    Spider-Man is a superhero appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. Created by writer-editor Stan Lee and artist Steve Ditko, he first appeared in the anthology comic book Amazing Fantasy #15 (August 1962) in the Silver Age of Comic Books. He has been featured in comic books, television shows, films, video games, novels, and plays.
    Spider-Man's secret identity is Peter Benjamin Parker, a teenage high school student and an orphan raised by his Aunt May and Uncle Ben in New York City after his parents Richard and Mary Parker died in a plane crash. Lee and Ditko had the character deal with the struggles of adolescence and financial issues and gave him many supporting characters, such as Flash Thompson, J. Jonah Jameson, and Harry Osborn; romantic interests Gwen Stacy, Mary Jane Watson, and the Black Cat; and enemies such as the Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, and Venom. In his origin story, Spider-Man gets his superhuman spider-powers and abilities after being bitten by a radioactive spider; these include superhuman strength, agility, reflexes, stamina, durability, coordination, and balance, clinging to surfaces and ceilings like a spider, and detecting danger with his precognition ability called "spider-sense". He builds wrist-mounted "web-shooter" devices that shoot artificial spider-webs of his own design, which he uses both for fighting and for web-swinging across the city. Peter Parker originally used his powers for his own personal gain, but after his Uncle Ben was killed by a thief that Peter could not stop, he began to use his powers to fight crime by becoming Spider-Man.
    When Spider-Man first appeared in the early 1960s, teenagers in superhero comic books were usually relegated to the role of sidekick to the protagonist. The Spider-Man comic series broke ground by featuring Peter Parker, a high school student from Queens, New York, as Spider-Man's secret identity, whose "self-obsessions with rejection, inadequacy, and loneliness" were issues to which young readers could relate.[8] While Spider-Man was a quintessential sidekick, unlike previous teen heroes Bucky Barnes and Robin, Spider-Man had no superhero mentor like Captain America and Batman; he had learned the lesson for himself that "with great power comes great responsibility"-a line included in a text box in the final panel of the first Spider-Man's origin story, but later retroactively attributed to the late Uncle Ben Parker.
    Spider-Man is one of the most popular and commercially successful superheroes.[10] He has appeared in countless forms of media, including several animated TV series: the first original animated series Spider-Man, with Paul Soles voicing the titular character, a live-action television series, syndicated newspaper comic strips, and multiple series of films. Spider-Man was first portrayed in live-action by Danny Seagren in Spidey Super Stories, a recurring skit on The Electric Company from 1974 to 1977.[11] In live-action films, Spider-Man has been portrayed by actors Tobey Maguire in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy, by Andrew Garfield in two films directed by Marc Webb,[12] and in the Marvel Cinematic Universe by Tom Holland. Reeve Carney originally starred as Spider-Man in the 2010 Broadway musical Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark.[13] Spider-Man was also voiced by Jake Johnson and Chris Pine in the animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Spider-Man has been well-received as a superhero and comic book character; he is often ranked as one of the most popular and iconic comic book superheroes of all time and in all of fiction.

      I'm saying. I'm also wondering, with that 6 figure budget, why not hire local professionals to help with this film and make it half the length? I was really taken out of it by the lack of simple things like consistent production design and detailed art direction. Things that make movies feel like movies. The way it was shot is also very inconsistent. Sometimes the composition and lighting is great, then sometimes out of nowhere it feels like they ran out of time and just had to get the shot with no real thought behind it. It's obvious most of the budget was spent on VFX.

      I think that's Lotus's biggest weak point tbh. There are times when it feels like a fan film trying a little to hard to be a movie that you'd see in theaters (the mentality that some people had of "this is what a spider-man movie should be" definitely doesn't help with that vibe). I feel like the people involved could have started off with Lotus as like, a jumping off point or something and then sharpened their filmmaking skills onward. This is, of course, taking all the controversy out of the equation.

      Harboring hate for norman doesn't automatically make peter obvlivious as to why harry didn't want to go. If it portrayed peter being intentionally ignorant then it'll make more sense. He just comes off as tone-deaf, especially when Harry actually mentions that his dad died and Peter looks suprised like he forgot that the guy who killed his girlfriend is actually Harry's dad.
      If it made peter out to be hateful to the point he intentionally ignores that norman was Harry's dad, then cool. Sadly the writers and Peter's actor couldn't pull it off.

