In this weeks video I have compiled a variety of authentic 1940's exercises used for warming up for gymnastics, trimming down that extra weight and toning the bust! I had heaps of fun making this video so I hope you join along with me and enjoy it also!
Thank you so much for watching and I'll see you next Sunday!
Lots of love,

*Me, watching this while drinking hot cocoa* : Yes, I can definitely feel the burn
Lmfao :D
Sage, I was born during the 1940's and I can do all these exercises and be so happy because of the music and nostalgia. Because of you and these exercises you will help me live to 100! Hugs from Southern California!!
Get it, girl!
That's amazing Linda!!!
That's great Linda, wishing you the best ❤️
PERIOD LINDA!
You can do it linda
I so glad I am not the only person who loves learning about what everyone's daily activies were from the past. I love it. I am going to do these activities too!
Brings back memories from the early 50’s when my Mother would do these exercises. But she didn’t use a chair to hold her feet because my little sister & I would sit on her ankles!! Lovely memories!
This is so nostalgic. My grandmother used to do these exact excercises with us. She would tell us about them and her past and how it was during this same era in Mexico. It's cool to see how things can overlap thru countries and cultures in different times.
I was looking for a good workout routine and the fact that it’s vintage makes it even better!
Btw I love your outfit!
Same here! Everything else is so boring. Between this and my vintage bicycle, I think I might just have prolonged interest! 😁👍
I feel exactly the same because I am vintage!
This was so fun! I feel like I rarely exercise because today's workouts are so intense and long, they sometimes get boring. These exercises were my favourite ones from you so far. Thanks, Sage! ❤️
I'm glad to hear you enjoyed these vintage exercises! Thanks so much for watching! xx
My mother told me "the best exercise is the one you will do." I took her advice and do things I enjoy. It changes from time to time, but right now it's power yoga and biking. Also, new research says just 15 minutes a day increases your life span by 3 years. 🙂 I committed to 30 days of power yoga recently and I can now do 40 pushups. It doesn't have to be torturous and intense to see results. I hope this is encouraging to you. 🙂 I definitely feel so much better after deciding that I don't need long, intense workouts.
@@silencedogood9747 Your mother must be a smart woman. And thank you, this might inspire me to keep up a daily exercise routine :)
Same here, I find today's workouts soooo long and intense. I rather do 15 mins every day than 1,5 hours three times a week.
@@sarahaljabban8305 thank you, I hope you find something you love to do daily. By the way, there have been a lot of days where I just did a 10 or 15 minute yoga workout and it's been enough to help me build muscle. So even if you don't have a big chunk of time, it's still worthwhile to do a workout. 🙂
I would love to learn what ladies of the 50s did for fun? Bridge club? Tea with the ladies? I would love you to do a video of that side of the 1950s life of a housewife
A lot of these my chiropractor has told me to do for my back, especially after working on the computer. I tend to slouch when I'm editing videos. Definitely saving this for later!
Just don't do bycycles or any leg swings in the air, upright, lying down or in shoulder stand. Those are not great for the back. But those can all be modified to be safe. We could all use those upper body exercises, every day.
I love how these exercises can be done anywhere and without modern athletic clothes & shoes. It looks so graceful.
Love this, it's like seeing a combination of Pilates, warm up exercises, gymnastics, even some of the things I do at boxing! Body weight exercise isn't too be sneezed at, do enough and you'll definitely get 💪
Think I need to do some of these in my work breaks, I've been so lazy during this long lockdown. Time to get my old timey glam moves on with Sage!
It's 7am and I just finished doing this workout with you Sage, it was fun and I'm definitely warmer than I was before! I consider myself to have very strong arms and those arm exercises are still pretty killer lol.
😃 Reminds me of the calisthenics we used to do in gym class and summer camp in the 1970s (does anyone else remember those ugly uniforms?).
I should be able to do at least some of these. I am disabled so I'm not sure about the ones where you sit or lay down on the floor.
Thanks for all you do and the trips down memory lane! 😃
it's so interesting to see how much even the littlest aspect of our life changes through decades. all off these exercise movements still exist (and even the past versions work like crazy), but seeing the small varieties/changes feels like a fun "spot the object" game to me lol
I am so happy that I found you. All my depression and anxiety fade away and life feels so charming and enchanting when I watch you. 🥰🌸❤️
Wow! I was trying to keep up, but I'm 60 and shewwwwweeeeeeeee what a workout. I had to do the floor ones a bit differently. I am going to do these every day for the next week. I should have a bit more flexibility by then.
