Unsafe Campsite for Us / Had to Leave / Oreville Campground Custer, SD / Freedom Hauler Problem Too

- Of the 25 campgrounds we stayed in on our Western Trip, this was the only one in which we had a problem such that we felt unsafe and had to leave. In the over 200 campsites we have stayed in over many years, we have only had a few issues, but this is the first one where we left.
Oreville Campground is a nice USACE campground in Custer, SD, but once we got there, we discovered it wasn't going to be safe for us in our reserved campsite. So we had to leave and try and find a place to stay in the middle of the summer tourist season in South Dakota in the Black Hills. Then the Freedom Hauler tote decides to act up and we can't back up properly, causing us a lot of frustration.

When you have to have a rig as big as yours, you are limited to where you can camp/park.
Thank you Captain Obvious.
Yep. That is why we plan 6 or more months in advance and look at aerial views and other TH-cam videos. Of the over 200 campsites we have stayed in, this is the first one we ever had to leave. It is more difficult when you take your home with you.
gotta love the comments about, you're entitled or your rig is too big, blah blah. you work your whole life for nice things, instead of having a house an maybe a camper, that you use 5 times a year, you have a house that you can take with you! and language? i would of been going off at myself way more than you. keep up the good work 👍👍
@@howardbales5967 excuse me, but i wasn’t implying they were entitled. I was stating a fact, SIZE does affect where you can park or drive.
@@billysprague6219 you’re welcome professor snarky
Good Video! This Video just reinforces the reason why I just own a little Casita . I can camp anyplace . 😬😁👍
Well there ya go. Different strokes for different strokes. Thanks for watching.

Yup! I will check out some of your play list .😁

I love my 14 ft trailer!
@@DontStepInTheGreaseI bet you hit your head a lot in 14’ trailer !
I camped there summer 2023. I had site 14. Pull over was new to me as well. I loved it for the privacy. I didn't have a big-ass rig and was very comfortable.
Been to over 200 sites and that's the only one we've ever seen with the pull-overs.
I'm sticking with my van. Less high blood pressure.
Definitely true, but since it's our home, we'd kill each other in a van.
Too stressful camping with that setup
In the 6 years of nearly full-timing it, we have only had a few issues. This is the first time we had to leave. It's our home, so it works for us but I get it...stress is no fun.
I always get such a kick out of it when people who bring a HOUSE with them call it "camping" 😂 🤣
Since it is our house, we do bring it....glamping. :)
A bit if..Overkill....why do two people, need so muvh stuff?
We recently retired, sold our home and almost everything we owned, and full time RV now so our 5th wheel camper is our home.
@@carolclover1238 Because we can. Bet you live in more than 590 sq ft.
Ya...maybe go a little smaller
What Dave isnt good at is being calm, cool and collected when encountering adversity. Vacationing with him must be torture.
There was a lot going on that day and he can have a short fuse. Usually, not a problem. No torture. :)
I subscribed, however, unsubscribed after hearing how he talked to the host. Kindness is key.
We bought our 29' 5er this year for specify this type of campground. It fits almost anywhere.
That would be a little tight for us fulltiming.
Wow! I just can’t subscribe to a channel where individuals break into anger so easily.
That is the only one of hundreds of videos we have.
@@WattsOnWheelsBut it is the first one I've seen.
No thanks. Ya'll are doing everything wrong and complaining about it.
My favorite word begins with F. I know when strong language is acceptable and when it isn't. You chose to go to an unsuitable campground, have a temper tantrum, and then try to make an excuse.
Your Rig is exceptionally large and heavy. Understand your limitations and plan for them.
My 5 Volvo D13s and 53' trailers had no business being parked in a subdivision. So I rented a legal, appropriate place to park them during hometime.
Seriously?
Makes me appreciate my 16' sportsman. Not out to impress, just going camping.
Not out to impress, it's our home.
I wouldn’t even consider that a campsite
Totally agree.
Or a rig that BIG !
Been thinking about a motorhome or trailer. But now i need to think smaller.
We may down size one day, but not yet. Still want to take long trips.
I was stressed out driving a 35 foot RV. This is something else entirely.