      I also prefer MCU SpiderMan. And speaking of mature and serious, the struggles that Peter, MJ, and Harry were going through was the same as shonwn in comics and other media. The difference is that comics and movies never showed them in detail. So the fan film just showed much more depth for that. SpiderMan may seem silly but underneath that mask are pains and sacrifices that has has to endure while being a hero.

  • @asomewhatdecentperson9190
    @asomewhatdecentperson9190 ปีที่แล้ว +36

    For all of Gavin’s claims that MCU doesn’t understand Spider-Man. Gavin fundamentally misunderstands what Spider-Man is in the first fight with Shocker.
    In that fight, Peter uses criminals as human shields against Shocker… **Shocker** of all people. Versus Homecoming in which Peter is spying on the weapons deal between Prowler and Shockers 1 & 2. His phone rings and Prowler gets blamed for it and gets a gun pulled on him. Peter, despite knowing Prowler wanted those illegal gear. Immediately blows his cover. And says “If you’re gonna shoot at anyone. Shoot at me!”
    Not to mention the aforementioned Peter and MJ talk at the graveyard. Conceptually its lifted from the aftermath of Gwen’s death and MJ going to comfort Peter. Peter is of course grief stricken and angry at everything. But what works there and not in Lotus is that theres a passage of time between Gwen’s death and their encounter. In the comics, it’s literally right after. And Peter is less directly harsh at MJ and more just pushing her away emotionally. And MJ’s response there is to simply not leave, comforting Peter when he’s at his lowest point. In Lotus, Peter berates MJ and MJ later apologizes to Peter. I have never seen someone fundamentally miss the point of a critical moment of the comics like Gavin did.

    The writing does show their inexperience when they monologue or even in some of the the dialogue. I understand why some people didn't like how bleak it was but Gwen just essentially died and for Harry his father just died so I took it basically as this happened like a week ago and these characters aren't okay hence why Peter goes off on Mj because he wants to be alone and Mj is asking him to party when his fiance just died it is incredibly tone deaf. With how much angst is in that scene just shows it was written by a teenager because teens tend to gravitate towards angst. Peter is also being a jerk to harry because Norman was the green goblin that and its well known Norman saw Harry as a disappointment but that scene was definitely stupid because now Peter went from somewhat justifiable in his anger to as stupid and tone deaf like Mj

      I'm talking about if the movie shows action in a scene. What does it imply for the characters?
      Like, what if that car in the beginning almost hit an old lady walking over the street, and Spider-man swoops in to save her and tries to stop the vehicle by being smart.
      Like these things would've enhanced and had more impact when Tim was talking to Spider-Man about saving people.

    • @TheTreyVision
      @TheTreyVision ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@gracekim25 in my opinion no matter how young Peter or whoever Spider-Man is, I believe there should be a certain level of drama, tragedy, & consequence the character must go through and experience. The MCU largely tamped down this aspect of the character for 2 1/2 movies in favor of appeasing audiences to how fun and young SpiderMan is. Rather than then really developing the character Peter as a person and hero like some of the other mcu characters.
      I mean everyone is laughing at this statement but Miles is roughly the same age and everyone praised spider verse which has the right amount of drama and conflict for a SpiderMan story. There’s no denying the mcu definitely dumb down aspects of Peter and then at the last minute said “it’s been is origin the whole time & now he’s actually SpiderMan” !
      Overall like I said, it’s all about balance. The mcu started on one end to try and separate from earlier adaptations that the character wasn’t fully relatable and Gavin with his film went so far in the opposite direction that it’s a sad and boring experience.
      Spider-Man is a great character and everyone has their favorite version. But there is a base level of balance between Fun/Cool/ young & Dramatic/ Traumatic/ & Emotionally Heavy that is the character of Spider-Man.

