MV is superb. I liked the song but it was so unexpected for Taeyeon. This is such a vibe unlike her previous songs which are mostly emotional and ballad. This is a song I'd expect from Tiffany. But it's Taeyeon though, she pulls off everything.
This is why it's good. Each Taeyeon era/song is always different. Why was more into Tropical House, Something New is R&B Jazz, I was kinda rock, don't even know for the amazing I Got Love. She always does different genres... and always gets it perfectly... damn. And her b-sides?? U R, Fashion, Eraser and here Circus. No words. I'm so in loveeee omg
Actually, if you consider what Taeyeon has made so far, she hasn't pulled out one "identical" feel title track just yet. I, why, fine, This Christmas and something new are completely unique
Everyone's saying that the luggages were Taeyeon's struggles, pain, and other emotional stuff but I... I thought the luggages held dead bodies and Taeyeon was going to yeet the evidence into the ocean... and the worst part was that I was ready to accept it so casually... y'all are so smart while I'm here being BooBoo the Fool
On the mv: 1. This is Taeyeon to SM and SM to Taeyeon. 2. This is whom Red Velvet inherited their killing skills. On Taeyeon: As expected of Taeyeon, she never disappoints as a singer. Not even a single bad song from her latest EP. Not even a genre that won't fit her voice. So proud that she keeps on experimenting and growing. She may be small but she's big!
If you haven't listened to the b sides then I recommend that you do, they are all solid tracks. Baram x 3 is probably my favourite, it's got that groove.
Circus was one of the easier to ear songs, but EVERY single song on this album is gold. I LOVE Baram x 3 it's SO GOOD. I really cannot decide which song I like the most.
mainly, Taeyon's song emphasize on her vocal. so she need to literally " something new" when i watched this video as you mentioned, it remind me of Queen's another one dust bite or Stones miss you. its new try to them. her vocal &mood seems like breeze in this MV. yes~! MV is weired because it's very dangerous situation. its not match MV well. its kind of experiment. throwing all suitcases and fighting means i guess its sign of her will to get out of the pressure for her fans expectation or her reputation she have achieved.
We can be brave to say that Taeyeon has that feelings into all her MVs, she pulls all the genres from Rock vibes, RnB vibes, EDM vibes and many more. She's such a multifungsional masterpiece singer, no wonder why so many producers want to work with Taeyeon. She did it! 💯
Definitely agree with you on needing to be in a specific mood to really get into the song - not something I'd play during the day tbh. Props to Taeyeon for pushing her boundaries yet again.
im absolutely falling for taeyeon this comeback, i love the music video cinematography it is so so gorgeous and i love the chorus that just gets you grooving and the sole bass parts that make you feel like a badass hitman. i just love it
Alright. Not sure if it's the Taeyeon or the R&B trash side of me, but I loved this the instant it dropped. I am addicted to the song and the MV though it all passes in a second and I have to keep it on repeat. this is mainly one of the reasons I love SM, just when I say they can't surprise me more they literally improve their camera angels a thousand times, don't even get me started on the music quality, I extra love this because it shows how Tae has grown as an artist and because it feels genuine to her real self after what happened and what we know about her mental health. I will keep crying over and over as many times as I watch this. For those perhaps wondering what this means it's probably about her depression and the hardship she has gone through being an idol for more than ten years now: The first scene is fame glamour, fans and admiration. -the elevator scene is her taking the luggage by force and paving her own path, you see, she is the one that initiated the fight this time. -the maid scene is the bitter and sweet of life, hence the cupcakes and the cake in the first two plates, the third plate is perhaps depression? I figured it was like haters and death threat she has recommended, but because this time she does not initiate the fight, I had to settle on depression at the end because she slaps the maid who then snaps out of it kind of. -she is now taking all of the luggage, the fame the money and the feelings and bottled inside of her, shoots it all and tries to run from it -the last scene is depressing, she sees herself running but she can't escape from it because she made her choice and quitting when she's this far up in the game isn't really a choice. My analysis is shabby but I tried. Tell me your perspectives though because I most definitely missed something
