  • Joel Ong - "Understanding Mixed Modes (for Fun and for Profit)" (IvS seminar 07/11/2024)
Abstract: In evolved stars, standing pressure waves (or `p-modes') in the envelope couple to gravity waves (`g-modes') deep inside their interiors. The resulting gravitoacoustic mixed modes exhibit nonlinear ``avoided crossings'' -- a ubiquitous phenomenon in the general physics of many-body dynamical systems -- and are our only observational window into rotation, magnetism, and stellar structure deep into the cores of red giants. I first review some recent advances in our understanding of how this coupling between p- and g-modes operate. While most observational applications of mixed modes exploit their ability to probe rotation and magnetism in cores of red giants using g-modes, I present some recent advances -- both theoretical and observational -- in using the p-modes of red giants instead, to understand the physics of convective boundary mixing.
