  • I just thought I would do a video for my ebay buyers and others who experience problems using a gotek as an external floppy drive. Here are a few tricks to try.

    (I sell pre-modded Goteks and external drive adapters in my ebay store)

    I now sell active external adapters in my ebay store. Check the link to my store in the description.

    I recently try to upload 3.20 version, but the process randomly stuck between 60 an 75% on both of my Goteks. The 3.18 can be uploaded just fine and without problems. Uploaded with FTDI adapter and STM flash loader demonstrator.

    I have external gotek and internal stock drive. DF1 as internal is not seen either in XCOPY or amigatest kit. At least it is not recognized as DF1 - when I force to test DF1 - it will test DF1 properly. Idk what is going on :) Thanks for advice.

    Great and very precise video. I am in the middle of purchasing a Gotek for the A500 . I want to also leave my internal drive as a floppy disk. I have been told that if I dont use the switch (DF0/DF1) to select the Gotek (External) I will not be able to boot from the Gotek. This also means the floppy drive will not show up, so I cannot copy disk from the floppy to the gotek using x-copy. If I want to copy from the floppy to the Gotek I need to ensure that the floppy boots first. This is using a supply cable, Not the one from an old external drive. What your thoughts on this. Is tht correct or will the cable from an old external drive work better ? Thanks

      The only way to boot from an external drive is to make a mod to one of the chips on the motherboard. Also newer roms let you boot from DF1.

    would the jumper be S1 for a second drive for an Amiga 1200?

    • @retrofriends
      @retrofriends  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The only time you would put it on s1 is if you had a second internal drive. This would only apply to a big box Amiga. There may be external drive adapters that would require s1, but I can't speak for them. I know that the external adapter that I sell on eBay is based on an original Amiga external drive and you leave it at s0.

    im struggling with how you run/connect this without a floppy interface like what is in the inside of every amiga external drive ?

      The Amiga is equipped with an external port for flippy drives. This port can be thought of as an external "floppy interface". I recommend using an external drive adapter to utililize the external port, such as the one I sell in my ebay store (link in the description).

    I have the very same passive external adapter (Electronica 4U). I have flashed my older Gotek to FF 3.39. Previously, I was using the Cortex firmware. I had given up on ever getting the Gotek to work externally, but with your videos, I thought I'd give it another try. I'm using it with an A1200 and PiStorm32 Lite, AmigaOS 3.1.4 and associated ROMs.
    What I'm finding is that the system will not boot from the Gotek externally, and as such, there is no opportunity to assign ADF files to slots. If I connect it internally, it's just fine. I have the jumpers set to S0 and configured the FF.CFG file as you described (interface = amiga). I do not have an OLED display and all I see on the 7 segment display is 000. It flashes briefly to other indiscernible characters when the buttons are pushed, but all I get on the Workbench display is "DF1: Unknown". I ordered one of your pre-configured drives from your eBay store, praying that will work as I much prefer to have a real physical drive installed in my A1200.

      The Gotek should be displaying the number of the disc image selected. It would even do so only with power connected - No ribbon cable. So you can try that, and if the GoTek always has the three zeros then there's something wrong with it. You should try different USB thumb drives, and ensure they are all formatted to FAT32.

      @@retrofriends thanks. I hooked it up internally and it works fine. Seems like it's just an issue with the external adapter. Hopefully the pre-configured one I purchased isn't afflicted by the same issue. This is a post-Commodore A1200 (Escom era, I believe). It does not have their notorious "fix" as near as I can tell... but it's possible that maybe someone tweaked something along the way.

      @@cwa107 Oh okay. Well I sell a external adapter of my own in my eBay store. It has active logic on it, and is therefore more compatible - Even works with real Amiga mechanical drives. That passive cable should work. I wonder if there's anything wrong with the cable or even your external floppy port.

      @@retrofriends thanks for the head's up on your own external adapter. I will check that out for sure.

      @@retrofriends I received your pre-configured Gotek drive. Very nicely made, thank you very much. It does not work with my external adapter and behaves very much the same way as my older unit does. I am starting to think the external adapter is at issue as I can't seem to get anything working with it. Unfortunately, the only other physical Amiga I have to test it with is a CD-32 and that doesn't have a Floppy port. Thanks for your help - I will take a look at your eBay store and see if I can find that adapter.

    Hello. Could you recherch for a interface with raspberry to acces to a real floppy pc/amiga from gpio ?

      I seem to remember someone doing something similar. I suggest trying to look for it on the webs.

    Do you need to have boot selector installed to boot from external Gotek as DF0 ?

    • @retrofriends
      @retrofriends  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, unless you do a hardware mod to "fool" the Amiga into thinking the external is DF0. People sell this mod on ebay, and you can do it yourself. Just google it.

      I have at least two videos on the subject. Click my icon and visit my channel. I have a gotek playlist.
