Hi. I'm a contemporary fantasy author and technical editor. I love storytelling discussions--especially if it's speculative fiction based. On this channel I tend to lean into speculative fiction (fantasy, science fiction, and horror) deep dives and analysis but romance and thriller also make frequent guest appearances.
I'm here for the discussion! As an editor, my commentary leans toward critical. I seek to polish and improve any rough edges, but that doesn't mean I didn't enjoy the story. Digging in is just how I engage with media, and if this isn't your style that's ok. I want it to be inquisitive, friendly conversations that engage both readers and writers. We should center the conversation on the story or the larger body of works and avoid generalization that may be hurtful.
Authors, if it's a review on something you had a hand in, please refrain from interacting.

Suck-tion hehe 😂
: )
So cool that you did this with us. This was my first time doing this challenge
Mine too. It was a fun way to start of the reading year though.
How can I contact you?
I appreciate your interest but I'm not looking for consulting or coaching services at this time.
@jessicadoneganreads ok
I find quite a few of the free ebooks are duds lol but we try. Thanks for participating
Yes, I love giving authors a chance. And this was the perfect way to push me into finally reading all those ebooks I'm just collecting on FMO
"read what you own" im trying really hard not to add to my backlog lol
Me too. At this point I'm just trying to the reading part, I haven't stopped picking up free ebooks, so it's not exactly bringing the list down 🤣
In your TH-cam Channel, I have noticed that your videos have not done SEO. Here are some other details: No SEO friendly Title, Description is too short & no keywords in description No video Tag are given End Screen is not added in video Videos are not share on Social media like Facebook ,Instagram, Twitter, Reddit, Linkedin, Video SEO score is empty No Eye catching Thumbnail As a result, You video doesn’t reach your targeted viewers, You do not get subscribers.
Thanks for the engagement. This specific video isn't an SEO kind of release, but if you look at the channel as a whole, there's a ton of direct titles and thumbnails that basically tell a viewer it's a review or deep dive video of X thing. Tags do not matter and are a waste of time in the TH-cam landscape. End screens have fallen out of trend. I don't engage in other social media. Ouch on the thumbnail though. You get the point there.
@jessicadoneganreads Yes you are using thumbnail it is very good it attracts viewers but your SEO score is very low due to which the video is not going to the audience your video has no ranking rank keywords in the leave list but if you SEO your video the views subscribe will increase quickly thanks.

Hello dear, Hope you are well. Here are some advanced plans for your TH-cam channel that will help you make TH-cam a reality. I have shown your TH-cam channel, your video content is of very good quality but your video has no views and no likes and comments. But there are some problems with your channel, like your video is not SEO. If you do SEO for your video then your channel will rank and reach your target audience and the subscribers and views of the channel will increase day by day.

appreciate you and your videos so much 😊
Awe thank you, you're so kind. I'm glad you like the channel ☺️
Gorgeous! Even the dressing gown 😂
What annoys me the most: People actually think that is the best the Fantasy genre has to offer ... they don't even label and advertise it as Romantasy, but High Fantasy.
I haven't seen that yet, but I can see why that would be really annoying.
Yes! I see this in so many FB book groups. Most of these ladies only started picking up reading like a year or two ago and have NO CLUE what else is out there. They're only reading BookTok recs so they really just haven't been exposed to good fantasy or the difference in fantasy versus romantasy.
Yes, I have a couple IRL friends like that too. I like asking them what they liked about 4th Wing so I can direct them to better reads for them.
Seems like an interesting show, ill have to check it out along with Severance 😮 also good job you are great 😊
Silo is awesome, and I wanna check out Severance sometime too.
"Vie la révolution" ???? its "VIVE la Révolution!" 🙄
Good catch
@@jessicadoneganreads Glad I could help.
thanks for helping us save money! Also love that top : )
Thank you. It's surprising how often just pausing and thinking about it can save you some money.
i want them but the dollars are real. Library girly here
Yes, you're always so good about using the library. I've seeing those glossy cover protectors in your monthly wrap-ups that let me know our public system is working at least in some states. Here my options aren't quite up to the standard my MA upraising set 😮💨
You are great 😊
Thank you, you're so sweet.
I really appreciate your thoughts on the Cate C Wells 5 pack series, and the new book. The most recent one left a bad taste in my mouth, and hearing that some of the things I also had an issue with in prior books do not get better, I think I will not be returning to the series.
I glad I could help and it's nice to hear I'm not alone. Sometimes you see a book or series everyone is universally loving and wonder if you're the issue lol. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy for anyone still enjoying the series, I just am not there anymore.
😍
you have some interesting variety in here. You always come through with some fun shifters. Even when bad they are fun
Thank you. I can't keep away from shifter stories for long, but I find more duds or "so bad it's good" than actually good 😅. Oh well.
@@jessicadoneganreads the premise is just so attractive. Luckily there is lots to choose from
Happy new year! 😊
Happy New Year to you too! 🎉
You will have a great 2025 😊
I hope so. Happy 2025 to you too.
