Long T30 socket drive is the key. Must have watched your video a dozen times to have the confidence to tackle my 2013 VW Touareg TDI coolant leak. Expensively learned that the dealers don't know how to solve this because VW hasn't posted a tech bulletin on the source. Dealer couldn't find the coolant leak with a pressure test held overnight. By this time I had mostly oil in the valley because the coolant boils off over time. So they focused on the oil leak. They replaced the oil cooler and its transition plate (and gaskets - your oil leak point?) and egr cooler (coolant in the exhaust not proven) under the TDI extended warranty, and the timing cover, water pump, and oil thermoset on my tab. The oil leak was solved but coolant level was dropping and valley filled with coolant again two weeks later. I used your video to go back in myself and replace the coolant bypass valve and intermittent flange (tricky fit, but you can do it without removing the oil cooler). Note that the new bypass has been modified to strengthen the rotary bushing - you can see if the old one was leaking it was going to be very slow. Everything has been tight now for over 100 miles. Becare with the fuel pressure sensor - broke mine using a tight 6 sided socket - use a 12 point. Replaced it with a Vemo (5HWP53) for a 3rd of the VW price - works well. Also recommend getting the seal ring that doesn't come with the intermediate flange PN N-908-091-02. It's a blind mate to the egr. Thanks Q!!
Nice work and thanks for that seal ring part number, have had trouble finding it! My coolant leak is resolved and oil consumption improved, I still have some oil accumulation in my valley. I think I may be on my way to a timing cover gasket, I have die in the oil I hope to trace towards the source. The unfortunate part is that I may have to take the intake off again to do this…
@@driventofailure Wondering if you were successful with the timing cover gasket change? I'm lower mileage than you (at a 100K), but I have seen some horror stories on TDI fuel pump failures at this mile point. Have you thought about changing your FP preemptively?
I got a 2014 Touareg executive 3.0 TDI Diesel and I got to replace the EGR cooler and oil cooler pretty much the exactly the same thing that you did in your video is what I got to do a question is is where did you order your parts from because that's a hell of a deal on how much the intercooler and the oil cooler cost everywhere I get see him and everywhere I go they're both running anywhere between 300 for the oil cooler and close to four hundred for the EGR cooler if you have a place that has better prices would you please let me know
I would like to add what I have experienced on my '14 Touareg TDI. Started noticing a strong smell of diesel and oil burning for 6-8 weeks. At same time started noticing I was needing to add coolant about once a week. Then a couple weeks later the coolant reservoir was pitch black. Removed cap and it was full of diesel Oil. Took to Little Rock dealer. Said it was the Oil Cooler. Took 2 weeks to repair. Went to pick up and reservoir was still pitch black and looked to have mostly oil in it. They said they flushed it but I'm not sure how. So left it with them for 3 more days and they said it took 5 more flushes to get rid of most all the oil. But Car continued to use Coolant. So left at dealer to diagnose, and they said that after communications with VW they now believe the EGR Cooler is failing, as the coolant does not seem to be going anywhere else. From this video I can now see the Dealer had to remove the EGR Cooler to get to the Oil Cooler. I wish they would have replaced both, or at least told me there was a fair chance that it might be both. OR, the tech messed something up when they removed the EGR Cooler while doing the Oil Cooler repair. I will never know.
It definitely helps to drain the oil. I had a fresh oil change a week before I started this project and when I pulled the oil cooler up the top of the motor filled up with oil. I only had coolant on the top of the engine when I started the project. I just need to buy the parts, and finish the project hopefully in the next week or two. Thank you for posting this video. It’s really helpful.
Bro there is another set of parts that may be causing your leak. I am talking about the plastic cover that bolts to the front engine cover. Part number 059103525F. I just posted a video series on my TH-cam channel showing how to do the repair.

Thankyou for this excellent video, best one out there. Just done this job on an audi A7 and it was incredibly helpful. Some tips from my experience: I had to pre load one of the intake bolts which had a very tight gap when re installing. I think it was the front one. For the egr clamp I used torque of 6nm plus a 90 degree turn to tighten it back up. Also when removing the intake be very careful to remove the tube that connects to the coolant reservoir. You have to disconnect this as it runs over the intake. I tried to lift it over and snapped it off and this delayed my re build. Thanks again!