Yep, we all have stressful days regardless of the size of the RV. At least it had a happy ending.
Dave. Try changing out your wiring harness plugs for ez connector plugs. They are sealed and magnetic and work great
Haven't heard of them. Thanks for the tip.
One of the benefits of tent camping is that I find good spots where big rigs can't fit in. When it comes to getting a good spot, less is more.
True. You're never too big.
The Way To Camp Is Tent R. V.Camping Go Find home property campgrounds are Not For R. V
I used to tent camp. Then I began having trouble kneeling down and crawling into the tent. So I bought a cute little tent trailer, a Sylvansport GO. Camped in that for several years, until I began having problems with cranking it up (tent is in the hard roof). So this year I got a self-contained travel trailer. It is what it is. I tent camped ate Orville back in 2016. I get my federal owned campsites at 50%, because I am a disabled veteran.
We have an Oliver Legacy Elite II and we fit EVERYWHERE! That's why we bought it.
12 years of fulltiming. First rig was a huge 5th wheel that I hauled from the deep south to Alaska. But I found it to be so limiting. As subsequent rigs became smaller, my adventures became bigger. Everyone’s journey is different. Hope yours meets all your expectations. Good luck to you. 🥃
I see the appeal of having this rig to stay someplace 3-9 months at a time. Watching this gives me anxiety.
Our journey's have met our expectations such that we keep doing it. Safe travels to you all and have fun.
This is why we have a 29' travel trailer! In and out of any gas station, we can park the trailer just about anywhere. No worries!
One day we may downsize when we have a house again. But for now, since it's our house, it works well for us.
This is precisely why we sold our HDT. Too stressful wondering if you could fit into half of the campgrounds in this country. 95% of the time the people working in the office don’t even know what type of rig it is or if it will fit. We now have an Ford F450 with an Arctic Fox truck camper and pull our SMART car behind that for out-of-the-way places and use our fifth wheel camper for wintering in Florida. Win-win situation for us all the way around.
Sounds like a great plan you guys worked out.
I have been camping for many years with my small camper but have had a couple of times where there was no campsite available. I then park wherever I can and grab my tent. Always room in the tent area.
We always find room at a Walmart too. But then it becomes expensive because you go shopping. LOL
Hi folks You do a great Job! It great you have made friends and can camp together. I have a smaller Class B Plus 23 feet. I travel alone with my little dog. We have a great time but I need my power. It had 30 amps I just added 20 amps for my Kitchen now my coffee pot works with the Toaster. Silly things that I don’t have to struggle with now. In summer that Roof air is on. My music to or a movie I have an all electric rig except the heat and water heater.
Sounds great! Glad you got everything working well for you. We just got a dog, so now we have to break him into camping.
We went there and loved that CG. Our TT is only 25’. Good to know by this experience, if there is any question for us, we should take a walk first. Anxious to see your next vid.
It's a great campground for small RVs, especially the location and price.
Beautiful campground, love the trees 😊
It is a nice campground, just not for big rigs.
It is a USFS campground. Don’t expect the amenities for your beast. If you’re going to USFS sites, travel small. Most are excellent for tents and small campers
We've been to many. They are very nice and we don't care to have many amenities. We like the woods.
It’s not like there’s a bunch of traffic? Im confused?
Can't help you with that. Maybe watch again.
I would have left right then. Of course your size of the rig doesn't help much. Hope you dont have to stay long,?
Leaving and meeting up with our friends to boondock ended up being great.
I wouldn’t want to try to put that big rig anyplace.
Pilot, Flying J, or Love's Truck Stops. Or Iowa 80.
That is not a suitable rig for "camping".
As a former driver and company owner, I have zero patience for people who think they can take a road tractor into any campground in the US. The equipment isn't built for camping. The campground isn't built forthe equipment.
Simple as.
There are more and more people that are and in almost 7 years on the road, this is the first time we had to leave a campground.
We have a 21 foot hybrid can get in just about any campground.
That's great. Ours is our home, and we'd kill each other in that. :)
We had the same thing happen to us in Colorado with our 40 ft diesel pusher. The site said pull through that accommodated our size and upon arrival it was a ‘pull off’ site and no way we were fitting in space. By chance a beautiful no reservation site was available and we stayed for 3 days. Some days it works out and some days it doesn’t. Safe travels.
