They put Galileo under house arrest since he insulted the pope, _the head of the institution funding him,_ in his publication. If anything, he got off easy.
He probably wouldn't have ended up excommunicated if his response to pope Urban VIII (who lifted the original ban on him being allowed to publish and had previously been his friend) requesting that Galileo look at his own arguments in favor of geocentrism for his new book was to have the arguments spoken by a character -literally named Simpleton-. Yes, the Church ended up using dogmatic reasons to suppress his work, but every single time they did it was preceded by Galileo intentionally insulting his supporters in said church. The man couldn't play politics for shit, and that will get controversial research killed just as fast today as it did back then, even if it won't get you imprisoned over it.

Actually the plural is spelled the same but pronounced differently. Singular is “Poke-E-Mon” and plural is “Poke-Ay-Mon”.