Peter stopped being spider man for a reason and the thing with Peter not causing hope for the kid is we all see spider man as this larger than life person but he is far from perfect, he's human and he makes mistakes but spider man fans like Timmy only see him as Spider-Man. I'm not saying Peter is justified for going off at mj, Harry, Timmy but the thing is he made a mistake and we all have and Timmy's mother made Peter realize that he was wrong this whole time and made him see the error of his ways and Timmy inspired Peter because Peter inspired him. Timmy reminded Peter that the spider man means something to everyone and he realized his selfishness and he rectified it

    I felt like Peter being the way he was toward MJ and Harry was the point. Also, I really don't think Peter would have considered Norman having died considering that he's the one who killed Gwen in the first place. In his mind, Norman is the Goblin and nothing else. As far as Timmy's room. Peter trauma dumping on the kid was, in Peter's self-hatred-addled mind, probably a kindness. He even brings up other heroes in an attempt to get Timmy to stop wasting what little time he had left idolizing Spider-Man. And then when Timmy and his mom remind him of why he does what he does, the turnaround feels that much more satisfying. At least to me

    Dreary, ugly misery porn: the movie.
    This is a case study in everything not to do as a first-time filmmaker. A young, arrogant, spiteful fanboy raised an irresponsible amount of money, used it irresponsibly, and produced something unwatchable. The sheer ego-centrism wafting out of this thing is staggering. I had to finish it in THREE sittings because it was just so poorly paced and drab.
    When people pull the "listen to fans/let fans run things" bullshit, show them this travesty. This is the biggest case fans not knowing what they're doing or what makes a good film ever. For that, I applaud it.
    I was only somewhat familiar with the history of this thing. Considering the age of the creators involved I was willing to overlook the bigotry controversy as possibly just teenagers being stupid and ignorant. Maybe over the course of the experience making the film they matured and grew up. But after struggling to get through this turd I looked into the history of this thing more and more and was appalled at its inception.
    Every. Single. Stage. of this films creation was spawned by wrong-headed fanboy entitlement. End of story. Some jumped up teenager with delusions of grandeur thinking his status as a "real fan" could produce a better film that what the professionals are making. If anyone sympathizes with this attitude then...good for you I guess? You and the kid who made this deserve each other I guess...
    I don't give a shit about "oh it's a fan film you gotta forgiving of certain aspects" no. Stop that noise. I've seen enough fan films to know that the reality of something being a fan film is not enough of an excuse anymore. There are TON of fan films with above average production values. The amount of endless, dragged out establishing shots in this thing were almost humorous. They felt like a joke after a while. Basic film language is broken and ignored constantly. You ain't Spielberg kid, you can't just ignore the 180 rule so flippantly...
    The entire conceit around this film was born out of sheer spite and fanboy entitlement. The racist controversy aside, this is 2hrs of poorly directed misery porn. I honestly judge anyone who comes away liking this thing.

      Thank freaking you for calling this all out. I knew this movie would never be a masterpiece of a film or a masterpiece of a Spider-Man movie in the end. Like seriously, that would honestly just be pathetic if Gavin(a freaking 18 year old who is still inexperience of filmmaking)literally made Spider-Man Lotus just so he could try to prove that he somehow "understands" Spider-Man "objectively better" than Jon Watts(a professional filmmaker) just because he dislike MCU Spider-Man. Like dude, obviously everyone has the right to voice their opinions on movies they like or dislike, I don't not care if he dislikes the MCU and it's version of Spider-Man, but for him to make a fan film just to prove to someone that he is better than him is just so childish. And now look at the other reviews of his fan film on the internet, especially on TH-cam now, most people dislike the film and they do have very good criticisms to it.

    • @AnimationStation196
      @AnimationStation196 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don’t think this had anything to do with him genuinely disliking John Watts at all. He’s gone on to say he enjoyed some of Johns films from the Spider-Man trilogy. The thesis for this film was to create a narrative that explored Peter’s grief and sides of his character previously unseen from recent depictions (his anger and tendency to lash out after a tragedy). The MJ cemetery scene having its dialogue lifted straight from the comics page. So I wouldn’t say this interpretation as inaccurate, but at times can feel almost mean spirited compared to how Tom’s Spider-Man has been in his recent films. Peter in the comics is a deeply flawed individual and can be driven to unloading all of his emotions at someone, them more often than not be undeserving of it. What I see a lot of people leave out is Peter’s genuine guilt at how he acted towards MJ the next time they speak. It may not have been the best delivery, but the intention was there.

