The sound of this wonderful instrument is very French, indeed, and Mr. Filsell is a most impressive artist. I love Vierne and, with the embracing acoustic of the room, this performance is divine.
You have to listen to Filsell's CDs with all six Vierne symphonies on the Cavaillé-Coll organ of the collegiate church St. Ouen in Rouen (Normandy) - I think it is still available.
The genre of the symphony for organ is due to French organists-composers at the end of the XIXth Century. Manufactured by Aristide Cavaillé-Coll, their organ was indeed "symphonic". So, they preferred to name "symphonies" rather than "sonatas" their vast works for organ, and indeed their length and various sonorities made the comparison with the orchestral symphony as reasonable as with the piano sonata. The main composers in that genre were Widor, then Vierne. They had both their own language and personality, even if the shadow of César Franck was over them. the music of Vierne explores often the limits of tonality, while keeping a clear tonal root. Jeremy Filsell is an excellent interpret. His registration choices are sometimes odd, but always justified.
All six in one day - what a feat! Have always loved this one with it's otherworldly, swirling, complex finale. Bravo!
Absolutely brilliant performance in every area of musicality .
Jeremy Filsell is really the master and the reference for the Vierne Symphonies.
