Reading all of these comments has made me feel like I'm finally not alone 😭 I've had this sensation since I was little and I never understood what it was or why just walking ALWAYS gives me this horrible itchy feeling!... When I itch the area the itchiness blows up x100!! I've noticed that just running even harder through the itching makes it eventually subside 😢 it definitely takes determination to get through this. We can do ittt!! ❤️

I enjoy exercising but when the itchy sensation takes over I literally feel like stripping off my clothes and running to the nearest stream of hot water and immersing myself. I feel like screaming because my senses become weirdly heightened and the outside world immediately disgusts me...from the crawling critters on the ground to the smells in the air!!! ITS A CURSE!!!!

Indeed! The lack of exercising can lead to intense itching when you do start to exercise, and for some the pain can be so unbearable but it does go away within a week when your body adjusts. Here are some quick tips to allow your body to adjust through the itch period.
*Before you even start exercising, take an oral Benadryl which will neutralize the itching and you wont feel a thing. After 3/5 days your body should have adjusted and you will no longer need to take them.
*Warm up with a light walk and exercise at a light/medium pace for a short duration for a few days a week till your body adjusts to the changes. If you start to itch, back off the exercising immediately and walk it off.
*Rub lotion on, preferably medicated lotion which targets reactions. Apply before you exercise. However, if you itch everywhere the oral tablet works better.
    **********************
After 3/5 days you should be 100% itch free and if not see your doctor.

I get the extreme itchiness from walking too. If I’m on a brisk long walk about ten minutes in my legs will start itching like mad. It’s kind of scary to know my laziness has led my capillaries to collapse. Definitely need to keep a regular routine of exercise so that blood can flow!

That itch is like no other 😭, Its literally the worse feeling ever. At first its a little tingly feeling, then the tingling worsens to a huge itch forcing you to stop. When you try to itch the area, it burns and the itching spreads. it feels like your legs are on fire. Slapping it still burns but it does a better job at not spreading the itching sensation 😭😭

What doesn’t make sense is the fact that I ride my bike almost every day around 15 miles. Its a pretty good workout, lots of hills. I don’t get the itchy feeling when I ride my bike, but yet if I try to run, the itchy feeling comes. This debunks the claim that it’s due to inactivity.

Perhaps a way to get around it is to not RUN right off the bat. Start with walking, find the point that gets the itching sensation then build up your tolerance over time. Walking can be just as good as running (actually better, as it's lower impact and doesn't put as much strain on your knees) if you do it right! As long as you're not training for a marathon, walking is a fine alternative that may not send as much blood rushing as quickly!

I have a unique case. Ran throughout high school and military then started getting the itch out of nowhere during a period of peak fitness. Running is my first love-but this condition is my absolute scourge. I’m in top 1% fitness for my age, run almost daily and I still get it. There is no powering through my itch it just takes over until I’m dam near in shock. The intensity has driven me to tears on the roadside and more recently a b-line to CVS where I had to beg strangers for money to fund Benadryl because my Apple Pay wouldn’t work.

But you dont want to be taking those tablets your entire life so you have to build up fitness by excersizing at least every other day for about a month until you feel no itch at all anymore. then you can relax and exercise once every 3 days. But remember if you take a long break like an entire week off, you will feel the itch again. For me I can get back to no itch after two session. But if ive taken longer than a week off then im back to square one and its antihistamine pills and rebuilding fitness

So happy you made this! I'm one of the unfortunate rare ones who gets a much more extreme reaction, as in full blown can't breathe, itchy, hives, airways swelling, etc etc. We spent a year or two (as I battled through twice-weekly Tae Kwon Do, increasingly often landing me in hospital) trying to get to the bottom of it. Specialist immunologists were saying that exercise could trigger it, but it must be due to having eaten something or having been exposed to something I was allergic to beforehand. When I'd eliminated everything but air, clothes, water and... uh... myself, I was left with just the exercise. I'm fine with non-cardio (yoga etc) and mild cardio, but no running for me...
There's some suggestion that it can be temporary, and it can definitely manifest suddenly even in high-level athletes with no history of it. I've seen it suggested that you start doing low-level and slowly build up to hopefully overcome it, but with no real evidence attached.
TLDR: It's cool to see someone talking about this, rather than brushing it off as just an excuse, so thanks!