@driven to failure thanks for sharing this. I thought you need to flush out all coolant and engine oil before starting this job. But didn’t notice any coolant or oil gushing out your whole video.

don't forget that the plastic piece that bolts to the front engine cover also is a common leak culprit...while the inlet manifold is off, front "timing" case needs to come off for it to be unbolted, don't forget the hidden bolt to the far right thats behind a pulley or you may snap the case while trying to pry it off like me, you will also need the oil filter housing rubber gaskets aswell.

Hey there; currently having these exact needed repairs on my Porsche TDI, and my dealer is claiming that the extended emissions warranty does not cover these components. EGR, Oil Cooler etc. I am not sure how these components are not related/covered under this.
Hi Cody, Please google, Diesel Gate warranty, Porsche, VW and Audi. It will list all these coverage's. Your TDI has to be under 10 years from purchase in service date and under 120,000 miles. Lastly, don't be afraid to call Porsche corporate. Cheers, Mick @@codygoodwin1097

I have this same issue but prior to discovering it I received a coolant temperature sensor code that kept appearing until I replaced all 3 coolant temp sensors. Less than 5k miles later the same code is back again?! (Yes, after clearing the code each time) Any additional insight is much appreciated.
Im pretty sure i have the same problem. Lots of oil everywhere when its running. Car keeps asking for a little bit of coolant every three months or so. I do not have the know how or tools to deal with it. How much will the dealer charge me???
So my '13 tdi Touareg has this issue. The oil hasn't been dropping for a while, the coolant was also going really good without any leaks (Never had to add any for months). A few weeks ago, I was driving it and the low coolant light came on while on the highway and it was way below the min level. After topping it off, I drove off to a place I needed to go. Spent about 25 minutes there, then I came back, started the car and the coolant was below min once again. Then I topped it off again. Then the car sat in my driveway for a few weeks without any start up and I came back to it about 3 weeks later to find a small dried up puddle on the ground the size of a few quarters side to side. Then I started the car and checked the coolant, this time it was WAAY below what it usual drops down to. Way below the minimum line. I added coolant once again. I drove to where I needed to go which wasn't too far. I parked the car. About an hour later I come back and there are two relatively big puddles. It didn't look like it was oil because it wasn't super black nor was it "oily". It was kinda oily but not engine oil "oily". Then I drove back to my house and opened the hood to find a good amount of "liquid" in the front right part of the engine bay. It looks like it's oil but the feeling isn't convincing me that it is. Also the electronic oil dipstick in the car doesn't show any lost oil. It's been the same for a long time. I don't know what to do. I believe that it's coolant but I don't know where it's coming from. Maybe the liquid scattered in the engine bay is something old, maybe I just noticed it.
Great video. Thanks for making. Did I understand correctly that you were losing an inch of coolant per 40 miles? Did you ever test pressure on coolant system? I am losing an inch of coolant every 500 miles or so on my ‘14 Touareg tdi. I’ve tested coolant pressure and it holds. Thanks!

