium ion.
