- Workday Wednesday: Bucket Mouse Trap
Shawn puts together a giant mouse trap using a 5 gal bucket, a metal rod, a torch to heat metal rod, PVC cut to size, two wooden slats, two screws and peanut butter (water optional).
As of editing this video we already caught one mouse!

Worked for me, thanks! I used weed trimmer string and 1/2" PVC. Made 3 traps, first night caught 2 in the shed, 1 in the greenhouse and 1 in the garage. Don't use much peanut butter or else they fill up and get away. The harder they work for it, the more chance they have of falling in.
I caught many mice with the method shown, but only one rat, so I am going to try your weed trimmer string method, thanks
I built one like that over 30 years ago. Instead of a piece of PVC pipe, I used a plastic hair spray bottle. It keeps my garage clear of mice. They can do some serious damage to a car in a very short period of time.
Just a tip if the “liquid mouse killer” is to be left for any length of time, use left over vegetable oil so the bodies do not decompose and smell.
That's actually what I'm going to use as lubrication for the wooden dowel I made with a piece of pvc that's a hair larger. Chipmonks keep digging damn holes near the foundation
🔵 Actually mineral-oil would probably be best if it's going to be left unattended for a while, as vegetable-oil WILL turn rancid and stink all by itself.
If you put some dish soap on the water the fleas that are on the mice will not be able to get out
"Theres about 2 gallons a water"
*puts 3 gallons in*
If you notice the gallon jugs are not full that he's pouring in there they're only about half
Pretty cool but if you live by a field and invest in a barn owl nest box or build your own, the breeding pair will consume at least 2000 mice in one chick rearing season. Talk about eliminating Lyme disease vectors.
That sounds awesome! Will need to look into this
what about the forest i hear owls and this sounds like a good idea i have a little field in my backyard but lots of trees too
Ticks are the Vectors of the disease not the animals themselves. If you want rid of Lyme disease vectors buy animals that eat ticks like ground foraging birds.
Very valid point! Owls are voracious eaters. A baby owl can wolf down a whole mouse. It’s unbelievable how they eat.
Remember this though: Owls like to nest in tall trees, many times in tall, dead trees. So if you’re cutting down a tree in your yard that meets that definition, wait until wintertime, or observe the tree for a few weeks and make sure no owls or hawks are nesting in the tree.
Owl boxes are, of course, a good alternative, especially if you don’t have tall trees in the area.
Don't help when you live in a tent on the edge of a corn field.
Built one of these in my garage when I was 17, had my girlfriend over one weekend and we decided to hide in the garage and fool around. She tripped over the bucket with 7 dead mice. Yeah, I didn’t get laid that day.
But there were 7 dead mice
It's a pretty efficient mouse trap design. I'm subscribed to a channel where the guy shows a different mouse trap or two every week and this method certainly rates highly in his recommendations. I hope you caught lots of mice!
Yes, we caught lots of mice
@@NaturalLivingHomestead will it work for rats
Natural Living Homestead where did you got the rolling ? Can you tell me the measurements please of the materials, where you bought it?
We have done that before. Most recently we had chicken feed in a bucket fermenting in the garage. Several times we came in and found a dead mouse in the bucket. We are not sure how they got in because there was no way up except flying or climbing up the bucket. But we found several mice several different days.
2 foot long electric saw to cut that wire? in australia we use plier wire cutters
in queensland we just use our teeth
@@ANGUS31573 nup, clothes, height, surfboard length are in feet and inches, we use both
SNAP
I’m Italian. I use a cutting torch.
I'm a NSWelshman, we use our buttocks
"liquid mouse killer" lmao
+cain tuphast lol right!
I made this mice trap today.
I hope it works.
2 days ago i made a trap for rats.
Like youtube for this video s.
Thanks and greeting from the other site of the world a little country called: the Netherlands 😀
Mate,What a classic little gadget Shawn...I was laughing my arse off when you said.."Add the liquid mouse killer"..Water!!..." they can't swim,at least not very long"..Gold!!..Thanks for Trap and the Laughs..Have a good one.
I made one yesterday with a coffee can and today I has 3 dead mice.
Have used this in garage in winter just put antifreeze in the bucket.