I have this problem in my '13 Touareg too. Been slowly losing coolant over the last year or so but now there's oil in the valley (Que Jed Clampett!). I like my local dealer but they told me just yesterday that it would require them to drop the engine to fix it! NAH!
I paid for one through emanuals, but it was a mess. Something was up with the organization of the pages, it didn't flow. I ended up finding one in the clubtreg forum after that.
Have you ever had oil in the coolant tank.. I just noticed today. I added coolant 2 weeks ago.. and today I just wanted to check and seen it was black from oil…
i stumbled upon this video and I have a question. I have oil in my coolant reserve. I am assuming it is the oil pump cooler and not a gasket..what are your thoughts. My dealer quoted my 3200 to do an oil cooler job and the part is only 400..what a rip off
It’s likely gaskets, there are several in there… the quote is similar to what I got, there is a bit of labor involved to get down in there and also gaskets to replace on the manifold. They may also be doing some intake carbon cleaning while in there which is messy and time consuming. Definitely some while your in there type work…
I just wanted to sat thank you for this video I followed your steps and fixed the same problem It was not easy job but saved a lot Also would like to mention parts prices $460 in Chicago area It took me about 8 hours
What exactly did you use for cleaning the manifold for use on the drill? Figure I'll buy whatever pipe cleaner you used so I know it works. Thanks for the video. I sure wish it took me 5 minutes to finagle the intake manifold off, took me more like 5 hours, at least it felt like that.
Don't forget about the plastic piece bolted to the flont engine cover. Part number 059103525F. There is a video series on replacing that part th-cam.com/video/sTnSVnOS4fQ/w-d-xo.htmlsi=iIIj3weuGQ4pm7En
Very nice video, what about the oil change did u do that bcs it was needed or it is recommended to have it done for this job? I will hit that job soon but my oil change was done just a few weeks ago. What do you recommend? Thanks.
This is an opinion, I did it because I was due for one. If your comfortable that you didn't get any foreign crud in the oil passages when you have it all open you should be good. You may need to add a little for anything you lose when the oil cooler pulls up, my cooler had some oil sitting in it's passages still.
Yes, so the gasket between the oil cooler and mounting plate was hard and had some spots where coolant was sneaking through. Also the shaft running through the coolant bypass valve is a contributor. Part numbers are listed in the video description, I used FCP euro for all the parts.
@@driventofailure Thank you! Mine is 2015 with 260k km and it has been having exact same symptoms for some time. I went to install new winter tires last week and I asked the guy to see if he can find the leak. He said it is a pierced radiator as he pressure tested it, I doubt that and I believe I have the same issue.
I feel like the radiator would be visible with residue or dripping to the under covers. Maybe you can get a camera down through the intake manifold to confirm... or inspection mirror and flashlight.
@@driventofailure Thank you! I can confirm now I have the same problem. Did you change the oil cooler or the original was good? How many miles have you put in after the repair and is holding up?
I did replace the oil cooler because I had it and I was in there already. Didn't see anything evident, but also didn't do a pressure check on it. I have had about 500 miles on it now, fluid levels have not changed. Have not sent the camera back down yet. No apparent fluids dripping anywhere. Feeling good about.
very nice video. Did you anytime lose all the coolant in the reservoir? happend to me 3 times now and i can see some fluid in the middle but havent looked more into it.. like i went to work, coolant was fine, 10 hrs later when going home the car warned for low level, then its was like 2cm of fluid in the bottom of the reservoir.. then fll it up and its fine for couple of months:p
That's seems like a large amount of fluid, much more than what I experienced. Mine would just dip below the fill mark and trigger the low coolant light.
My 2012 has a small drip that hits the drive way. Not loosing enough to worry about it yet……but o I’m Going thru about 300 ml of oil every 2k miles. I change oil at 5k intervals. So I can top off once and that general lasts. My X3 was a leaker too, far worse 😂. No coolant loss, drip is not destroying the driveway yet. Once either of those occur I’ll drop a grand on it. And take the wife’s TDI A6 which is far better put together despite similar drive trains

