- This was an interesting extra on the 'Brian Cox's Jute Journey' DVD. The synopsis according to the jacket of the DVD is as follows:
"Dundee" (1939, b/w). The City of Dundee, its people and industries: jute, jam and journalism. Premiered at a meeting of the British Association in Dundee, September 1939, the screening was abandoned midway owing to the declaration of war.
Director: Donald Alexander. Produced for the Films of Scotland Committee, Courtesy National Library of Scotland" - บันเทิง
I am born & bred in Dundee. Lived in many places in the UK & Europe through circumstances in my life. That was thee most wonderful wonderful recollection of my city of many TH-cam videos I have watched. Thank you. 👍
I lived in Dundee for a year and a half and loved it. Thank you for sharing…
My grandfather and great-grandparents were born in Dundee in the 1800s.
Being married to a Dundonian lass for 25 years, we come up a couple of times a year and it's good to see how Dundee has improved in that time. 😊
This is joyous...thank you so very much for unearthing it...I wonder if the 'Cast' were members of the Dundee Dramatic Society at the ttime?...some of our current video-makers could learn a great deal by watching how it could be done in 1939...dgp
I grew up in Dundee in late 60s to mid 70s. We still had the 3Js then. I remember the gang culture too. Still go back on occasion, and always have a Peh and a Bridie as soon as I arrive.
Very good film.. amazing it all changed from 1939 to 2023
A great find Well done.
The jute stowers throwing the bales about as if they were marshmallow weights?
Seen the arch thing that isnt there anymore, there are stones marking where it was. Nice old car.
Jute, jam, journalism and junkies now the four J’s
town planners ruined dundee
Dundee had the best preserved medieval street plan in the whole of scotland with the overgate
it was flattened in the 1960's to make way for a banal shopping block.
this was done intentionally
The Overgate was a slum
Dundee, nothing changed.
But for Tory Government "manipulation" of boundaries in the 70's Dundee would still be Scotland's third largest city.
What a sad misplaced comment.... Dundee can never fail????
