    I play a double lip on clarinet, also play oboe too. I use this little white plastic mold I got off Amazon for like 10-12 bucks. It works wonders for me! I got for long playing sessions because of it! 🥰 love your playing Doreen!

    Cigarette paper works well, but I have always used parafilm instead because it's thicker. Then again, I suppose it's a matter of personal preference.

    Can you talk about why you choose not to do world tours? Aside from the travel restrictions now. What are your reasons?

    Because cigarette paper is kinda pricey, I use parchment paper (piece of baking sheet). 😆
    And I put it over my top teeth since I play double lip.

      I play double lip too. When I try to put my top teeth on my armature gets too loose 💦 everywhere. I bite my bottom lip too. Great advice Ms. Doreen. Because of this I usually take a couple days break in between me playing.

    Hi Doreen! I play clarinet in my High School band and I've noticed that when playing for a long time, the knuckle that connects to the thumb on my right hand starts to feel some pain. Is there any way I can combat this? Thanks

      @irqx8356 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Hey, Anderson, I know I’m not Doreen but I’m also a fellow clarinet player and I’m in a few ensembles and symphonies. I would suggest two things: The first, try using a neck strap to take some of the pressure off of the thumb. The second: use a thumb grip which is a nice, squishy object you can put on the clarinet to reduce the “stabbing” or “pushing” feeling on the knuckle. I hope I’m of some help!

      Hi Anderson, both iRqx and jonny boy are correct. You can also try adjusting (if you can), the thumb rest. Sometimes, switching positions relives the tension on the joints. An ice pack will also help. There are some made for the thumb and fingers. If it starts to hurt while your playing, just temporarily, rest the bell on your knees to get through the session. Hope this helps too.

      I learned from Paradise Winds Dr Stefanie Gardner that when you pull your right hand away from your clarinet, the tips of your index finger and thumb should touch for correct hand position. If they don’t, adjust your thumb rest so they do. My hand feels so much better now. Now I can’t believe I managed to play all those years with my wrist cocked.😊

      I noticed that lifting the clarinet higher also helps. It's not common classical practice and may impact your playing if you're not use to it. I found it helps a lot.

      When I was younger nothing hurt. Now my wrists and thumb hurt when I play for more than an hour.

    I use white floral tape when playing tenor sax. It’s lightly waxed so it doesn’t break down.