That sensitive psychopath here are some nuances I gathered. First scenes in the car with Taeyeon upset then leaving the car as if nothing is wrong shows how she must project a positive image to the public as a celebrity. When she enters the hotel and someone approaches her to sign her name she reluctantly signs what is presented in front of her, not having time to think. She is resentful - breaks the pen; and angry - clenches fist - as she gets into the elevator. The business suited man in the elevator, I think, represents someone (SM) who is supposed to be by her side but nervously knows he will have to make her do something she doesn’t want to do, hence the the focus on his sweat. Before he can do anything, the fight scene is bathed in shades of pink seemingly giving Taeyeon courage to continue to release her anger by further attacking this person even though the hammer missed its mark and though she fights him, he still forces her to take baggage out of the elevator. A flash of pink shade briefly appears to surround her as she drags the baggage to her suite. The maid that comes in with room service, I think, represents strangers and “Trojan horses” bearing gifts who have often attacked Taeyeon as a celebrity. A flash of pink shade again appears when she strikes the maid successfully shocking this stranger, and for the moment stops the attack. These are the only times in the video where shades of pink appear which I think represent SONE -the pink ocean of SNSD and her fandom - who lovingly over a decade have been with Taeyeon and SNSD. SONE give her courage to stand up to show her anger when she is forced to do things she doesn’t want to do as a celebrity, give her strength to drag the baggage of celebrity life accepting its burden, and finally give her the confidence to stand up and defend herself from people who harm her. The luggage in the truck is the baggage she has accumulated as a celebrity and she wants something new in her life so she tries to destroy this baggage, rid herself and run away from it. However, she realizes as she watches herself on the TV that as someone in the public eye she’ll have to keep running, I think, even when the colorful bright lights of fame fade to black and white as a non celebrity. This is the bitter costs she pays to do the only thing she wants to do and that is to sing for people who want to hear her sing. Btw there is even a call out to Tiffany, her very close friend who has helped Taeyeon deal with the baggage she has gathered in the truck. There is a sticker in the back window of the truck with Tiffany’s birthdate - 801. Additionally the shades of pink added with a bit of blue (one of Taeyeon’s favorite colors) blend into a light purple hue (another of her favorite colors). These are the times representing the moments when she sheds her celebrity persona to be her true self. This MV is a gift from Taeyeon to her fans and is artistically saturated with symbolism. I think the message she wanted to convey was that even if her quest for something new doesn’t change the burdens of her celebrity life, she will find the resilience to keep going for a long time as a famous singer because at the most dire times, the love of SONE engulfs her so she can find the courage, strength and confidence to return to her true self.
She's just awesome and everything she releases is gold! Maybe it's her voice maybe it's something else, but I can never not like a taeyeon song and/or music video! Also I can't choose a favorite among her releases because she switches genre for every comeback and they're all sooo good! Or maybe I'm just biased, hehe, who knows! :D
I like it more the second time/ this time listening to it then I did the first time. A couple more listens and it'll really grow on me I think. I might also have been more distracted by the mv the first time around. I often need to watch the mv and just listen seperately to get a better opinion about a song. I need to check out the whole album.
So much love for Taeyeon as a solo artist! This is "Something New" while shot as if it was something old. The camera work was so off beat at times it's very interesting. Also shout out to ReacttotheK! Awesome channel.
This may sound random but I cried at the first listen of something new. And the MV. Oh my god..the meaning behind it is what got me. The murder scenes are in black and white to simbolize that those are only her imagination. Honestly when I read Taeyeon's lyrics or her interviews about how she feel of herself makes me love her more. I suffer from the same things and I relate on a spiritual level. Her music is what makes me smile when I'm sad. (Sorry for my bad English)
I REALLY REALLY love this comeback. It's really something new (see what I did there ;)) for her but honestly everything Taeyeon does is art. The whole ep is just great and every song is so unique ESPECIALLY Baram X 3 which is my favorite song on the ep.
That's really something new and I'm surprised in a positive way. If the song is related to her own life (and it is what I read) than she said more than you can see in this MV. Anger, depression, life change, enter a new world, the hate against her. I love her even more (if this is possible).
taeyeon is the love of my life and to know that she just doesnt give a single fuck about general public interest is so amusing to me..yet shes still charting very well??? she just never stops amazing me and this warms my heart to no end. i hope that she will keep growing as an artist. and as much as i want her to do well, i just want her to do music that makes her happy. side note: at 0:59 when she looks out of her window, did anyone notice that it looks like a chain outside her window?