Have a great weekend,
xoxo's Sandie
I'm so glad you enjoyed it!! Have a great weekend also! xx
I love these! I can vary days and flip between the decades. Also, these speak to my feminine side, very graceful and all about tone and range of motion. Thank you again for a lovely video 😊🥰
Please make more exercise videos... So cool these vintage exercises and also difficult! ❤️❤️💋💋 I love your channel
It's crazy to see how much exercise has changed over the decades. These are the sort of exercises I'd do to warm up 😅 definitely gonna give this routine a try as just an easy home work out on days I can't get to the gym
Yeah exactly what I was thinking, solid warm up moves! Love how fitness changes throughout the years!
As a working student I appreciate this workout, I very much enjoy this workout 😊.I also shown this to my grandma and she thought you’re from her era and I said no gramma this video is this year, and my great grandma was shock but she remembered all the workouts you did, and she enjoy your video!😊💖
Awww she sounds so sweet your grandma!! Xx
Thank you so much for this. I followed along for about 3/4 of the video when I ran out of steam. I'm going to be doing this workout in the coming days! It's so fun and so retro that it keeps my interest... everything else bores me! 🤣
Sage ,my mom used to lie on the floor and do the bottom up leg lifts, and side to sides, almost every day,,and I remember as a little girl lying beside her and trying to do them with her. And my mom did this with stockings on ,funnily enough,as she wore them every day.My mom was a tiny thing,so I guess the excercises worked .One thing I remember her saying about stockings,is they made the legs look pretty. All ladies wore them back in the day . That was alot of fun. I hope the chickens are doing well. Thank you so much for the video sweetie 💞❤💞
Thank you so much Candice! And the chickens are doing great! 🐓💕😊
@@SageLilleyman you're very welcome. I'm so glad ❤🐓🐓💞

Love when she fell over! The little squeal was so cute and funny!!! Love this channel, so glad your video was recommended to me.!
I missed it
I’ll happily do this everyday over modern routines
Always a smile when she uploads ♥️
Sage, I've watched several of your videos, and, of course subscribed several weeks ago, and I have to tell you that whenever I watch your vidoes I always leave with a "real good - feel good" attitude. You are such a lovely TH-camr and no matter what you are talking about or teaching us, one cannot help but feel great about themselves and life in general after watching you. You are such a doll with a great outlook on life and you are a joy to subscribe to and watch.
I don't know anyone like you, and I certainly am glad I came across your videos. God bless you always and keep making videos. We need a lovely lady to teach us about recipes, exercises, how to do our hair, etc. You spread joy and kindness every time. Thank you so much for coming into our lives.
Wishing you all the best, your new friend Kathy.
You are cutest young person on TH-cam. Keep up the good work young lady, from Irma, your fan in Texas. 👩🏻🦳
Hair and makeup done for exercising. I am impressed!
That's how it was back then lol.
Hehe this was so fun to watch! I love exercises from these eras, they're all so much more fun than modern exercises I think.
Thanks Kristina! 💞 Yes I agree, they are much more fun!
I just love your channel. I wish you guys would do more of the “ living in different time periods.
My routine is now all three of your vintage workout routines back to back and by this one, I definitely feel a burn.
I LOVE your other vintage exercise videos and the 40's have always been my favorite so I am so excited!! 🙌 Thank you!!
(By the way, have you ever heard of the book "Beauty, Glamour and Personality" by the brothers Bud and Ern Westmore? They and their father did the make-up for many, many of the movie stars back in the "Golden Era" of Hollywood and their book is just full of fun, interesting, helpful tips that I think you would very much enjoy. 😀
Ive just looked this book up after your suggestion and it seems pretty hard to get hold of 😭
I remember my mom doing a lot of these! Brought back some good memories!
You could use these exercise routines for a rehabilitation nursing assignment. You are a really good teacher as well!!
I love your exercise videos! Thanks, Sage!
Thank you so much! 💞☺️
Watching this is bringing back memories! My Mom had a little handbook filled with diagrams of these exact exersizes.
I’m going to try some of these… some of them honestly look tough!! Great video! 👏💪🏻😊
My abs, shoulders and pectoral muscles were sore (in a good way!) the day after, so it really was a great workout! :)
I did a few and holy hell some of them hurt lol...a sure sign I need to exercise more!!!
I will definitely have to give this a try! What a sweet video. Another really good one❤️
Love this! Thank you for another lovely video! 💕
Thanks so much for watching! xx
I’m early and I love your videos. They are incredible and I love the theme of the 1940’s and 50’s
You are so darling! You make me think of what it was like for my Grandmas and then I get lovely memories. Thank you 💚
Sage loved these exercises, I am definitely going to do these I can’t do exercises when you need to use weights these are just what I have been looking for. Thank you 🙏 sweet Sage💐🌹💕
Absolutely loved this! Thank you for being such a kind and lovely person!! ♥️♥️
It was so fun to learn new exercises that I’ve never heard of before.