Glad to hear we aren't the only ones. You got lucky. Well, so did we in the end. Stuff happens to everyone out there no matter the size.
You can always look ahead using Google Earth.
We've never paid a daily pet fee - 6 years on the road. Is thi now a 'thing'?
I don't know if they ever actually collect. We've been in multiple sites that state pay extra beyond 2 vehicles and have never had to pay except at Quartzsite, AZ boondocking. Go figure.
And this is why you are my favorite TH-camrs!!! You keep it real and highlight what struggles us Big Rigs face and you don’t sugar code it. THANK YOU!
We appreciate that as you can see from some of the comments, others don't quite agree. But since it is our home, we prefer our set up vs. a Van or 24 footer. And everyone has a bad RV day regardless of their size. 😁
What a nerve wracking experience! Thank you for the very thorough review and being transparent. You guys are very long, but, I feel like you did your homework before booking! Host could have been a lot more helpful, but even then, it really doesn't seem safe for bigger rigs. They should have that on their website. Appreciate your honesty. We just found you, new subscriber! -Michelle
Thanks for subscribing. We do a lot of homework before reserving campsites and have had only a few issues over the past 6 years. But stuff happens to all of us at any size.
For sure. @@WattsOnWheels
Run your ass over? Nice talk
Drove a semi for years. Don't think I would enjoy camping with one.
Nope. That whole ordeal was unnecessary.
That access road looks big enough for a large golf cart, not for backing in a big rig.
Sure was. That was crazy.
Big rig. Big problems.
Little rigs, little problems. We all have them sometime.
I also worked as a yard haulser for a trucking distribution center backing trailers and setting up triples all day. Got so I could back doubles inside of the building with 2" on each mirror. But I gotta say, as much as I admire your rig, when I load out my RV for camping I prefer leaving all my hassles behind. Nice rig but seems to eliminate everywhere I go with my class-c 4X4 with my BMW 800GS across the back. Great video, thanks for sharing your moments where most RV'ers have been LOL at one point, or two..
Hats off to you for backing doubles. I guess we like to take our hassles with us. Somehow it always seems to work out.
Phew! I'm glad I car camp for now. I can't imagine doing that as it was difficult for a very seasoned driver. That place needs to fix their website and give correct info!!
Thanks for watching. You might be interested in this video (Solo Woman Full Time Boondocking) th-cam.com/video/MmBx15ZRYHI/w-d-xo.html
You guys are a hoot!! Orville is a great campground for normal people with normal size gear. You were the problem here, not the CG. And the Mister must be a joy to travel with 🤮
Nice campground and we definitely would not have stayed there if we were provided with correct information. Our fault for not walking the campground first.
Been there, done that! The Thousand Trails park in Ft.Lauderdale comes to mind just off Oakland Park Blvd. You need a shoe horn to get into that park. Sunshine something! Never again! Safe travels!
We have had issues with TT parks before and after looking at aerial views, decide to skip some of them.
With such a sizable rig and understanding that there were few amenities, I might have walked the sites first. I have fewer worries with my C-Class Jayco 34’ on its Ford 450 Super Duty chassis. Whenever I’m in doubt, boondocking is always on my mind.
Yeah, boondocking can be a great way to enjoy the scenery and area.
I have a 32 foot travel trailer and this is one of my worries going to an unfamiliar campground. A lot of these older campgrounds cannot accommodate these larger campers.
Yep. You try to do the homework the best you can. Especially if someone else has already made a video on the campground.
I would suggest leaving and going to Oraville campground it’s huge you can pull right through but it’s more expensive and you have electricity. You have dump at your trailer. You have everything you need. I wouldn’t stay at these places I’ve tried it to nightmare and there’s no way to get electricity who wants that I mean Tent days are over. Also, Oraville campground is close to store restaurant. They have some supplies if I remember correctly for your camper.
Cannot find any other Oreville Campground besides this one. Where is it located?
I think we saw you at On-Ur-Wa RV Park off of I 29 in Iowa. If not, a rig just like yours. We were headed to Rapid City. We had the class A with a motorcycle/car dolly.