    I think it was alright how the story was executed, but all I was reminded of was how a maturity in the story doesn’t come just from its tone (here, it’s the absolute bleakness of the characters lives at that moment),
    But how it is handled.
    Now, this is a more mature story than let’s say, Spider-Man beating up villain of the week, but it isn’t necessarily more mature than let’s say No Way Home. Yes, one is absolutely more grounded and the other is very Hollywood super hero stuff, but both stories aren’t necessarily tackling more mature stories over one another.
    Being perceived as mature is not the same as being mature.
    This story didn’t HAVE to be this bleak, or this long to effectively convey its emotions and message. This vision of Peter is interesting, but it comes down to the execution.
    But, it’s not bad.

    To me the movie felt very bland and it didn’t help that it was 2 hours long I feel like u can cut out the Harry B plot the movie would’ve been paced better. The biggest problem I have with it is that’s it’s unoriginal I’ve noticed parts that I have seen from other Spider-Man media: Green Goblin giving a monologue to a battle damaged Spider-Man; Raimi, Peter watching a news report about Gwen and Normans deaths; MCU, Peter watching a video on his laptop about memories with Gwen; TASM2. It really tries to be the most comic accurate portrayal of Spider-Man by flexing its knowledge of moments of Spider-Man history that it ends up not having an identity of its own. The ending contradicts itself by having its cake and eating it too with Peter realizing Spider-Man means something to ppl and needs to spend more time with his friends but he ditches to be Spider-Man. If u really wanted an adaption of the “Kid who collects Spider-Man” just watch the 90s animated episode, this movie shouldn’t be the benchmark of what a Spider-Man fan film should be

    Tbh, I didn't really like Lotus, and I think that's more or less due to the fact that I tend to really dislike overly-dark superhero things. Idk, they almost always overstay their welcome for me. That being said, this is more of a me thing than an actual criticism of the movie.
    I will say, there are definitely a few writing choices in Lotus that I actually thought were kind of good, but it does definitely feel like it's their first time writing a script, but I suppose that's kind of unavoidable. I feel like its main issue is that it's trying too hard to seem like a "professional movie," what with the runtime and the whole vibe of it, if that makes any sense. Tbh, I find the discussion around Lotus to be more interesting than the movie itself.
    I will say though, despite some of my more personal grievances regarding stuff like the Spider-man fandom (which I've grown very annoyed with over the past few years), I do actually feel a bit bad for this movie because it's clear that a fair amount of passion went into it, and the final product is being so heavily crapped on as of right now. As someone who is aspiring to work in the film business, that's a feeling I can't help but sympathize/empathize with that.

    I think the movie was OK. It wasn’t anything amazing, but it did what it was trying to do.
    That being said, I think the biggest problem with the movie is basically what you said about it feeling supplementary. I think it felt like the sequel to another film that doesn’t exist. This story needed something before it that gets us familiar with the relationships between this version of Peter and his friends. Gwen’s death didn’t feel as impactful and the way they acted didn’t feel right because we just didn’t know these characters well enough from before this film. I don’t think there was room in this to include it in this, but at the very least, some kind of prelude was needed to establish everything. The opening scenes aren’t enough to do that effectively.
    Also, I just find The Kid that Collects Spider-Man very bizarre. Why would Spider-Man license himself out, and how would he even go about doing that with his secretly identity involved?! It’s pretty obvious these aren’t intended to he bootlegs, so what’s going on here?!