Same :D
Is it possible if you could do the 20’s and 30’s exercise please
I am so excited to start doing these!! Thank you 🩷
I’ve tried all of your exercise videos and I love them all but I think this is probably my favorite. I love that it’s short enough to fit into my busy day (stay at home mom of a preschooler here) but still feels like I actually worked my body.
Also, you look so much like a young Marilyn Monroe here! (When her hair was shoulder length and still transitioning to blonde and so was a light auburn like yours.) There are pictures of her doing exercises at that time and when you were laying down with your legs up I had to do a double take because the resemblance was just striking.
Also, I LOVE your hair here! Can we get a tutorial for this look? I think it’s just big pin curls in your fringe with the back down and curly but would love a more in depth look at it.
Thank you for all your lovely content!
I have mobility issues / knee issues; wanting to participate even though getting up and down from the floor is a 'challenge,' I modify and stand for the exercises! (Yes, you can only do 1 leg at a time and it changes the movements some, but hey, if you want to participate but have issues, carefully modifying is a way to enjoy movement safely and in a way that 'builds up' to more difficult things.) Just some words of encouragement from a layperson😇🥰
I love your videos Sage i enjoy your vintage exercise videos a lot because a lot of the exercises seem to be just upper body and for someone like me who has a disability and uses a wheelchair finding exercises i can do is hard so this must mean i should have been looking at vintage exercises the whole time
Aw I’m so glad you found these helpful! Xx ❤️
I just started exercising again and this was the perfect video for me! I’m going to do this every day. Thank you!😊😊
I was looking for a good short workout video and I just so happen to be a history buff. I'm so glad I found this!!!
These workouts are great. I really felt the muscles in my arms! I love how simple and fun they are and how we are doing something different every 2 minutes. And I love how it uses every aspect of our body. It feels good.
Thanks for this! You are an awesome fitness instructor!
That’s quite a workout! I wasn’t working out with you, but I was analyzing what I thought I could do and what I couldn’t do. 😛
Love your videos Sage!
Aw, thanks so much for watching! :)
I definitely couldn't do the floor stuff because I have bad knees and also a belly in the way for the knee curls :/ but hopefully with weight loss I'll be able to do them.
I absolutely love your style and great demonstration of these exercises. My Mom used to workout with Jack Lalanne and also do the Go you Chicken Fat go workout - Thanks for reminding me that these "old" exercises are still excellent. Love your hair too!
These are perfect for me! :) So much better than exercise routines today. And you are so sweet to watch and listen to!
I love these! Thank you for sharing, all your vintage workouts are so fun, but this one is my favourite!
I love this!! My dad taught me many of these when I was young and they are still very beneficial
Im watching these exercises and im thinking... "I can do this one, this looks fun! I suffer with AS and I'm already doing yoga stretches so some of these look like they will help me out too! I just love the 1940s life.
Thank you Sage. Hope your little chickens are doing well too ❤️
I'm young enough with little to no workout experience, stuck in the house for awhile and switching to a healthier diet so this is certainly going to help
Unable to do these Sage, but I so enjoyed watching you demonstrate these real vintage exercises!🥰
I'm defiantly going to try these exercises, Thanks for posting this video!
You're welcome, I hope you enjoy them! xx
please make more exercise videos 🙏🏻
You are wonderful💕💕
Thanks for putting this great little exercise routine together. It's a great way to start or end the day.
These exercises gave me a little more burn than your other ones, but they were still super fun!! I can’t wait to add this to my morning routine! Thanks for the awesome vintage workout Sage!
Yay I’m so glad you enjoyed it! Xx 💕
im an old soul im always trying to live the old times and finding this work out i will enoy thank you
Thanks Sage for this fun little video. I did the exercises with you today. Felt like my body worked. This will be my new exercise routine for the new year.
I love the technicolor you did on this video. It looks very authentic.
Your videos make my day better ♥️♥️ you’re so inspiring! thank you, Sage Xoxo
Aw thank you so much for watching! 💞
As a 2000’s babies I wish exercises were taught to me like this. This is simple, fun, to the point while hitting target points of muscles. It’s fun breaking sweat to this but today’s fitness age can be so masochistic and complicated.
The problem is that in the 40s, 50s & 60s exercises were tailored specifically to what did best for the female body and what did best for the male body. Today we don't do that we just let people exercise like masochistic adrenaline junkies without any actual understanding. The fitness rate for women between 1949-1968 was 98/100 while women today score on average 42/100 and even our best female athletes score only a 73/100. For men it is fairly similar with men from 1949-1968 scoring a 96/100 and men today score on average 45/100 and our best male athletes today score a 71/100. We really have gone down hill in fitness in the last 30+ yrs.