Yes we were there. Small world isnt it.
Unbelievable that someone could even think that's camping.
Crazy isn't it.
I’m 77 sprinter vans work for me. Luxury/Security 4X4 solar/ generator. Parking easy.
Sounds like that works great for you. But since this is our home, we'd kill each other in something that small. :)
I was a camp host at an Army Corp of Engineers campground and I learned that large rigs do not do well in the parks. Even if the site is listed with large dimensions there are often access problems throughout the parks. The vast majority are decades old not anticipating large RV’s.
We don't have any problems in most of them and we have stayed in a lot across the US. However, you are right, sometimes they will have long sites but the roads are narrow with ditches. They are still our favorite.
A great rig and a beautiful home.
Thanks so much. Appreciate the "nice" comment.
Good that you guys post about these camp grounds so we know to avoid! Glad it all worked out…jen and mark seem to know great places!
Jen and Mark have their domicile there, so they know the area very well. They were our tour guides while we were in SD. An awesome couple.
If you have a monstrously huge rig, you won't be able to visit the majority of State and Federal Campgrounds. Those Big Rigs are designed for the RV Resorts like Thousand Trails, only.
Lite,n up dude. Always remember you living the dream. But you did do a great job turning the rig around.
Yes we are. We are blessed.
You got to expect a bunch of tight spots when you pull your RV with a truck not intended for recreational use.
To us that is not a spot, it's a pullover to the curb.
I know where that place at we drove past there many years ago. WE stayed at a camp place something like, J ranch, really nice park will accommodate big rigs near by.
That's good to know. Thanks for the tip.
Like you said... why she didn't tell you it was "curbside" parking and the correct way to pull into that spot is beyond me. I would never have been able to sleep for fear the slides would have been hit by some RVer. We stayed in Homolovi State Park - I think in New Mexico that had sites on the side but they were pull through that made a 1/2 circle - completely off the main camp road.. Glad you were able to move over to a boondocking spot with friends....
Yeh, it would have saved us a lot of frustration.
you two crack me up lol
Glad you get a chuckle out of us. Gotta have fun.
I’m glad you’re about safety of yourself and others my Semi truck and 48 ft moving van conversion into a Motorhome wouldn’t fit either they need to reclassify there listing on the website pull over not pull threws 😂Dave deserves some R/R Whisky Happy Holidays 🎊🎁✝️🇺🇸
Yeah, that was a first for us. Hey, we both deserve some R/R whiskey on that one. LOL. Happy Holidays to you too.
This campground is really smaller than this fish eye lens shows. The road is about single lane, spots are small, no one wants their bedroom end hanging over a bluff.
True. Very nice for small RVs.
We have tent camped at that campground. It is beautiful.
It is a very pretty campground.
Our cat is 20 lb he's not overweight we have videos of him but do you see many people with cats
Actually the people we ended up boondocking with have a cat (full time RVers too). We actually saw one being walked on a leash once. And one of our best friends takes their cat with them too. So yes, they are definitely out there.
Wow! That's like driving a big rig carrying 2 tiny rigs, while hauling a home rig, that's towing a rig that hauls a tiny car rig. That's a lot of stuff going on.
Now if only we could figure out how to tow a boat too. 😊
Truck, boat, truck. Like the Squidbillies.
Probably hindsight could you have unhooked the tote and gotten far enough over? Curious about how those totes work. I’ve driven truck for many years, but never doubles so I’m unfamiliar with how the air and electrical work with the unit when backing. Is your rig an automatic? We have a43’ 5th wheel and figured an f450 will be a good vehicle although I have thought about pulling with a big rig, figured we’d be too long to get around and enjoy our travels. ✌
Unhooking and re-hooking the tote is a pain. We found out we had pinched wires that was making the tote not work periodically. Since the tote is connected to the RV at 2 points, it is considered an extension of the RV, thus not pulling doubles. Yes our truck has i-shift. F450 is pretty heavy duty. We choose the HDT for safety, especially out in the mountains and the fact that we spend most of our time traveling.
Don’t expect to get into these kind of campgrounds with such a big rig. These campgrounds were built for smaller rigs.
If it had been a true pull thru we would have been ok. All ended up fir the better in the end.