Thanks!
I did not pressure test, I was basing my circumstances on the fact that I was not seeing evidence of leaking/dripping or burning through exhaust
EXCELLENT VIDEO GOING TO DO MY AUDI A6 3 LITRE STARTED OIL LEAKING AROUND THE COOLER SO GOING TO CHANGE THE LOT LIKE YOU DID EXCELLENT HELP THIS VIDEO ARE THE PARTS SAME ON MY 2007 A6 AR DIFFERENT WHERE DID YOU BUY THE PARTS AUDI OR INTERNET AS MY CAR IS OLDER SO NEED TO KEEP COST DOWN THANKS AGAIN GREAT
Did you have a lot of oil underneath the engine as well?
Having the same issue, but I’m not leaking oil, going gallon coolant every 4 months … seems during cold days it leaks
hi where did you buy parts ?
Hi whats are the part numbers anyone? Thanks
I have this problem in my '13 Touareg too. Been slowly losing coolant over the last year or so but now there's oil in the valley (Que Jed Clampett!). I like my local dealer but they told me just yesterday that it would require them to drop the engine to fix it! NAH!
Where did you get your maintenance manual from?
I paid for one through emanuals, but it was a mess. Something was up with the organization of the pages, it didn't flow. I ended up finding one in the clubtreg forum after that.
Have you ever had oil in the coolant tank.. I just noticed today. I added coolant 2 weeks ago.. and today I just wanted to check and seen it was black from oil…
I never had that, but I could see that if the seal on the oil cooler mounting plate was compromised you could have some cross contamination...
i stumbled upon this video and I have a question.
Definitely some while your in there type work…
I just wanted to sat thank you for this video
I followed your steps and fixed the same problem
It was not easy job but saved a lot
Also would like to mention parts prices $460 in Chicago area
It took me about 8 hours
Where did you get the oil dip stick? Is this the one from FCP euro?, I want to get one before they are discontinued completely.
I found one on eBay. Came from somewhere in Europe, over $40 if you can believe it 🫠
Great job on the video, thanks for the insight. I'll be doing this to my A7 tdi, what software or where did you get the print outs from?
It's the oem maintenance manual found on the clubtouareg forum 🤘🏻
@@driventofailure thanks. I'll go check it out before I get started
@@driventofailure BTW, where did you get your parts from FCP, ECS, or dealer?
I used FCP
super nice job ,thanks
LEGEND!!!
It was a 10pc or so of pipe cleaner brushes from AdvanceAuto, I clipped the little eye-lit off the end and stuck it in a drill.
@@driventofailure Thank you. Great video.
Where did you get your torque specs from?
The maintenance manual
EGR cooler probably worth inspection
Excellent video, did you find what was leaking coolant? Where did you order the parts?
Yes, so the gasket between the oil cooler and mounting plate was hard and had some spots where coolant was sneaking through. Also the shaft running through the coolant bypass valve is a contributor. Part numbers are listed in the video description, I used FCP euro for all the parts.
@@driventofailure Thank you! Mine is 2015 with 260k km and it has been having exact same symptoms for some time. I went to install new winter tires last week and I asked the guy to see if he can find the leak. He said it is a pierced radiator as he pressure tested it,
I doubt that and I believe I have the same issue.
How long it took approximately for this job..?
About 5 hours for me, cleaning the valley and intake manifold took a little time beyond just the wrenching.
The dealers will charge 10+ hours
Would it be the same or similar for the A6 tdi?
I can't say with certainty, maybe there are some A6 videos or you could check the audi parts site to see what the assembly/parts look like 👍
GREAT and highly informative video /.
What would you say is the average amount of time to do this repair?
Nice vid. I'll use this to tackle mine.
Shit, that means my Q7 will eventually develop this ailment too. What mileage does this usually happens at?
All I can say is that I'm at 125k miles, anything more would be speculative 🤘🏻
I had mine start at 129k
Mine got to 325K
great video, thanks.
very nice video.
@@driventofailure my light only comes on when its almost empty tho, but then its good for months so very wierd
thx great video
My 2012 has a small drip that hits the drive way. Not loosing enough to worry about it yet……but o I’m
Going thru about 300 ml of oil every 2k miles.
I think the main purpose is to warm up the engine A.S.A.P.
Great posting and presentation of the work. I have a 2014 Audi Q7 TDI, I'm sure I'll be doing the same or the dealer since it is still under Diesel-gate warranty. Wheres your garage, maybe I'll bring it you. 👍
It’s not covered under the diesel gate warranty
@@rthilson I just had it done at the dealership. No Charge, covered under the DieselGate Warranty...
@@mickeyolYour Audi dealership replaced the oil cooler and covered it under the diesel gate warranty? My dealership says EGR cooler is covered - oil cooler is not covered. Maybe I need to go to your dealership :)