Merry Xmas! You look sensational! 🎉
Thanks Merry Christmas and happy new year to you too.
Try the audiobook!! It's absolutely amazing!!! 😍
I'm glad you enjoyed listening to it. I'm not sure how much that would have helped my experience with this one though.
So basically Boxing Helena but way worse. Great video ❤
Thank you,. I haven't read Boxing Helena but I'll have to check it out.
@@jessicadoneganreads not a book, but a movie. A lot lighter on the horror aspect, goes deeper into the psychology of both parties involved.
So disturbing yet the film was so good. The casting was perfect. One of my favorites.
never heard of this book, and I’m all set , no thank you🤣
I can understand that, it's not a book for everyone but hopefully the video helps this book find its audience too.
Your videos are absolutely inspiring and outstanding 👍🏻
Thanks so much! That means a lot 😊
: )
^_^
Brilliant video 👍🏻
Thanks 👍
Thank you!! Despite loving this series I was not looking forward to re-reading the first 5 books!
No problem, I'm here to help ^_^
Until you pointed it out, I had not realized my issue with SJM was her inability to write action/battle scenes. I hated Kingdom of Ash and ACOWAR so much it took years to continue on with her other books, and while I enjoyed AOSF I have not truly enjoyed anything else by her the way I did before her two finales came out. This is a really great video and concept too; I have struggled with why I don't enjoy romantasy even though I feel like I should like it, and you put it really well. The nebulousness of everything just leaves me so lost I can't truly enjoy them the way I want because I'm so lost and unsatisfied by the world building and relationships, that by the end of the book/series I don't even remember pertinent plot details, let alone all the little moments that make up the story and world
Thank you ❤️. From what I've seen, the authors seems to struggle to give us so many detailed elements. There's a temptation to tie the character into the fantasy elements, but I think that does more harm than help when the "magic" explains all the character building moments. I think they could make an excellent Romantasy, I just don't think the rapid release format gives people enough time or editing passes to really cook that series up for us.
Love your earrings 💖
Thank you ☺️
I hate how everyone writes curvy characters as if it's done taboo thing still. "I love you despite your weight", "I like large women". Like, we know the characters plus sized, just leave it there and stop having other characters say it lol
Yeah, this one didn't even do that so much. It was more like the lead was a taller size 14 and she wanted to feel dainty and dragon man was sooooo big and strong that she got to experience that for the first time 🙄. I don't really see how this is good wish fulfillment for ladies who are tall or curvy as they're not gonna experience being "so small" any more than my 5' is gonna meet a partner and suddenly be the go-to person to g et stuff off the top shelf.
@jessicadoneganreads maybe this is just the author letting out internal desires? I don't get it personally but hopefully some of there resonate with the fantasy for themselves.
Don’t worry, Gabriel is going to be a main character next season. Rolin Jones has already talked about it.
One more thing to make me hyped for season 3 🎉
Amazing 😍
Thanks 🤗
Love the shirt! Great video today as well 👍
Thank you. Obviously a huge Halloween/scary stuff person overhear so I've got to represent with the horror seats and fun outfits.
@jessicadoneganreads more fun outfits the better! Haha
I like your outfit. This book has a lot going on. You did a great breakdown with your points.
Thank you. ❤️
I loved the shape of water, it was such an interesting film.
Yes. Looking back on it, it's kind of a wild moment in theater history. Just goes to show everyone loves a good romance
Thank you, Jessica 😊
No problem I really liked this one
Sorry i didnt hook you this time. 😮
Can't win them all. I appreciated that it was well written even if the storyline wasn't for me.
an advice as a subscriber is. it’s hard to focus on what your saying when your face is to far from the camera there is a lot of back ground, also need to be clear visually what are you talking about for people
Thanks for the advice. Do you think I do better with this on more recent videos or would you still prefer I crop closer to my head?
I read this last year I think. I think I gave it 3 stars.
Glad you enjoyed it. I gave it 4 stars but I'm a sucker for anything even a little goth-y.
