my modern american history teacher used this video to demonstrate to us a few weeks ago and we loved it! cant belive i found it again.
This is an Excellent Teacher. Thank you for making it so clear....and interesting, I might add.
I'm so happy you covered this, Khan. I recall reading that some major US electoral candidates who shall remain nameless didn't know the difference between North and South Korea. How can you decide major policy when you don't know basic world history and the names of your allies/enemies?
This guy really knows what he's talking about. He sums it up and makes it easy to understand.
THANK YOU SO MUCH.
I am glad that someone actually cares about the Korean War and its facts. Thank you for taking the time to post this video.
Thank you very much for creating these eye opening videos about history of the world. I learn too many things from you. So thank you very much. I hope all the best for you and your team. ❤
Thanks! Great job on explaining it clearly and concisely. God bless.
Thank you Sal for another awesome video!
webkinzgeek18 . yeah... I also learnt so much. was not bogged down with details: but well - paced and lucid presentation by a deservedly confident orator | teacher ...I salute
no i rather him staying on youtube... better than a teacher!!!! he gives the best teaching that i cant even describe it, whenever something confuses me, go to khanacademy and look it up, it would be all clear... stay on youtube !!! :)
Very nice video. Helped a huge amount for revision for my AS History exam tomorrow.
This is how I learned it. When the two Koreas were separated, it was the start of the Cold War. The Soviets wanted to spread their influence anywhere they could. United States, and U.N. (mainly U.S.) could not stand to see Communism spreading. Plus Korean's peninsula was seen as a bridge that connects Japan to rest of Asia. Even other parts of history: Mongolians, several Chinese empires, Japan empire and ect invaded the Korean peninsula as sort of a gateway. It's really sad.
I find it hilarious that whenever America thinks "The troops'll be home by Christmas!", it literally never happens.
Kim Jong-il 's dad was Kim Il-sung, but Kim Jong-il died in 2011.
The current ruler is Kim Jong-un ( Kim Il-sung's grandson).
I now see the video was made shortly before Jong-Il he died.
+King George Dental and there's a correction pop up.
And now his son died too F in chat
There is no such thing as pleasant Imperialism Imperialism is based on the idea of coercion and subjugation.
Isn't Orientalism grand? The white Westerner chooses to not get it.
Excellent presentation -- showing this to my students during a class this afternoon. Thanks.
Did they like the presentation?
Thank you! This Helped Me On My History IA :)
Thank you. You guys are changing lives with khan ac
He already is a teacher, he teachs tousands of people all over the world! If he where in a classroom his awesomness and knowledge could only be seen by a few.
Very interesting, I always wanted to read about why the two Koreas are enemies but was too lazy to look around. Khan simply made this to convenient to ignore. :D
Love this pretty informative and will serve me well in my college History classes I plan to take once I'm done with High school which is about in 5 months! Thanks!
If the DBQ is about the korean war/vietnam war I will be Sal Khan's biggest admirer :D
Also Watch 71 Into the Fire. It's also a great korean war movie based on the battle of Pohang Girls Middle School, Where 71 student soldiers use it as a base and defend it.
Thank you so much sal Khan
Thank you for your lecture, I beleive its the best insight one can get on the subject in less then 20 minutes of time
Great lecture, Sal. Saw you on the Colbert Report, and this is my first chance to view your lectures. I'm a history buff. I was SO happy to hear you refer to NEW-CLEE-UR weapons, as opposed to the way so many have begun referring to them due to the influence over eight years of YOU KNOW WHO.
B ^)
This is excellent. I'm Korean so I approve this. ^^ Not many ppl know how brutal this war had been. Just kinda heard there was a war at one point in history in some small asian country. But in fact more ppl died during those three years than the whole Vietnam War. Let's face it. The cold war isn't over yet. F^%in' Sucks.
Много добър урок за Корейската война, госпожа Топракчиева ме праща.
Thank you!!
And I didn't realize how similar the Korean War was to the war in Vietnam...so many parallels..
very imformative, do u have any other videos like this on other countries?
i think you need to make a video of the Japanese occupation of Korea that you mentioned in the beginning of the video
worth watching to me being a upsc aspirant..thanq..
thank you, ill just use this to my school presentasion
It's been like 5 years but did you pass?
