  • Love's Labour's Lost is one of Shakespeare's funniest and most popular comedies, full of witty wordplay, physical comedy, and romance, and featuring a plotline based on a classic battle of the sexes. Bard in the Barracks' production is set in the early 1960s, putting a Mad Men-style spin on the show.

I don't know where in hell this play got the reputation of being one of Shakespeare's throwaway works. (The received wisdom for generations was that it had too much incomprehensible Elizabethan slang to be actable). I've seen it in professional production twice -- once at the Washington Shakespeare Theater, and once at the Stratford, Ontario Shakespeare Festival. It knocked the audience out of their seats both times -- and these were legitimate, straight productions, that respected both the integrity of the text and the tone of the play. At the Washington production, when the cast danced at the conclusion to those two GORGEOUS songs in honor of winter and spring (one of the most sheerly lovely passages in all of Shakespeare), it was all the delighted audience could do to keep itself from dancing in the aisles along with them. I left the theater thanking God for Shakespeare's existence.

Absolutely wonderful performance! Great cast and the wonderful setting of Odell Park, please keep them coming as they are keeping me sane in these, uncertain times, bravo!

Such a great job! I was watching this parallel to my reading of the text, and the experience was so refreshing. Thank you.

If you want to see a performance where they know the proper pacing and pronounciation of the words, watch the 1975 Play of the Month with a young Robert Shaw as Ferdinand and Jeremy Brett as tge witty wordsmith Berowne.

These people don't know how to make Shakespeare compelling. You have to know what the words mean, how and when to say them + also "Act".

Agree wholeheartedly. So many bad productions out there. This is one.

I think they're actually trying, but they're just not experienced enough. I was especially disappointed in Berowne, although he did get better toward the end. Also I found the stuff going on in the background very distracting. I did like that they used young actors, because to my mind these characters have to be young. The Hercules Worthy was the best part.