Glad to find your site, happy camping 😎
The boondocking worked out great with Mark and Jen.
I hope you left a review on-line to warn any future campers of the problems you had. Seems like a campground for trailers 30ft and under
I did. Great campground for small rigs.
We were in the jewel cave! I'm normally clostrophobic but I was fine in this cave because it was huge! Just love the glistening Black Hills around the Custer area!
We love it out there. Just so beautiful. Glad you had a good time.
I just found your channel. That is some rig you have. How long is total, Thanks for the video.
Hi. We are 76 feet, but we are not commercial.
Have to pick the right site when parking anywhere.
Well of course, but proper info on their websites is helpful.
Hearing all the bleeps brought back memories rv camping with my dad😂
Hoping they were good memories. 😁
OMG! I felt the stress. That's was definitely not a campsite!
More like a pull over for the day in your car and have a picnic then leave.
Dave, you have a doppelganger who lives right here in the Black Hills. I am a local and you are a spitting image of my dad. Like, it's scary how much you look like him. Im about to call you "pops." 😂
LOL. Your dad is a very handsome man, if I say so myself. 😆
We did that trip, Boondocking anytime we could. Great information.
We'd love to go back out west again...it is so beautiful.
Hi guys... My hair started falling out just watching the video... If I had gotten close to the road In the process of turning around I think I would have continued straight on out.... It's bad enough when you have to deal with People that have no clue as to what they're talking about and then the equipment decides to start acting up.... Where did you go to boondock in that area with mark and gen ?.... We are so glad everything worked as self out... Thanks for the video...J&A
We're still having some issues with the air on the tote. Think we got it narrowed down to us pinching a wire under the chock. Going to reroute and see if that helps.
Here they'd call that a "hiker/bicycle" camp area and add a bunch more sites but only charging like 5 bucks a night for each. What you're showing looks more like rest area overnighting, which is also valid (and free); when the main truck area is full you'll see semi trucks staged along the exit/entrance and they'll walk in for coffee (many here have volunteers with coffeepots) and bathrooms.
At any price that was unreasonable accommodations for your use case. If you were on motorcycles you'd been golden - 12 bucks for a site with few people parked and partying near you is not too shabby at all
Surprising how many times we have met bikers in campgrounds and then end up riding with them. :)
Wow, air needs fixed...all because you didn't want the door to the road...
Sites are set up with the picnic tables and fire pits on the side of the RV door not such that you have to walk out into a narrow street and around your rig to it. If you have little kids or pets, good luck with that. But mostly, we didn't want our slides to get hit.
I'm sure all the other "campers" are elated when you pull up with that train wreck
They all come out to check it out and say things like "You're living my dream".
Do you need a Class A CDL for your rig?
No, it is titled as a motorhome.
Wow!! That’s crazy. I wouldn’t feel safe there. Never seen a pull over like that. Stressful. Thanks for the warning❤Zack & Linda
Our pleasure! Thx for watching.
When arriving at an unfamiliar campground we will walk it first before drving up.
Yep....lesson learned.
I would be a nervous wreck driving a camper that big.
Definitely feel safer in this going through the mountains with no guardrails and a mile down the side of the mountain. The truck has no problem up or down and especially to stop in an emergency (which we have had to do).
Yeah overkill on the RV rig. No one needs that big a rig.
When it's your home, you do.
When in that area we stay at Game Lodge Campground and love it there. We’re in a 35 ft Winnebago Class A pulling our SUV. Check out their sites when in the area but to get in you have to book at least a year in advance. Nicest campground we’ve seen in that area.
Thanks for the tip.
YES! big rigs is not the answer to travel in. Big rigs only if you go to a place where you go to point A, point B, you say long time. To travel freely to have fun, go small and enjoy talk to the ones been there done it you name it, all over. It's like this, do you want to be around a person is always negative. I don't want to have big rid to whole me down and limited. Look it takes money to get a camp property to be develop people don't have all that money to build camp site will accommodate big rigs back in the days. What changing the people the demand on big rigs put the infrastructure on camp place is not there for big rigs. You find them only in different locations. Like this Biden wants us to drive Electric cars the infrastructure of charging cars not their. So why buy electric cars.
