    Yanis Varoufakis: The Global Minotaur: America, Europe and the Future of the Global Economy (book promotion)
    Q&A: Marko Kostanić
    Yanis Varoufakis: "The Global Minotaur: America, Europe and the Future of the Global Economy" (Zed Books, London, 2013)
    In this remarkable and provocative book, Yanis Varoufakis explodes the myth that financialisation, ineffectual regulation of banks, greed and globalisation were the root causes of the global economic crisis. Rather, they are symptoms of a much deeper malaise which can be traced all the way back to the Great Crash of 1929, then on through the 1970s: the time when a 'Global Minotaur' was born. Just as the Athenians maintained a steady flow of tributes to the Cretan beast, so the 'rest of the world' began sending incredible amounts of capital to America and Wall Street. Thus, the Global Minotaur became the 'engine' that pulled the world economy from the early 1980s to 2008.
    Yanis Varoufakis
    Political economist and a professor at the University of Texas, Austin. After training in mathematics and statistics, Varoufakis received his economics doctorate in 1987 at the University of Essex. Before that he has allready began teaching economics and econometrics at the University of Essex and the University of East Anglia. From 1989 until 2000 he taught as Senior Lecturer in Economics at the Department of Economics of the University of Sydney. In 2000 he moved to his native Greece where he was Professor of Economic Theory at the University of Athens. He is an active participant in the current debates on the global and European crisis and the author of The Global Minotaur: America, the True Origins of the Financial Crisis and the Future of the World Economy (2011).

    Remarkable insight into the intentional design and obstacles faced in the evolution of the international political economy since WWII. Yanis Varoufakis is not just an outstanding academic but one who has worked inside the highest levels of national and global finance, reporting what is rarely disclosed by those who subscribe to the silence code. A highly credible resource for those interested in actual learning about the world or context in which we all live everyday...

    Dear audience,
    We will try to respond to the most frequent speculations regarding the authenticity of this video in order to give you and us some peace from conspiracy theories. Apologies for the lack of response so far - it's been a hectic few media days.
    1) This is the original, undoctored, unmanipulated recording of Yanis Varoufakis's book presentation from May 15th 2013 in Zagreb, Croatia, that took place during the Subversive festival.
    2) Neither Jan Böhmermann nor anyone from Neo Magazin Royale participated in the recording, editing or uploading of this video to this channel, and we never collaborated on a common project.
    3) This video was uploaded in 2015 because we didn't have funds/time to do it in 2013. We filmed all of Varoufakis's appearances at the festival but had to choose which to edit and publish. We edited his "Confessions of an Erratic Marxist" keynote lecture and his round-table with Susan George and Franco Berardi Bifo. Syriza's election victory prompted interest for the rest of the recordings, so we put some time into editing the book presentation and interview also. We are a small, almost skeleton crew of non-funded/under-funded volunteers. Please send money.
    4) The red flashes in the video are due to the poor state of our recording equipment. They can be found in other recordings on our channel, such as this lecture by David Morley from Subversive 2014, which was uploaded on 14th July 2014: th-cam.com/video/8GFpYrZBwDI/w-d-xo.html e.g. at timeframe 00:08:00-00:08:10
    5) We publish recordings from different events and manifestations, not just Subversive festival, and there are other unpublished recordings in our archive dating back to 2009 - some will be published. We are not the official youtube channel of the Subversive festival, we are their media partner. The official Subversive festival channel is here: th-cam.com/channels/BKNt7cUsrLAZCC_QJ0TIAQ.html
    So now that we've covered these really important issues, maybe we can focus some attention to what the lecture is actually about, and try to grapple with the implications of that.
    Best,
    Editorial board @ Slobodni Filozofski / SkriptaTV

      Ok now only one more question:
      "The Guardian" interviewed Martin Beros a few days ago, who is supposedly the camera man for Skripta TV (Link: www.theguardian.com/world/video/2015/mar/17/yanis-varoufakis-middle-finger-video-greece). Is this correct? Is he the one who filmed this video for you? And if yes, why is he mentioning Jan Böhmermann at the end (in a somewhat strange way)? Is it because of the "V for Varoufakis" music video? If so, how did you find out about that if you have never had contact with NEO Magazin Royale?
      Thanks for bringing a little light in this "mess".....Germany was going nuts the last 24 hours ^^

      I guess this is already answered by the timeline - the source video from SkriptaTV was published on February 12, and the "V for Varoufakis" music video from NEO MAGAZIN ROYALE followed on February, 25, wherein some thin pale kid purposely took that gesture out of context. The Guardian Interview dates March, 17, two days after the infamous Jauch-Show aired. One day later, the hashtag #varoufake was created, when Böhmermann claimed for the first time that he doctored the finger into video. So while Jauch and his Team actually might have picked up on that gesture through "V for Varoufakis", they decided to take it out of context as well, concentrated on that gesture, blew it up in size and scandalize it a bit by creating a huge national offense. You could say they threw the public a bone, which the usual junk yard dogs from the german right-winger BILD-Newspaper gleefully gnawed on, and Marin Breos from SkriptaTV calls them out for this in his Guradian interview, essentially saying "there's a huge difference, if a funny music video by a cheap satirist like Jan B. (who can't even drive a longboard!) takes something out of context, of if it's some supposedly political major prime time celebrity talk show host like Jauch, who makes it look like complex political themes could be reduced to sensationalism, gestures and posturing"... and well, I think he has made a good point there. Also, the "strange way" in which Breos mentions Böhmermann is probably only due to spelling difficulties, i.e. the pronounciation of a german name with an "Umlaut" in it. Not easy for a foreigner, y'know? :P
      PS: ... und außerdem, ich traue meinem Böhmi ja einiges zu, aber dass er nicht nur die ganze Skandalisierung durch Jauch geplant, sondern sie auch von langer Hand vorbereitet haben soll, indem er dafür sogar dieses Video hier in Zusammenarbeit mit SkriptaTV gefälscht hat, nur um nach seinem Fake-Fake hinterher noch einen Fake-Fake-Fake abzufeuern... nee, ich rufe Bullenscheiße. ^^

