this is a fantastic sounding little amp that really does emulate the marshall jcm800 tone. it's one of three in the "vintage tube series" encore 65 @ 60 watts; rockmaster amp (not the preamp) @ 100 watts; and the huge roadmaster @ 160 watts with a fan on top to keep those 6- 6L6GC's chill. other great peavey sleepers: the original Butcher head; the VTM (vacuum tube modified); the Tri-Umph (especially the PAG series); the Ultra series; the little 25 watt Bravo 112 combo (killer little amp with el84 power section)
I ve heard you play several ss and tube peavey amps over the last few years. And rightfully so. You give a good solid dictive on them mostly to make viewers more aware of the pros and cons of amps you display. Its well worth the effort you make to do so. I thank you for your efforts and look ever forward to more of your info mercials on amps and tone.
You can build a significant difference in the tone and overdriven effects in this video. It plays very nice. I d more likely want to use it for a country and old style country rock of the years 70s and early 80s. It sounds like a good rendering of Led Zepplinish bass
I ve seen people who like the encore because of the pedal use. The mace is a monster of an amp. I d prefer it to the Encore. But, in reality if you use the mace you have to get an atteniator. Or windows and glass starts breaking. Its way to difficult to use unless your have practiced with it for a while. It s also hard on the ears, even with plugs or a long chord. It can be brutal. If you ve been playing for a while. You can dial down the Mace. But like I said. It s just much easier to use the Encore. the Mace is for the folks who have a place to play like I, out in the country. Once you get the attenuator though. Its a piece ofcake. With six tubes on the power section you can be heard for miles.
You can get a mace amp for a better price than most amps these days. But again the better tones and harmonics are in the high volume area. But, you can get an attenurator and be set for tone for years to come. They have a great tone base, albeit its with the master volume in the upper registers. you can take two tubes out and cut the volume in half and you can put a volume pot at the speaker but all in all if you were to get one the attenuator is the best not effected amp tone way to go.
So nice sounding I found one and made the purchase. 207.00 but totally worth it. Mine had the original scorpion speaker, you mention the govnor below, is that the speaker you installed? Thanks a bunch for the review.
Michael Blake I picked up a Governor speaker and it really sounds great. I had a Texas Heat but it was just not what I was looking for. Thanks for sharing what you installed. Love this little amp.
+Kevin Zent I got mine for $50 with power cutting-out issues. opened it up and found that the amp uses just one large circuit board (pre-amp and power-amp section mounted to the same board) with tube sockets mounted directly to the board. i guess from pushing the larger power tubes into their sockets enough pressure was put on the board that it cracked right through a B+ trace. i cleaned it up and jumped the trace - no more intermittent power issue and what a great sounding little amp. i used to read forums at harmony central a lot before they were purchased by guitar center and everybody over there seemed to think this amp sounded best with the original speaker.
Great amp. You need the footswitch- with the pump turned on the left knob does nothing for gain or volume, just bright. Also something is wrong with your reverb.
I have been on the look out for one of these on the local Craigslist. How did you decide on the Red Coat Speaker over the other options Eminence offers?
Tubes and a speaker aren't going to turn a Vox into a 5150. I tube rolled my Jet City 5012 with American OS and plugged it into an EV equipped Thiele - it's still a Chinese Soldano HR+.
@@rocketpigrecords3719 tubes and speakers certainly change the sound quite a bit. If I was reviewing a Strat, it wouldn't let the viewer know what a Strat sounds like if I had swapped the stock pickups for Pearly Gates beforehand. Admittedly that's a more extreme tone difference than what tubes and a speaker will do, but the point remains
Peavey still exists, but you should perhaps just take it to a local amp tech. Hope it gets fixed - old school Peavey is bombproof in good working order.
Blaken,the.......Could you do a country type progression for those of me who want to hear a country twang rock style I m looking at the encore now for lead
Without it, the pump circuit is never truly out. Switch it off to really pull the cleans out of the magic hat. Any 2-button footswitch with 1/4" plug will get it done.
Man I definitely agree with you. That's a damn good amplifier. It's definitely a hard rockers amp
I used one of these with a distortion pedal for all my shows in the 90s
I have one of these amps. Used it to gig with back in the mid 90s.

Aside the tubes position on the PAG, is there a tonal difference between the two Triumph versions?

JED TAYLOR Thanks so much! :)

JED TAYLOR peavey mace or peavey encore?

JED TAYLOR thanks I have the chance to one but have to choose between them and i have neighbors

Great amp. Does the amp only accept 4ohm speakers? Which version of the red coat did you use?

Kevin Zent Yes, and its well worth it, Enjoy this killer amp, they are fantastic an under the radar beauty!

Did you get the foot switch with it. With that, you can get the amp to act like a 2 channel amp
Which Redcoat?
It has different tubes and speaker than the stock, so...this doesn't really tell me what it would sound like if I went and bought one
You won’t find many of them stock anymore lol. Its like a 50 year old amp bro

Anyone know where or how to repair a circuit board from one of these ??

Maybe I should've bought this amp off ebay , spend all my money on a Gibson Les Paul Classic expensive !

Mike, if you haven't gotten a footswitch for it, you're still missing out.
+vr6pilot yeah, I need one..