She's fantastic though right? For me Taeyeon's "I" was one of the first kpop MV's I can remember watching. Because before that I never really payed much attention to kpop, but I really just needed something exceptionally good to hook me on it. I can't even remember why I gave it a watch out of the blue, but I still to this day think that MV is the most beautiful MV I have ever seen, not to mention how fantastic the song is. I was instantly hooked on Taeyeon from that moment and slowly warmed up to kpop over the years since then.
Seeing your reaction to this really made me remember Suzy's Yes no Maybe, and how you'd definitely be intrigued by that video and song too. Also you'll really get something different from what you'd expect from an idol like suzy. Really interesting!
I love this song. This is going to sound real dumb, because I am a long time girls generation fan, but this is the song that made me realise how good she is. It’s like I saw her in a whole new light and realised her versatility, like you said, because her discography is so varied. It made me go back and listen to her other songs and look up the lyrics.
The mv has that kind of classic noir feel with some Kill Bill homage (the maid in particular was clearly a descent of Gogo Yubari) and some obvious crime motifs like the suitcases and the barrel gun. It’s a very interesting theme that complements well with the mood of the song. But what stuns me in this mix-up of inspired homages and neo soul groove, is how the lyrics and the mv goes hand-in-hand to enhance the song’s artistic meaning, which is quite rare to find amongst the commercialised aesthetic of K-pop. What I interpreted from “Something New” is a triptych of messages-one that involves a personal fragment of Taeyeon’s life, the lyrical meaning of the song, and a suggestive commentary about technology. All of these messages are rounded by a unifying theme: breaking outside the norm and doing something new. I wanted to delve into this more but the yt comments section does not let me speak in blocks of senseless paragraphs, but this is honestly Taeyeon’s best music video since the chiaroscuro-inspired “11:11”. Not to mention, the song’s a major bop too!!
I'm surprised PD didn't notice all the symbolism in the MV. The whole thing was a metaphor for the struggles she faced in her music career--anti-fans, death threats, the duality of glamour and harsh reality, and how she entered without any baggage but left with so many and had to throw them away.
There have been descriptions that said the mv is meant to present something that normally isn’t showed and it’s of someone’s inner conflicts as well as their worries. Also the song was said to encourage others to seek individuality in the society where everything is uniform.
I’m pretty sure she talk about she feel so alone she said in the interview that’s why you see she cried with mascara and the background black and white she said she feels so alone when she’s popular in korea
There is an interesting theory that said that the service people of the hotel represent Taeyon's depression that attack her when she is alone but she always know when it's coming so she is always prepared and that's why she got the luggage.
At 0.14 I thought, oh no is this going be to another “whoever broke Taeyeon’s heart deserves a beat down” video? Next few seconds put that worry to rest! 😄
I feel like this is an IU kind of song. She could have done this kind of concept and genre and rocked it (and perhaps she would be the only one in the kpop industry rn). But OMG. This suits Taeyeon really well even if its unexpected
Kill Bill Taeyeon edition
Exactly what i thought!!!
Yesss especially room scene!! It is like Black Mamba vs Gogo battle scene
it's "Something New"
@@lapommehs You predicted Aespa debut song omfg-
@@seulmiseforever9603 my sixth sense was strong back then hahahaha
MV is superb. I liked the song but it was so unexpected for Taeyeon. This is such a vibe unlike her previous songs which are mostly emotional and ballad. This is a song I'd expect from Tiffany. But it's Taeyeon though, she pulls off everything.
Monkey D. Momo agree
I think she really wants to say somethin to haters
This is why it's good. Each Taeyeon era/song is always different. Why was more into Tropical House, Something New is R&B Jazz, I was kinda rock, don't even know for the amazing I Got Love. You could almost say it was.... Something New
Actually, if you consider what Taeyeon has made so far, she hasn't pulled out one "identical" feel title track just yet. I, why, fine, This Christmas and something new are completely unique
Antoine Bouchet I'd say IGL was somewhat cabaret-ish ☺
Honestly I don't think the theme of this MV is really murder. I think it's about mental health and social pressure.
Social pressure yes ! And some good dose of imagination/hallucination 🤔😅
right!
definitely a lot of symbolism
I agree. It’s not just murder. It has darker meaning to it.
Annika Ylimartimo I agree!
1:02 "oh wow this bass" SAME 🔥
When Taeyeon got out of the car I thought for a second he was going to say "oh wow this babe" but was completely wrong
Everyone's saying that the luggages were Taeyeon's struggles, pain, and other emotional stuff but I... I also thought they were bodies...
Sometimes I get bored of kpop but then it’s people like Taeyeon that gotta change the game 🔥
valentine I feel the same
valentine ikr, kinda bored with all edm song from kpop group nowadays..
I disagree
valentine this

