Monthly Grocery Haul | Large Family of 8 | Costco, Aldi, Coles, Woolworths | Off Grid Australia

  • During our Jan/Feb month the car blew a radiator, due to it being our only vehicle there was some finagling to be able to fix it and get it running again, it meant that there was almost 6 weeks between shops! This is reflected in some of the dry goods basics being bought in larger than usual quantities.
    I went over budget slightly, but that is to be expected with a couple of the things I bought and the extras :D

    My computer must have been listening to us today, as we did our big shop and packaged up our meals at home, as this popped up randomly tonight! We also have 6 kids, and we budget $800 a month on food plus garden but we are struggling to keep to that with the prices of everything at present! Lovely to see another family doing similar! We don't have Costco, but very thankful for Aldi! It is planting week, so I am excited for that! We only live in a normal town 1/4 acre block so we don't have a lot of space.

      We are lucky that I can allocate that $1400, we get a few things that are a bit decadent that we could probably stop, but I'm glad we can manage it, buying the big boxes of fruit to preserve for later helps too!
      Definitely need to get some root veg and some snow peas etc out in the garden atm in the lead up to the cooler weather! :D

    What a chore to get get your monthly supplies! You must be worn out! I come from a very large family, so I know how hard you work, your kids remind me of when mom and dad went grocery shopping and us kids helped get it inside. Wish we had some of the items you get there, in small town US. You do an amazing job taking care of your family!!! God Bless you all!

    For a much more affordable but equally effective multipurpose cleaner, I go to Bunnings and buy the 5 litre Activ-o. It's a few cents under $30 but as you only use 30ml in a 500 ml spray bottle, it lasts for years. I'm still on the same 5litre bottle from April 2020. I discovered Bunnings has a great range of household cleaners during the great TP and cleaner shortage of 2020.

    • @OurSmallFootprint

      I'll have to have a look, thankyou! We use citrus vinegar a lot and I don't buy sprays much, but sometimes they're handy to have around, especially in an environment like ours :)

    • @vegemitegirl1971
      @vegemitegirl1971 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@OurSmallFootprint I don't like to use a lot of commercially prepared cleaners either but I do like them for the laundry, toilet and bathroom. We had our 16 year old cat die recently. As she was incontinent near the end, my Activ-o got used daily. We kept her confined to the kitchen, laundry, toilet and bathroom, with plywood boards blocking the doorways which kept her off the carpet and any accidents on the tiled floors were easier to deal with.

    • @OurSmallFootprint
      @OurSmallFootprint  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@vegemitegirl1971 They definitely have their place! which is why I buy those couple of bottles, and I quite regularly dilute them to make them last longer! I like to clean out the esky's after the shopping trip with them because the meat always leaks and then they sit for 5/6 weeks until I use them again etc! and sometimes, the amount of vinegar you have to use to get things clean would end up really expensive too! :D

      Definitely, My mum was with me on this shopping trip and so much was just higher, and with the quantities I buy then it adds up, even things like the dried pasta $1 instead of 80c a bag, that increase is significant when you are purchasing 20 bags of it or so (which is quite a few months supply for us, but still, it all adds up!). Meat has increased too, the mince is 9.99kg instead of 8.99kg that it was a bit before Christmas, it makes it hard.

    613 subs , you're doing fantastic 🤩 That clock is so cute! I think you did fantastic to stay under the monthly budget. We're having trouble getting gluten free pasta the most . We can get what we need or at least an ok substitute usually, for other things. The rice puffs i prefer are just not available and sweet potato chips aren't even being ordered in and thats pretty much the only bought foods my little can eat. We'll have to be inventive . I often think how challenging it would be to film as I'm doing the real stuff, Instagram is pretty easy , so I love that you're accepting that challenge and experimenting with taking us along. Thanks for sharing, lovely 💙

    • @OurSmallFootprint
      @OurSmallFootprint  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We're lucky that our allergies are mostly just dairy related these days, gives me so much more flexibility and I can make pasta from scratch but on a busy day, there's nothing better than having pre made stuff in a tote to throw in! And realistically, its just flour and water, so I tell myself lol. Have you checked out amazon ? I find that the prime membership is well worth some of the stuff you can get there, I have stuff in my cart atm to buy, popcorn, sesame seeds a few things that work out really well priced especially with free shipping!

    Hi
    I am new to your channel and I just wanted to say that I too buy that PARATHA bread it's yummy and goes down so well when I do my home made Indian Currie's, they are just so easy pop them in the frying pan and turn over when the one side is cooked. They are great for either mopping up the sauce or you can pick up the curry using this bread especially good cos you can just break it apart plus no need to add oil for frying them 🙂. Wonder if you can get/or tried the one with spring onion? They are lovely too.
    Plus it's hard just to have one don't you think????
    Enjoying your food haul 👍

      I really like it as my 'vegetable oil'. when I need something that calls for vegetable oil I generally use that, all oils have their pros and cons, but I find it one of the better choices, and its inexpensive, I think 30c/100ml kind of pricing.

    I am a new subscriber and hats off to you coz I’m exhausted just thinking of putting that haul of groceries away,let alone having to sort,split,seperate,marinate or cook half the stuff,let alone canning and preserving fruit!! I’m curious what the rice milk is for,is that a milk substitute?
    Loved how it was all hands on deck when it came to unloading the groceries when you got home.👍👏🏻

    • @OurSmallFootprint
      @OurSmallFootprint  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it’s why I hesitated on filming it for so long, by the time I get it all in, the extra step of staging it and recording it, urgh! Lol
      5 of the kids have cows milk protein issues, we’ve been able to introduce fermented cows milk like yoghurt and kefir but they were brought up on rice milk as a simple alternative, they use it pretty much only on their cereal lol. I use more nutrient dense milks in baking etc but rice milk is their choice for cereal!

    Just wanted to say hey from about 3hrs north east of you :) Used to head out your way a fair bit growing up with my dad :) Oh and your videos convinced me to sign up at Costco. Was in there yesterday, the NL one is about an hour from us (we are at Mt Mee) so thankfully not too far but I sure wont be going there on a weekend ever again. Have a great day.

      @OurSmallFootprint  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Its nice out here, dry and dusty, but we love it lol. We originally bought this block as a weekender with an intention of maybe moving out eventually, but life happened lol.
      Definitely no weekend Costco'ing lol. There's a lot of things that aren't much cheaper than Coles/Woollies when they have half price specials, but because we only shop monthly I can rarely time my shopping to take advantage of that, so it makes it much easier to budget at the Costco pricing and if I score some half price specials then Awesome! :)

    • @OurSmallFootprint
      @OurSmallFootprint  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't tried it yet, it seems a little counter intuitive to be honest, the cost of pineapple juice is quite high, so canning in it seems a bit meh. But the kids love pineapple on their pizza and last month with the shortages and stuff I could barely get any, and the stuff you can get is from overseas, so I wondered if canning my own zucchini in pineapple juice might work well for them to use on pizza. I loved the idea of canning it in shreds in pineapple juice to use for quick breads during winter too, but again, there's the cost of the pineapple juice, so I'm going to hold off on my opinion until I see how much juice is actually used in each jar kind of thing :D