You see, you and I are alike in that I prefer mice swimming. I'll be making these for our barn as well. With no children around I don't have to set a good example.
I would like to have seen the results of the mouse trap the next day.
me too... I don't understand why people will go to great length to show the world how great they are with their brain but fails to show the result of their geniuses. lol...
@Colson Lucas In their original format or high definition? :)
@Bradley Dorian Do you guys like watching live television? Well, you can do the same now but for FREE. Just get on Google and search for FREE STREAMING or just go to PLUTOTV website... Apparently, there are tons of website providing LIVE television STREAMING for FREE. We cut our cable service like 5 years ago because of this and never looked back... Enjoy!!!
They work pretty good
Expecting a call?
Remember when those things were cool? Me either.
You have to put water in, they can jump high and get out.
2drunksracing; You are right! I caught a mouse, put it in a painter's 5 gallon bucket with a Top on it ... the only way it could get out was through the small plastic snap on pouring cap....AND it got up the bucket and through that hole!!!! I believe if I sprayed the inside sides of the bucket w/WD-40, or used petroleum jelly it couldn't make it up to that hole. ....POW!
You dont actually need water in it. That's just cruel to drown an animal.
If your bucket is empty and such then there is a way it wont get out.
@@mozariahrain8363 They don't drown, they can swim. They just can't jump out of it.
@@mark1952able prolly wouldnt go near bucket if wd40 was in there.
Built one put peanut butter on it and now the ants have taken over
Mice can jump.3 feet vertically. Add soap to the water to prevent the ability to get a grip to launch back out.
Can't jump from water unless it's Jesus Mouse.
They will run horizontally along wire cables or ropes and can jump up 13 inches from the floor onto a flat surface.
Drill some tiny holes in the CPVC to help hold that pnut butter ,Kinda how you help BONDO stick to a car Panel.
That's a terrible idea, Bondo will stick just fine to bare metal. Drilling holes will expose the Bondo to moisture, cause it to swell, and rot out the panel.
@@Soupy_loopy Oh lord
Will you let us know how it works in the barn?
You should really just use a drill to make the holes in the bucket for the rod. Burning holes through the plastic puts off vapor you really don't want to breathe...
Snips / wire cutters would work on trimming the rod too.
New subscriber here thanks for the trap design! God bless!
Tony n Lee Ann
He's wrong about using it without water. Mice can easily jump right out.
Not a 5 gallon bucket except maybe a kangaroo mouse.lol
I would poop in the bucket so the little busters fall in poop water
I trust this man, he still used a Bluetooth in 2017
Just did something similar because of ur video. Hoping it works as i dont see any updates lol
That "heh" was identical to the "heh" I wouldve made doing the same exact thing xD us men are all alike we all make the same noises too xD
I love you man i got rid of over 20 rats lil
If you filled the bucked 3 quarters fill then would this idea work for rats?
Was it successful? I will try that in my barn. Thanks for sharing guys. Carl and Dawn
Yes, it was/is successful, we check it and "empty" it each day.
They can easily jump out without water. Needs at least 3-4'' of water in the bottom
I did that w/o water but my bait was untouched... I used sunflower seeds and peanut bitter
Maybe you should try peanut butter instead of peanut bitter.
@@waynesmith9765 Oh snap, wayne!!!
I was thinking of super gluing tacks all along the bottom of the bucket. ;) Ahahaha Ahahaha Ahahaha lol. Just kidding that's just cruel. Water works.
Just must dislike mice as much as I do lol!
I made one with a Coke can but no results but will try your method. Thanks!
Frugal Farmer Channel , Try using a 2 qt fruit juice/tomato juice can on a coathanger axel wire set BELOW top of bkt. Set ramp at R angle to can. They HAVE to jump to reach peanut butter smeared can. Mice/rats are screwed once they jump & they ALWAYS jump. smearing a thin bit of Peanut butter up the ramp adds a scent trail & attracts more. Simple, cheap & works better than ALL these complicated crappers.
Same, I have used water bottle or soda can..didn't seem to get the mouse. But I can't remember if I put water or not at the bottom. It's possible the mouse jumped out.