    Here to help
Ive had this for a while now Ive noticed that taking long breaks from working out make it worse, running in the cold, and not getting a stretch. If u can change those things you ill see alot of improvement the stretching is probably the most important, you wanna get the blood flow moving good in your legs before you start the workout.

I'm pretty active exercise person. I love getting into the rhythmic everyday thing of being active but sometimes we can get off the track of being active. I have to admit that exercise is sometimes not my best friend. I get into addictive exercise marathons. And then it comes to me being lazy. So yeah I know how it feels to have itchy legs that itch like hell. I had to happen today and which sucks like hell. It ain't fun. So yeah it's better to stay active then to not. Yep so it all has to do with blood flow and your capillaries breaking down. So stay active and get a good blood flow

Firm massaging of your legs or soaking in really warm water( as warm as you can tolerate it, not hot water 😬) before you exercise really help me prevent the itching. When you you massage, you want to warm your skin to get blood flowing to that area. It really really helps.

Omg I finally get answers! I've been trying to explain this to people for years and everyone always thinks it's something else. My clothes rubbing and causing friction, my laundry detergent causing a skin reaction, I'm allergic to my own sweat, I'm allergic to the pollen in the air/outdoors...the list goes on. This itching always causes me to have to stop whatever exercise I'm doing until it subsides. Sometimes it's so bad and doesn't go away until I take a warm shower. It's SO HORRIBLE and annoying! But I am glad this is actually a common problem. Thanks for the video! x

Ahhh! This makes me feel so much better that I am not alone! Ugh this issue has been really holding me back from my normal workout routine. I used to workout a lot as a preteen but at a point I started getting itchy legs when every time I ran. It would be so annoying and I would scratch until I would be covered in red welts a long my legs from all the scratching. I now take Zyrtec every day to manage the issue. I though I grew out of it but apparently not because whenever I miss a dose of Zyrtec, even just walking in a store or walking to class can trigger an attack. So I guess I will be keeping an antihistamine handy,

Kristina it's not just the blood pumping. Sometimes the weather as you mentioned can actually irritate the skin like actually drying your skin out or other things. Try using baby powder or gold bond. It will help. I get the itchy skin a lot in the winter just when I go outside and am walking around for awhile and I exercise regularly. So try the baby powder or gold bond. It will help! Put it on before you workout.

Best solution I found out is to try to do a little stretching on that particular body part. Instant relief and it feels so relaxing. Just make sure you DO IT RIGHT by doing a little research first or asking your instructor or it will lead to other problems like literally ripping your muscles from over-stretching which is far worse. Do it slowly, don't bounce-stretch, and don't go over your stretch limit. Best of luck to all you people :)

Personally, I actually have a sensitivity to changes in body temperature called cholinergic urticaria. I break out in hives all over my body when I sweat or am exposed to the sun for too long (this sensitivity runs in my family). So, I don't want any viewers to assume that this is the only cause of itchiness while running. Fortunately, I'm able to take an antihistamine before exercising and it combats the issue.

I had a similar thing happen to me and it happened when there was a drastic change in temperature. I had been running for a while so I figured that was why it happened. The first thing I did when I got home was to shower and drink some water. Hydration is probably the best thing to combat it because it hasn't happened to me since. Give it a try and make sure you hydrate before and after you workout.

I have the same problem and actually just did the same google search. My itchiness is a full body experience. I have ruled out this explanation because I work out 6 days a week. Basically I have concluded what I already knew and it's that I have dry skin and running in the winter really seems to dry it more and just cause itch attacks. Lotioning my arms really has helped but then I find all those parts I never new could itch... I blame my manly manly axe soap which just turned my skin into a desert instead of moisturizing it properly.