    A great explanation of the post-1945 global capitalism and the causes of the 2008 crisis. Really eye-opening. In light of this explanation, it is understandable why Varoufakis is so critical of the inept measures taken by the EU in response to the crisis.

      Wow, he says Germany more likely to drop euro currency than Greece. Is that true?

    • @BerndPaysan
      @BerndPaysan 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Michael Tufekci Yes. We have that AfD party, which seriously wants to get out of the Euro. They are at about 6%. That is the support in Germany to get out of the Euro. The support in Greece to get out of the Euro is 0%.

    • @MikeWeaverUpdates
      @MikeWeaverUpdates 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Would inflation be helpful for Greece?

    • @BerndPaysan
      @BerndPaysan 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Michael Tufekci No. Debtees will adjust the interest rates so that they get more money back even including inflation. And they will start to insist in stable money for the debts, like dollars or whatsoever. E.g. in 1923, when Germany hat its hyperinflation, the war debt wasn't inflated away, because it was in gold, not in Reichsmark. One big part of the reason, why Greek has such a high debt is accumulated δραχμή debt before the Euro; the drachme had its inflation times.
      I think one fundamental economic principle has to be understood by every debtee: To get your money back, your debtor needs economic power. In Germany, we say "seize the pocket of a naked man": it's obvious that you can't do it.
      Varoufakis is someone with greater skills in economy than I have, and his plan makes sense: The first you do is to freeze all the debt. It is not served, it is not payed back now, no new obligations, no interest rates. That's the first step, with the negative interest rates of the ECB now, zero is already a good interest rate ;-).
      The next step is a plan how to get the economy in Greek up again. If that works, you can start making a plan for how to pay back that money. I.e. you set a threshold of Greeks economic power, and when Greek surpasses that, it can start paying back. The payback has to be limited relative to the BIP, you can't ask too much.
      And realistically, most of the Greek debt is just gone, it has to be written off. In 1953, West Germany negotiated a good deal about its war debts. That was a deal like that. And when we finally got a peace treaty in 1990, the 2+4 treaty, it wasn't called "peace treaty" to slip it through, because it contained that no reparation will be paid, either.
      We are the biggest debtee and the biggest deptor in Europe. But we managed to get rid of the biggest part of our debt, by showing others the finger.

    Check at 40:13. What is Varoufakis even yelling at?? Saying the video was 'doctored'... there was nothing doctored at all and even if taken a little bit out of context, this doesn't change anything about the fakt he and his little middlefingery friend had their appearance just right there.

      backyard affair Ok, before you all post what's correct and I totally agree with everything you say, check the way Greece entered the eurozone... The fake documents, etc. It's all about corrupted politicians. Greece didn't enter eurozone with proper "papers". I mean, they said we had the "power" to enter the eurozone. But it's all fake. The only mistake we did, is that we trusted these politicians. And the way the society engulfed the same bad behaviour. By that, I mean, voting a party, only to get a job in the services of general interest.

    • @backyardaffair
      @backyardaffair 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Diddly Do I totally agree. It was the fault of the politicians. The sad thing is that the greek people have to take the consequences.

    After listening to the complete speech of Varoufakis I find it kind of funny and, yes, dishonest, that he never touches on the real root cause of the Greek problem and the coming financial disaster that the whole world will face soon. Yes, one guy in the audience was touching on the Austrian economic point of view which provides a good explanation gor the ongoing financial mess, maybe Varoufakis doesn't know the "Austrian" economics, but he could also have listened to Voltaire, who said long time ago: “Paper money eventually returns to its intrinsic value - zero.” (Voltaire, 1694-1778) Often Rather Quickly./Unbacked FIAT paper money is the problem, Mr. Varoufakis. And this nowadays is created by a private institution called FED that spreads it's worthless sheets of paper around the world collecting interest for it. Is that a fair model of creating our, i.e. the people's money?

  • @kaffeelisa

    sunday he gave an interview in a german tv show and they showed the clip (around min 40) where he showed his middle finger to germany. i really don`t have a problem with people having different opinions. and by the way, i also don`t think that all german or all greek have the same opinion - at least, as a german, i can say: we don`t. if we want to live in europe in peace we need to learn to accept different opinions and to tolerate it.
    what i really have a problem with, is, that Mr. Varoufakis immediatley said that this clip was made up. after watching this video, i don`t believe him. poor move, i think. instead he just should have explained, why he acted this way. we are all human and sometimes we do things we later regret (or not).