Every mouse trap works when you don't show the results.
Sooo..did you catch any mice? It would have helped to see the end results.
Thanks so much for the video been having rodent problems down here in the caribean for a while.
Damn, how did peat end up in the islands?
Results?
PVC Pipe is a very Good Idea,
The gag on her is hilarious
It doesn’t matter whether we’re talking about a person or an animal. Swimming until they drown is unnecessarily cruel. Please don’t.
Billy, nobody asked for your opinion. Go hug a grizzly bear.
Hahaha! Good one.
I was looking at other videos on this more than one person said make it with gloves as older more experienced mice will smell human off it and stay away, I was wondering why I was only getting babies on bucket 2.0 I did it with gloves and started to catch the parents finally cos there who I need out of my bird room..the ones having babies every ten minutes
“you can but you do not have to kill these living beings brutally and make them suffer” ok thanks
Hi from a farm in Scotland - well next to one - so I seen your video a month or so ago and built one.. first night.. 4 mice, since then nothing I think the tube is too short as they can probably use the road to balance, but I made it longer tonight, however its not completely straight straight cause I bought it at Homebase as a piece of long plastic pipe but it still turns doesnt it have to be super straight if so what tube did you use lol thankssss - hi from da UK :)
What if it's a rat and its so big that they ARE able to jump out even with the water
I fill my bucket up waist high, well at least past the ears
Follow up?? Catch any?
We've tried the same design however not working pretty well, since the mouse is too big. They can literally eat the peaut butter without climbing up the pipe. I need a bigger container.
Go to walmart and buy a 54qt clear container
Problem solved
The mice are so big that they stand on the edge of the bucket and reach the rod in the center of the bucket???
@@ronaldwilkins6056 right them might be some big ass Rats
@@ronaldwilkins6056called rats I think....
Love you man.i hope it's gonna to work for me.cheers
So, what were the results? 🤷♂️
Which water to use? drinking water? Or distilled water?
Bottled spring water works best.
Toilet water.
Sewage water
Perrier Water, the most expensive you can find.
Diesel
Tomorrow never came, didn’t show what happened
Your wife trying to tell you how to kill something.
Cool GSI Shirt…. Where did you get it?
Want to try - the water tho seems kinda cruel to know I'm drowning something alive...... slowly 😵
Drop a toaster in there.
Was That Rain Water ? It Looked Dirty ? I Just Made A Rat Bucket Trap Today I Put Up A Video Also
Probably just unfiltered well water.
Liquid mouse killer
You need water so they don't jump out. If you want to be humane Add some type of foam floater so the mice or rats can hang on. Then once they are gathered and you "relocate" them pick ur method while the wife isnt there lmao.
Serious? You don't show any mice getting caught? El cheapo!
can i use small bucket?
Just use a plastic shot cup from your local bar.
not another who shows how to do trap, then doesnt show results, pretty sad
1:49 nice shot of your beer gut, bro
Don’t be a douche bag, a- hole. It’s a mouse trap video, who the fuck cares if he has a gut.
Will this work for rats
Don’t you need to put down poison as otherwise they won’t take it back to the nest and just keep coming??
He didnt want to put poison and let the mice get away because if one of his cats or dogs catches and eats the poisoned mouse they will also get poisoned. People who make traps like this care about the environment, and so they do not use poison.
Secondary poisoning is a real thing... yeah its kills them. . But the dying & the dead ones will then kill anything thats eats them- fox, owls ,hawks others birds cats dogs and so on.
Another vid suggests antifreeze instead of water; believe me though they can jump.
Well that sucks. I wanted to see a humane way to trap the mice.
Can’t just catch and release in the wood or something?
Why not just get some cats to live in the barn?
Hi👍👍👍👍👍👍⚘⚘⚘🙉⚘🙉
That thing is a joke. I made one. The mouse eats the peanut butter on the ramp and will not fall in.
Damn I think you got ferrets not mice. It’s like 6 inches to the middle?
Well don't put the peanut butter on the ramp then.
WOuld have been nice to see some results of this. Why go through the trouble to do all this and not show results. THis sounds like clickbait to me, wish I could give more than one thumbs down.
lame, use a drill next time...
