  • This episode of "Stoked on Fishing" dives into the incredible story of how California's white sea bass population was restored through the dedication of scientists, anglers, and volunteers. Learn about the groundbreaking saltwater fish hatchery program started in the 1970s by Hubbs SeaWorld Research Institute and passionate sports fishermen. Hear how recreational anglers self-imposed taxes and fees to help fund the Ocean Resources Enhancement and Hatchery Program (OREHP) and dedicated countless volunteer hours to raise white sea bass from eggs in captivity and release them back to the wild. Follow the white sea bass's journey from broodstock collection to egg fertilization to the hatchery tanks through their grow-out at special facilities along the California coast. Discover how science and genomics are now being used to evaluate the impact of the millions of hatchery-raised white sea bass that have been released over the decades. See how organizations like CCA California, the Coastal Conservation Association, and California Department of Fish and Wildlife have collaborated with Hubbs SeaWorld and volunteer anglers to bring this important sportfish back from the brink of collapse through a groundbreaking saltwater fish hatchery program.

@@stephenearly9550 regardless of this program, the amount of fishing pressure the islands and local sd get every year will keep those areas barren

I have seen big white sea bass as 65lb to 70lb caught.

I just want to go ahead and point out the obvious. The same reason they can't find the tags on these larger fish, is the same reason that the White Seabass isn't around our area in California anymore, and it's the same reason why Fish and Game make dumb decisions. It's because fish don't stay in one spot forever, they move around, like any other herd of animal do. When the activity in California got so great that the fish had more pressure on them, they started moving out and they haven't returned. Likewise, when these smaller seabass start figuring out what the other wild seabass are doing, they do the same thing and move out. I can't believe how naive these very intelligent people are, so much so that they can't figure out the obvious.

It's a shame you have. to pay a tax to go fishing and we all know how well California manages the state's tax revenue.