Big rig IS the answer for us and many more since it is our home and we want to travel the US in comfort. We have stayed in over 200 campsites, but this is the first one we had to leave and that was only because it was unsafe. Everyone has their preference on how they want to camp and what works for them may not work for others. It's all for fun, meeting people and seeing this awesome country.

It ended up working great.
I am so jealous, lol. Working on the bus is almost done, trying to find an income for on the road! They definitely need to redo the road directions and be clear on asking about the camper size.
We always come across a lot of people that work from their RVs. Not sure what they do, but I know they always need a good internet connection.
That is definitely going to be a key point for me.@@WattsOnWheels

Hearing your husband talk and "commenting" 😅 sounds like my husband anywhere he drives. It starts often times before we even get out of our sub division. Lol. Glad it's not just me. 😂❤Thank you for sharing this video. Ya...potty mouths...wouldnt want to camp by you
@WattsOnWheels :Oh,Lord no! I can't take it in bose stereo! Lol.
Why would you tolerate abusive behavior. Yes, it's verbal. No, your husband doesn't physically harm you.
But childish, verbal outbursts ARE abusive. If they cause you mental and physical stress, you are being harmed.

😮 MOST RV'S AREN'T PULLED WITH HUGE TRUCKS EITHERS ! 😂
And most people don't live in their RVs and bring their toys with them. Works for us and many more people that we know due to the safety they provide pulling such a heavy RV.
calm down
two people with a rig that size..a car and two motorbikes?! Go to Yuma, they have acres to turn around ! i know this area, you are to big even on the black top highway.
Been to Yuma a couple of times and Quartzsite too and will be back. We had never been to SD, MT, WY and wanted to see all the beauty there.
In my limited travels when I hear “ Corp of Engineers “ campground I don’t think “ RV trailer park “. I think more rustic but that is just me.
They usually are more rustic and along lakes or rivers with lots of space in between with trees. We like the "camp" feeling vs. a "resort". Everyone has their own preference.

😂 I drove truck for 36yrs. Like Dave I don't have any hair😊. The customer would always say theirs a big turn around 😮 yea for a UPS delivery package. Glad you still had a good time.
For another video how about telling us what kind of insurance you had to get with the big rig?
Thanks for all the videos.
Karen keep up the good work on the knee.
Yeah, and don't worry about the low hanging tree. :) We have both the RV and truck insured by Safeco.
My wife and I are travelers with a 40' rig plus a tow car. We have chalked up a couple of stops like that, and it's all part of the game.
That's right. There are good and bad RV days regardless of your size.
Wow! The temper on this guy. I understand it’s a pain but maybe not film this on TH-cam.
Did you hear any foul language ? I do believe it was beeped out . Angel 😇….NAH…
It's reality. Stuff happens to everyone.
I like this guy- a little I guess he bought the exact rig youd want if you want to go around the country cussing and being angry.
Im a new viewer and im wondering with a rig that long is it a common problem to find a camping spot that will accomodate you?
In over 6 years and 200 campsites, this is the first time we had to leave. We've had some tight ones, but this is the only time we felt unsafe. If it wasn't directly on the road, we could have stayed there.
CLICK BAIT title that may needlessly hurt this campground. Good campground and good report, but bad choice. Too bad your rig didn't fit such a nice destination. Failing to plan means planning to fail! You were smart to not stay with your slides out for even a night or two. Glad you found a safe spot with friends.
Thanks for watching
Someone knocked on my minivan at 7 PM at Smokemont Campground in Smoky Mountain National Park. He asked if he can switch his camp site for mine because his 50 feet camper won't fit. I gave him my site but after 30 minutes he still cannot get his rig settle in my site. Eventually he left.😂
OMG. You were super kind. We enjoy watching people go in and out a dozen times to get into easy sites, much less difficult ones.
Not only that all the noise she made with that big rig in that Campground I would have been pissed off
About the same as a big motorhome...both have diesels.
It is great that you guys do a campground tour showing all the camp sites. Then we all can see if our rigs will fit and in which site. Thank you again. Stay safe out there. Keep up the good work.
Our pleasure! Thx for watching.
