Abstract: Gravitational wave astronomy has provided a new horizon to observational research, one predominated by binary black hole mergers. These dynamical events are thought to arise from close stellar binaries that eject much of their angular momentum through a phase of Roche lobe overflow (RLO). Utilizing a novel methodology for global 3D simulations of RLO systems, I have tracked mass and angular momentum transport across the entire RLO phase. This analysis provides a first look at the timescale and efficiency of RLO and characterizes the progenitor population behind the merging binary black holes we see today.