This looks so fun! My daily workouts are centred around half marathon training, and sometimes the additional weight training leaves me a little burnt out. I’ll give this a try!
Did you know that women in America from 1949-1968 scored a fit rate of 98/100 which compared to the average fit rate of women today which is a 42/100 and our best athletes score a little better with a 73/100. The main reason is because exercises like you saw Sage do were specifically tailored to the female body in the 1940s, 50s and 60s. The exercises were specifically perfected in the 50s and 60s with Debbie Drake who if you read her stuff and watch her videos she was a fitness genius (not guru) she took the time to perfect exercises that specifically benefit women at the highest degree without all the ridiculous burn out or intensity.
Thank you for these exercises that I can do. It is fun, and I look forward to doing them.
When I watch TV shows from the 40s to the 60s l know those women do something to stay trim and fit. I don’t picture any of them (in my mind) running or walking for exercise.
I knew there had to be something else they were doing. Thank you so much for doing the research you do to bring back other solutions for stay fit and trim. I look forward to what you can come up with next. In the mean time I will enjoy your 40s and 50s exercises.

Who knew exercise could look so cute! I think I’ll try these!
Great idea, fun!
This is going to be my new exercise routine. I love yoga and Pilates. Decades ago, US women had lower BMIs. It might had to do with their lifestyle. People rarely ate out, women did a lot of low impact exercise from household chores and these types of workout routines, and, perhaps, and they had more opportunities to socialize in a non- office/factory environment (which lowers stress). Gym memberships were uncommon, I believe. People in the Blue Zones live in a similar way.

I had a lot of fun doing these exercises with you! I also loved the vid style and the vintage music 🥰❤❤
It was a great extra to my pilates workout :) And the arm exercises were hard! Thank you so much!
My shoulders still hurt lol.
Omg love you Sage!!
Thank you, Sage! Found my new workout video! Love all your videos and you are precious!
This is my favorite era 😎
I adored this! And was harder than I expected lol! I would love more of these in the future, Sage :)
I love this. Very low impact. Might have to add this to my after work routine. Thank you Sage for sharing!!
Thanks so much for watching! 💕
Footy warmup in the loungeroom - what a great idea!!
Hi Sage. It looked fun watching you doing the exercises. Funny enough the first one you did I do everyday the second one is another which is similar to one I do also. The one where you lay down and lift your legs and you do sit ups using the chair I also do. I just made them up I didn't realize they were from the 1940s. Thank you Sage for doing these and showing us these. Marie
Wow this was really fun!
Thank you for your exercise videos! I never had a good health and I always was excused from sport lessons even when at school, so my shape is awful, and modern workout is not for me. I've been doing your Jack Lalanne video since late August, and it's super manageable for me! I couldn't quite keep up with this video, but I hope I'll learn everything. Thank you again ❤️
Gracias a ti ...!
Saludos.
Thank you for sharing your wonderful channel and content.
My how workouts over the decades, but they still have the same & great effect. I have to look into it & add them into my routine
Thank you 😊 I’ve made my workout with you, it was great 👍🏻
These less intense exercises are great for me as a disabled person!
I can actually do these! I don't have the rhythm for modern exercises, ha. I love your music choices. I'm a fan of all things 1940's and 50's so these videos are right up my alley.
I loved doing this workout!! You are the best!! This made my day!
Aw I’m so glad you liked it! ☺️💕
Holy cow. I did these along with you, now I see why women were so thin. I started sweating and getting worn out 10 minutes in lol. I think I'll be doing these during the weekdays while my husband is gone at work. These were great. Thank you for sharing them.
Well done! Some of those are classics, some became obsolete for good reasons, lol. Some are just bad Pilates, hahaha. Swinging legs, bicycles in the air, leg crossovers without the pelvis remaining rooted down, all risky for the back. But this whole routine can easily be modified and used for damn good results. I started out teaching aerobics and toning in high school, the Jane Fonda days, and I still love the old fashioned exercises. That started me on a 30 year career in fitness, nutrition and athletic training. This was a lot of fun!
Are you cleaning the house today? What did you have for dinner today? 🍂🍁😄😄
Me wishing do this and at the same time watching this in my bed 😂😂
When I was in school in the late 60's and early 70's we were doing the same exercises
I could hear my knees cracking just watching you kick haha. This was such a fun video!! Ill definitely try some of these!! :D
i would love to see a 1940's-50's video every week that i could keep up with!
I love this so much!!!! 🥰🥰🥰