Hi, Sal. Can I request? Can you make a long video or combine multiple videos to one and arrange mutually exclusive timelines paralleled so we get to understand the whole world history in just one video? Because some of the incidents would be connected to each other and it is difficult already to align your history videos and mentally connect the dots. It would make things a lot easier for us or at least for me If I am not being too selfish, Thank you! And please keep uploading your videos......!
This will be a great help on the AP US test.
Exam in 3 hours :O Thank you Salman!
How did the exam go?
@@trueelias2462 I think I got an A -thanks for asking!
same.
extremely best history video ever!
may i thank you in releasing this video collection on you tube !! @ school i found history too complex or why does it affect who ? we are in today's world !! i now understand that it repeats if want to avoid aspects in man kind's world too which we live by law's rule's ect .ect simple understanding of the past can direct the future....war !! or defense !! you glide over many years !!! very well in this format !! Best Regards !!!
Hey Khan, I'm hoping that you can tackle the following subjects eventually;
Frontier/Wild West Era
Crusades
Spanish Inquisition
Israeli-Palestinian Conflict
Sino-Soviet Split
Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan
Bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki
Space Race
Fall of Communism
No one ever explained these things to me growing up and they're important, I wish these had been around.
"In 1945 you have the soviets coming form above, you have the soviets coming from above. That's the soviets (pause) coming from above" 1:23 LOL
Thanks helped alot
5:29 is when he finally starts talking about the korean war
Thank you for the video!
not as in depth, but good enough. thanks khan!
How is the Pusan perimeter the "Northeastern" corner, as stated? Looks like the Southeastern corner to me.
good catch
4 and 5 are pretty much the same when it comes to colleges awarding credit so good job!
I love KhanAcademy
Woot woot, more history.
Just a suggestion- but I would love if you did most of the major & minor history of the world since the Scientific Revolution. Then, pre-Galilean history could be delved into. But to understand where we are today, the crucial period of understanding is the one in which most people lack true historical perspective...from Copernicus to Einstein...
Keep it up Mr. Khan. Every video you put out is an achievement for education. An immortal several minutes of information.
this will help on AP WORLD
This should help on the AP Test!
I understand now the importance of an "opening" in any conclusion
thanks!
Could you pls put some history lesson on South Asia. I'm bangladeshi girl raised in middle east and would love to know more details of my own history.
10 years later..... they're still at war!
Love you from India.
very informitive.
wow this video is AMAZING
Nothing is free but the air you breathe, kid. Someday you'll learn that.
Thank you for ever!
Excellent video. I've also watched Bruce Cumings two parts on the Korean War. It's very good, too.
I have extra interest in that war since my father was at Koje-do POW camp. He said it was a horror. Americans and the other U.N. forces were not prepared for the massive number of POWs they had. (Koje suddenly had a 175,000 or so prisoners.) And, the communists and anti-communists were at each others' throats, literally--executions at night when the guards wouldn't go in the compounds. A horror.
Sal, just a small correction. Gen. MacArthur did not want to bomb across the Yalu, he wanted to bomb the bridges on the Yalu. Also in 51 the USSR was losing interest in this war which upset Mao for many years. For any of your viewers who are interested in the landing at Inchon I recommend they read the American Caesar. It will give a lot of insight into Gen. MacArthur - the good and the bad. Too bad history is mainly about wars and tyrants on all sides. :P
Thanx
Great .
Why didn't you have this video up during the Presidential race in 08?! Palin could have really used this video... :P
My grandfather was in the Chosin Reservoir battle. Horrendous stuff. He is still alive and has told us about his experiences.
My father was sent there around July 4th, through the Pusan perimeter out to the front line, (Taejon?). They retreated to around Namwon where a 2nd line was formed? Then later retreated again back to Naktong River. He was one of them that spear headed through( Punched through N, Korean Line) the U.S. pushed the N. Koreans until they retreated in which time, the group that spear headed had gotten captured by retreating N. Koreans and was a MIA, KIA, POW until around end of October. See 2nd part.
I'm gonna take the CRCT very soon so I'm watching as many videos as I can!!!!!
GOOD INFO...
You missed a big chunk of information at the beginning of this video... Secretary dean Acheson gave a speech about Americas defense perimeter which excluded Korea... This is part of the reason the Soviets green lit the the North's invasion plan...