    *Hey Pup, I got a question. I respect that you have some principals that I assume are there because you understand the struggle of independent filmmaking. I however think I disagree with your overall methods. Could you elaborate a bit?
    I would assume that most creators are welcoming to your critiques, as even a negative review would still put eyes on your project. But I do wonder, what would you do if a creator did not like certain critiques you made, would you scrap the entire project or would you edit around those sections that they had expressed concern with? Does that not limit the freedom you hold to express your thoughts to your audience? I assume you would never hold this standard with a studio film, as running your critiques through them before airing would essentially make it a promotion, why do you feel differently about independent fan films?
    I am genuinely curious on your thoughts if you have a few moments*

    I'm a film student and the main issues I noticed was:
    - Lack of characterization for MJ. She just serves to be a glue and she shows no struggle really. She's characterized worse than Kirsten Dunst's Mary Jane. Peter rudely lashes out at her for something we never saw.
    - Cutting around too much from different shots. That's quite a common rookie filmmaker mistake because we want to show all the cool shots we got, but I noticed many times he could have let a shot run longer than he did. He could have definitely saved 20 or so minutes in the edit if he removed useless transitions and given the film a more potent feel.
    - Overuse of music in certain areas.
    - The writing is extremely segmented in chapters and should have been released as episodes or blocked off in chapters in the film itself. This is kind of obvious with how long and overbearing the whole part with the kid is. It's so exhausting in the runtime.

    Before all else, a Spiderman movie should be fun, ingeresting, and not boring. This fails at that on a fundamental level.

    I really enjoyed this movie Gavin has potential as a director. It felt more like an art piece than a Spiderman movie but that is what made me love it because I always hated the fact in Spiderman movie they never focused on his grief and this movie gave me what I wanted. I also liked that Peter was kinda a d*ckhead anytime I see that version of Peter I get happy because Spiderman hasn't always been a nerd in the comics

    • @CometStar100
      @CometStar100 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      100% agreed! Gavin has a bright future as a director if the controversy doesn't follow him forever. Theres also so much misinformation out there and people still don't think he apologized so I am not sure whats in store for Gavin when it comes to being in the film industry. A big youtuber really needs to do a video and clear the air about everything that happened with Gavin and Warden.

      Gavin has potential, but i beg for him to fix the pacing of his next movies and the editing of the film, i liked Lotus, it has some quality here and there but it needed to flesh more the characters and put more focus on it without making boring

    This movie is bad in a lot of ways, but the most damning is that it’s just plain boring. A nearly two hour superhero film with less than 5 minutes of action is already a big ask, but if the character drama sings then the movie can work in spite of that.
    Here though, all the drama is banal and forced, the characterization is shit, and if the writing isn’t letting the actors down then the actors are letting the writing down. It’s just real Not Good the whole way through.

    Imo i feel like A-list production's (the guy who made a DC fanfilm called Superman Solar) did a better fanfilm than Gavin did. Superman Solar is shorter and is also a drama but imo it got its story better.
    Alist also got accused of being republican and supporting Donald Trump but i havent really seen extreme controversy with Alist.

    I think not having a villain is really to the detriment of this movie. A villain gives the hero agency, a reason to keep doing this. The villain can also contribute to the moral struggle of the hero. They can bring out something the hero thought they didn't have in them, or challenge the hero's world view and makes them question things. A villain also makes a good, climactic ending. This movie needed a villain, but it just got misery.

    The movie had a good story idea, yes good not the best not the greatest not amazing it's good.
    But the problem with the story... It's confused on what it wants to be, 1 hour in and we are still watching peter starring blankly in the air contemplating the death of Gwen, an hour in but the story is still not progressing. It would have been bare able if it wasn't just actors starring blankly in the air over and over and over again.
    The scenes where dependent on the viewer knowing spiderman as a character since most of the scenes where placed on top of each other without proper context, so it would have been better if they established Gwen's death in the start of the movie and move forward towards petter grief in a better way, they could show the effects of the death in a lot of ways instead of all the blank stares.. they could have placed and progress this story In a better way.
    I know that this aren't Hollywood actors but Harry's actor was just dull on some parts, but in the end most of them had a good scene or 2.
    The good things.
    Costume.
    The tim story, could have been executed better though, that story had a potential, its a great story grounding peter and Spidey back on the ground.
    And my most favorite part of the movie... The montage of Peter and Gwen having a fun together... It was just humanizing, seeing peter and Gwen do the casual things a person do along with their partner and friends in the normal world, it was just a good POV for once