That bass tho. I can see myself grooving to this song a lot
I really love this comeback for taeyeon it suits her so well
The song is within the genre of neo-soul. I absolutely love it! Taeyeon never disappoints me!
If the baggage represents negative stuff she experience from before and now then those things are trying to kill her, but shes fighting it.
Definitely agree with you on needing to be in a specific mood to really get into the song - not something I'd play during the day tbh. Props to Taeyeon for pushing her boundaries yet again.
The recommendation to watch ReacttotheK in terms of music, for some reason, made me happy lmfaooo

im absolutely falling for taeyeon this comeback, i love the music video cinematography it is so so gorgeous and i love the chorus that just gets you grooving and the sole bass parts that make you feel like a badass hitman. i just love it

From I Got Love to this ugh Taeyeon is so powerful
I didn't expect this! Thank you so much for reacting to our queen
I was not expecting this but taeyeon always surprise us, she is a great artist as you said, loved the song and mv

I honestly felt like the song and the mv is so Taeyeon. Raw Taeyeon
watching your videos are sooo calming thank youuu

God this song will forever be so iconic
I REALLY REALLY love this comeback. It's really something new (see what I did there ;)) for her but honestly everything Taeyeon does is art. The whole ep is just great and every song is so unique ESPECIALLY Baram X 3 which is my favorite song on the ep.
You kept talking about the bass but you forget to talk about how beautiful taeyeon voice is :")
Why bring up what is just undisputably OBVIOUS?
A whole song on this album is very good, her vocals on point!!
That's really something new and I'm surprised in a positive way. If the song is related to her own life (and it is what I read) than she said more than you can see in this MV. Anger, depression, life change, enter a new world, the hate against her. I love her even more (if this is possible).
that was my bae taeyeon always did a great job!!!
Yes taeyeon is the best
she should get in ocean's 8
Please listen to the whole mini!!! It’s amazing
HER WHOLE MINI REALLY IS SOMETHING NEW QUEEN TAEYEON DID THAT
taeyeon is the love of my life and to know that she just doesnt give a single fuck about general public interest is so amusing to me..yet shes still charting very well??? she just never stops amazing me and this warms my heart to no end. i hope that she will keep growing as an artist. and as much as i want her to do well, i just want her to do music that makes her happy.
side note: at 0:59 when she looks out of her window, did anyone notice that it looks like a chain outside her window?
PD I wish you checked out her entire album! It's been one year and I still find this album a masterpiece. You MUST at least check out the song Circus.
this was something new
PD are u gonna do a listening party for this?? cause it would be awesome if u did and the ep is amazing!!
The whole MV really gave me Kingsmen Vibes!
It sounded like you'd already seen Taeyeon's earlier stuff, but if you haven't, I would LOVE to see you react to her "I" MV.
I have!
"Classy murder music" I love it haha
I love how she was doing lives after she killed the guy
Seeing your reaction to this really made me remember Suzy's Yes no Maybe, and how you'd definitely be intrigued by that video and song too. Also you'll really get something different from what you'd expect from an idol like suzy. Really interesting!
I love this song. This is going to sound real dumb, because I am a long time girls generation fan, but this is the song that made me realise how good she is. It’s like I saw her in a whole new light and realised her versatility, like you said, because her discography is so varied. It made me go back and listen to her other songs and look up the lyrics.
I was waiting for this yaaaaas
QUEEN
THIS STYLE IS SO DOPE!!!!!
The black and white is represent Idol's real life.. and the coloured is what we see
There have been descriptions that said the mv is meant to present something that normally isn’t showed and it’s of someone’s inner conflicts as well as their worries. Also the song was said to encourage others to seek individuality in the society where everything is uniform.
DO CHECK OUT THE OTHER SONGS, LIKE BARAM WHERE THE WORD IS A PLAY ON WIND AND CHEATING

I just came to your video from reacttothek's because I wanted to hear both of your opinions

This definitely has an 'Ashanti' feel to this song in my opinion. Which I absolutely LOVE.
Yaay~ Taeyeon ❤
Listen to the whole album pleaseeeee

I'm the opposite. This song puts me in the mood. Got it on a loop today

I feel like this is an IU kind of song. She could have done this kind of concept and genre and rocked it (and perhaps she would be the only one in the kpop industry rn).
But OMG. This suits Taeyeon really well even if its unexpected
omegasage I agree, this is something IU would have also released
This song is so good. It was similar to IU's music.

“Great, classy murder music” is my kind of music.