So, you pay to go to classes where you watch videos you can watch for free?
Good history lesson, but learn the difference between "further" and "farther".
Legit, taking a us history test tomorrow
3:06 bro is kim jong un💀💀💀
The Korean war abridged:
1 Koreans freed from Japanese
2 North Korea (Communists, lead by Kim Il Sung) attacks Southern Korea
3 US+allies (European, South Korean) pushes up to China
4 US+allies pulled down from China
5 US+allies pushed to center Korea
6 War is called ceasefire, Korea is bitterly separated+their people massacred
7 Another crapload of people died because of patriotism, ideologies (Communist/Capitalist), and imperialism.
i like your video
what software/device are you using to make this video?
yes!!
denis kim because we call it Sea of Japan. The East China sea is below Korea but there is no 'east sea' in that region.
The phrase 'Sea of Japan' in incorrect we should call it 'The East Sea.'
Nah, that's boring, they should call it the sea of dragons.
Its not sea of japan...its east sea...
u are so stupid that ur only reply show you are uneducated
Right its sea japan down to the yellow sea to east china sea all linked directly to north pacific ocean / bering sea up top and below is linked to the indian ocean . Cheers buddy have a great day .
You all look the same because you are, Quit bickering and accept it.
You could say the same of Europeans
gonna be a bunch of east seas in the world
You know your fucked when you attempt to cover half of the APUSH textbook for the first time the day before the exam.
And when you still think you can do it at 11pm the night before by staying on youtube =P
China has been on the UNSC since the beginning. However, the initial Chinese seat was occupied by the Republic of China which kinda got defeated in 1949 and retreated to Taiwan where they still are to this day. Meanwhile, the People's Republic of China, although encompassing 97% of the Chinese population was not recognised by the UN as a legal nation until 1971. Thus, in 1950, it was the ROC that had the Chinese seat, not the current day PRC and the ROC is on the side US side.
I love you Sal
lolz @ibahz was just thinking the same thing....the DBQ better be about the Korean war now..
Nice, I gotta 4.
You misspelled Busan to Pusan
what do you use to write all these things
please make videos on Japan's occupation on Korea and the Philippines
Bruce Willis in the bottom right hand corner?
nice
@ArtCrashxp one of my favorite movies..i like it better then saving private ryan
Could you do a video about Taiwan and China?
14:00 lol stop fishing
What?
@@theparadigm8149 click the 14:00 minute mark, and though you will hear Sal say "Stop Fighting" his g looks like an s and so it reads "Stop Fishing".
@@mr.sherrill9137 Oh, LOL 😆
I wonder if you are the same guy who teaches calculus/physics on this channel.
Спасибо
Sal, when do you think North Korea's government will be overthrown and how important do you think this task is?
A lot of people are politely asking for the Sea of Japan to be changed to the East Sea and are getting yelled at. It's just what they're taught, people. That's what they learn and that's the way they see it. Maybe if it could be changed to say "Sea of Japan/East Sea", then we would all be happy.
The Soviet army disguised itself as a North Korean air force and limitedly deployed only north of Pyongyang, and did not provide air support even though Chinese troops were destroyed by the U.S. Air Force near the 38th parallel. The U.S. also sensed the presence of Soviet air force, but ignored it and moved on. However, the Soviet Union provided a large amount of weapons to North Korea and the Chinese Communist Party.
@ArtCrashxp and The Front Line is also a good korean war movie
@ArtCrashxp theyre soo many good movies like taegukgi and into the fire. i sooo agree
2nd Part - He was in what was knowin as the Nam Won Barefoot Death March and was marched up passed Seoul (Seen the burning of Seoul) into N. Korea up passed the Capital. They would get stoned, beat, gun butted, interogated etc. There food consisted of fish heads and rice patties. He also always said the Chinese soldiers were a lot nicer to them then N. Koreans were as they would give them actual food, cigarettes, coffee etc. He always said he wished there was more of that, but there wasn't.
Please change the Sea of Japan to East sea
It is just japanes thinking
Yubin Lee Japan-sea called in the world since 18c. It means japan had an effect on the society. So Khan just writes Japan-sea because it already used during long times.