Great video! She's back! 😊
Thanks, glad to be back
Finally some review that isn't spewing blind admiration at this bad novel. Its as if people thought that purely capitalism = cannibalism metaphor is enough to make this book feel important or good. But books ain't just metaphors and allegories they (might) dress in. I could chew a bit the whole capitalism metaphor and suspend my belief for this dystopia, but the whole novel felt broken to me beyond saving due to characters more than due to a plot or the world its set in. Marcos and his family is utterly unbelievable in the context they are described. Marcos is said to be from a loving family and author takes time to remind us of that and yet his sister and - subsequently him - is described how they are described, doing things they are described doing. To me that was a big no no. You can't have such fucked up characters from loving, caring families. It was brutal just for sake of brutality. Plus there is no meat on the bones here. Whole book just feels like a little travelogue around institutions running this new cannibalism reality without any time to actually develop characters. We're just supposed to take at face value every single judgment about characters that Marcos does as if his analysis is the Holy Writ, such as twins are evil, his sister is evil, everyone is evil... No space for what ifs, no space for meaningful dialogue, no space for... dystopia. How are we supposed to believe in this world when nobody even tries to sell it realistically? Characters are just there to sell its groseness, not its veracity. Closest we come to anything actually meaningful is in scene with Urlet who is the only character that actually is close to anything resembling sense and thought in this novel, but a few lines don't constitute a redeeming quality for the whole novel. It lacked believable characterization and through it any sense of believability in its own world. It was said to be 20 years after the big change and yet people act as if this has been a thing for hundreds of years, not batting an eye to anything. This book could have been SO MUCH MORE. If you spend time writing such a sick world, you better have something better in your sleeve than just a capitalism metaphor. I'm not gonna pretend the book is great just cos it critiques predatory aspects of capitalism via cannibalism. That's not enough. It might work in an essay as a one-off comparison, but not in a 200+ page novel that has nothing to say except the things it wants you to imagine (like capitalism=bad; humans=bad) and hopes that you will fill in the rest. When I think of dystopias, I think of Aldous Huxley and something that doesn't just picture awful worlds for sake of awful worlds and a metaphor, but something that paints an awful world to delve into something important. Tender is the flesh never delves into anything, not for long and not enough. There isn't a single truly dystopian-novel-worthy dialogue or exploration in this novel that would justify the horrible scenes we have to wade through. Brave New World had many. And any responsible author of such works should have something more to say than just flash around with a metaphor dressed in shock factor.
Thank you, I do think we're a minority opinion here, but oh well. I really am fine with the world building, it's the characters and plot that let the novel down. I think maybe we could have gone meaner to make the story more realistic. Like if Marcos had to fear others would take exception to his temporary vegetarianism and kill him. Making it clear you're either the eater or the food and raising the stakes as a whole might have helped. That plus tying the loss of his child into part of the new meat industry--offically vs his home birth thing. What happens at his house makes him horrible but it doesn't damn the machine that allows for all of it as directly as I'd have liked. And yes I feel Marco's sister and the twins and his wife are all demonized to an unfair degree. Part of what makes dystopia work is for the other characters to be human, for us to want redemption for them or to empathize with them in some way shape or form. I think of the Giver and the intense conflict the protagonist has when he realizes what his childhood friend does to the elderly and babies as a "Carer" or how his growing awareness makes him struggle with his relationships with is parents. Or I think of The Handmaid's Tale and the varied lens one could see several characters as villains or heroes or just trapped and trying to survive. There's a lot to them in so little that makes it engaging to come back to the story and ponder them again. There's nothing but frustration that makes me want to re-examine Marcos and his life.
@@jessicadoneganreads Agreed. Haven't read Handmaid's Tale or The Giver, but the grasp on the core of the issue it poses remains very much a thing this novel lacks. Solid idea about the conflict with the child and vegetarianism you propose! Overall there is an insane amount of missed opportunities in this book. I kept imagining all the great things this topic could have explored and got none. For example - who was chosen to be the "human cattle" and why? Which class of people and how? Where were they pulled from, how was it enforced/perceived? Also, you would imagine there would be much more groups with different voices, actual resistance and humanitarian revolt of either smaller or larger significance, but significance either way. Communicating with them could create wonderful opportunities to explore human nature and topics author wished to cover. Author tries to also bring religion into the mix, but shows lack of understanding of both religion and the way its run, at least on behalf of Catholic Church. Its a miracle if something changes in half a century in the Vatican and she hopes to make us believe somehow there are church denominations on board with this inhumane thing 20 years in? I think even the book itself reveals its own faults in way its framed. We are always moving between "cannibalism institutions" places, lets say, to Marcos's house to a very generic city description and countryside with deserted zoo. Never really got to tap the pulse of society experiencing this. Why? Because its just too crazy, it just wouldn't let itself be portrayed naturally. Dinner scene with the last goodbye in memory of Marcus' father got close, but even that ended quickly and meerely scratched the surface of options available. Sorry for long post, but I have finished this novel yesterday and still can't let go of my sheeer disappointment in it. I have just one more thing that annoyed me tremendously and its that weird insistance of Marcos to believe animal virus isn't real. No friggin' way this virus could be kept under wraps by millions of scientists all over the world. There isn't a force of nature capable enough to force so many people into silence on the matter, let alone a people force to keep them all conspired. Hell, even a layman can buy a microscope and conduct experiments to prove such a thing is bollocks if it were. The whole uncertainty thing about animal virus being real just acted as a nail in the coffin to the whole believability issue of a premise for me.
I didn’t like this book, and so many people told me it was because I “didn’t get it.” I got it, I just think it was presented poorly!
Agreed. But I'm still excited to read her upcoming release. There's enough good writing in this one that I look forward to better in the future.
😊
Awesome recap! Ready to dive into the last book
Thank you and happy reading ^_^
This was so helpful prior to reading Goldfinch!
II'm glad it got you ready to finish the series ^_^. Happy reading.
yay youre back : )
Yes and just in time for Halloween season. It's not going to be as big or cohesive project as previous years but I've got some fun scares planned. So hopefully it's smooth sailing from here. ^_^
