- Seal pups Cookie and Elmo are only a week old when they may swim for the first time together, be prepared for a cuteness overload!
Cookie and Elmo are Common seal pups, they lost their mother and are now taken care of by Sealcentre Pieterburen. When they are old enough, they will be released into the wild again.

Hi! We've been getting a lot of feedback on why there's no ramp in the water for the seal pups? Thank you for the interest and we'll gladly try explaining it here:
The first time these pups get into the water there is always at least one of our experienced seal nurses there to help them out in case they really can't get out. But they usually get it after their second or third attempt. If you watch closely, you can see that their hind legs (or flippers if you will) actually create the propulsion to launch them onto the edge. This is what these pups quickly figure out.
In fact: in nature, these pups are done weaning after an average of 24 days and from that point on are living life independently, as their mother leaves them. So despite their looks, they are very strong from an early age already!
I guess if they jump into the water from an ice sheet, there's no ramp either

It was clear they didn't want to leave each other. You'd think they would have a sort of slope so they could ease their way in and also get out when they wanted as one of them was panicking a little

But they can stay longer than humans down there.
@@haroc986 they can’t. But they can hold it for a long time like 30 minutes to up to an hour I’m pretty sure. They dive pretty deep as well which is cool.

Instincts are so awesome. They're automatically attracted to water and know how to swim.

no not really. cookie's first swim shows that hes not atracted to water. how should he be atracted to it if he never saw it and doesnt know what it is. even after a push into the water he wants to instantly exit it. but yeah they learn fast how to move in water cause they are build for it

You should go and take a look at this rescue-centre in Pieterburen (in the north of the Netherlands).
It's really great fun looking at these animals. It appears they always, non stop, are playing.

@@roche320 do you think there are tile walls with no purchase in the wild? rocky and sandy beaches have grip for purchase, and slopes.
@@roche320 Yes there are. If you look at rocky ledges where seals sit at the edge of the sea. They are not smooth tile like the pool. They have the grip factor. Pool is very slick and smooth, and I think a shelf would help support them and reassure them they could climb back out.

Exactly how I look entering a pool of water
I visited Pieterburen its in the middle of nowhere. We stayed in a hotel in a very tiny town. Best part was “ wadlopen “. Pieterburen is very tiny but still it was fun. We made a nice donation 😊

Thank you for your support! Pieterburen is indeed a very small town. On average, around 400 seals arrive in our Sealcentre each year. Pieterburen has around 380 inhabitants!

Yep
They can hold breath pretty long even that yong. Couple minutes with no breath is just nothing. Mature spicies can hold their breath for 30 min, and much more. They have special oxigen binding system and saturate their body with it, not just blood.

@@victorgillmore3180 Yes they fascinating! And have an extreme adoptations! When they dive, oxygen economy mode is enables, hart rate drops to as minimum as just seweral beats per minute, muscles work anaerobic. And they able to do sucessful long hunts in the deeps. As deep as 1 km and more!
